Edmonton Oilers' scoring is trending up, but so is their opposition's
Game Day 55: Sharks at Oilers
My long-standing dream of a Canadian Division in the National Hockey League seems unlikely to ever come to fruition, but every so often it’s nice to pretend. Or not so nice, depending on which Canadian club one happens to root for.
Many years ago, the National Hockey League had a Canadian Division. It started in 1926 when the league expanded from seven to ten teams and remained in effect until the Montreal Maroons disbanded in 1938. Truth be told, though, it n -

Saturday's letters: Councillors should study ecology
Re. “Councillor should cover his own MBA costs,” Elise Stolte, Feb. 8
I have a suggestion for how councillors should use their discretionary ward budgets: take a mandatory, prolonged course in ecological literacy.
That way, they would be more inclined to assign adequate budgets towards protection of the ecological integrity of the river valley (instead of treating it as one big recreational centre or as a building site through lax top-of-bank rules) as well as towards appropriate man -
Opinion: Edmonton Humane Society best helps animals by preventing cruelty
When I volunteered to become chair of the Edmonton Humane Society’s board of directors last May, it was an easy decision.
As an animal lover, I was inspired by the important work the more than 110-year-old not-for-profit does every day, saving lives and giving animals a second chance they may not otherwise have.
The recent decision the society’s board made to end enforcement of the Animal Protection Act was not as easy. This decision led to a lot of sleepless nights, and I want to sh -

Number of Edmontonians using 24-7 access to Central LRT station doubles Thursday night as deep freeze continues
The city’s Central LRT station was a place of warmth for 45 people overnight Thursday — almost double the previous two nights as a deep freeze continues to shiver over Edmonton.
It was decided Tuesday during a city council meeting that the downtown station will remain open 24-7 for seven days to provide shelter from the brutal cold for those with nowhere else to go.
A total of 24 people stayed overnight both Tuesday and Wednesday, but jumped to 45 on Thursday, city spokesman Rowan An -
Alberta loses nearly 16,000 jobs in January, Edmonton region 'recovering'
Nearly 16,000 more Albertans were out of work in January, marking the second month in a row that the province has seen declining job numbers.
