Non-binding school guidelines important step to help students with Type 1 diabetes, advocates say
Although a good first move, new Alberta guidelines for schools to support students with Type 1 diabetes should require more specific accommodations by school boards, parents say.
“This is a big step forward,” Scott McRae, regional director for Diabetes Canada, said on Tuesday.
However, the guidelines, announced Tuesday in St. Albert by Education Minister David Eggen, aren’t mandatory, and are missing a requirement for schools to help students who can’t inject themselves w -

UCP 'will not engage' in debate over abortion access if elected, says Kenney
Jason Kenney says the UCP won’t debate abortion access if elected to government after an anti-abortion advocacy group lauded his party as a chance at the “most pro-life legislature in decades.”
“Amongst the so-called social conservatives I know in the party, they’re not talking about that issue,” he said Tuesday. “They just want the government to leave them alone when it comes to certain constitutionally protected freedoms of conscience and religion.

'Let's grow up': Jason Kenney promises new liquor rules if UCP elected
UCP Leader Jason Kenney says he will expand provincial liquor laws and move away from what he described as “Prohibition-era restrictions” if his party forms government in the next election.

The Open for Business Act would repeal rules related to statutory holiday pay and return surpluses in the Workers’ Compensation Board accident f -

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -27.3 C with 7 km/h winds out of the southwest contributing to a -34 wind chill.

Tuesday's letters: Banning candidates undermines choice
Elections Alberta can be accused of political interference in our upcoming provincial election. To ban Stephen Mandel and five other Alberta Party members for allegedly filing financial statements late is a violation of Albertans’ Charter rights.
I am among perhaps most Albertans who intend to vote for the Alberta Party in the upcoming provincial election.
Jason Kenney has a precarious record in the human rights arena and by association his UCP presents itself as inherently unethical.

Opinion: The numbers show fixing the Oilers is simple
It is doom and gloom in Oiler Country. Fans are pessimistic. Energy and enthusiasm are low. It’s seemingly bleak … or is it?
The Oilers are within striking distance; the Stanley Cup playoffs are in reach. But two weeks before the trade deadline, how can we bolster the team, uplift fans, and breathe life into the season?
As an academic psychologist, I’m interested in big-picture questions like “What’s the best way to assess and evaluate people?” and “How -
Sex doll rental business says its open for door-to-door service in Edmonton
Posters for a sex doll rental business went up along Whyte Avenue late last week, marking the arrival of an intimate niche market in Edmonton.
But the advertising for Doll Next Door brings a host of questions about how this latest trend in sexual services will be regulated in Edmonton, if at all. Sex doll brothels and rental services have longer histories in places such as Japan and parts of Europe, but recent ventures in other Canadian cities have drawn mixed reactions.

Cold weather helps kill mountain pine beetle but won't stop epidemic, scientists say
Frigid as it feels, the white-knuckled cold snap gripping Alberta isn’t severe enough to put a halt to an infestation of mountain pine beetle threatening the province’s forests, scientists said.
Temperatures need to dip below about -30 C for four or five consecutive weeks to kill nearly all pine beetle larvae nestled inside tree trunks, said Nadir Erbilgin, a University of Alberta professor of forest entomology who studies the pine beetle.

There’s plenty of good news with the Bakersfield Condors, not surprising as the team is on a 12-game winning streak. The wins aren’t just fuelled by veteran players, but by a group of promising 20-22-year-old National Hockey League prospects for the Edmonton Oilers.
To check in on the farm team, I watched via AHL.com the team’s last two games. I mainly wanted to see Andrej Sekera’s return to action, as his health and ability to compete are crucial to the Oilers given -

City contemplates dumping parking minimums, seeks public input
The city is considering ditching parking regulations for homes and businesses, and wants Edmontonians’ feedback on the idea.
The current parking regulations that stipulate a minimum number of parking spaces that a home or business must have were put in place in the 1970s, and don’t “reflect current needs and preferences,” states a draft report on the topic.

Rules barring Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel from running are clear, says democratic renewal minister
The rules that barred Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel from running in an election until 2023 are fair and straightforward, says the minister for democratic renewal.
