Metro Line woes: Signalling issues cause unexpected LRT delays Friday
The Metro LRT line runs along flat lands, but it continues to face an uphill battle.
A problem, which the city identified as “signalling system issues,” resulted in an unplanned disruption during the Friday morning commute from 8:30 a.m. until about noon.
“ETS staff safely off-loaded Metro line passengers at stations, and bus replacement service operated between Churchill and NAIT,” said Rowan Anderson, an ETS spokesman in a news release Friday.

Province asks experts to chart path for banning conversion therapy
The province is convening a group of experts to examine ways to ban conversion therapy in Alberta, a move that follows murmurs of potential legislation on the issue.
The group will meet regularly for five months and report back to Alberta’s health minister with recommendations, said a Friday news release.
“Conversion therapy is a damaging, hateful practice that has no place in our province,” Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said in a statement. “Albertans deserve to trust th -

Oscar Klefbom and Matt Benning trending up on Edmonton Oilers defence
Edmonton Oilers Performance Rankings February 8 2019
How great is it to see Oscar Klefbom back on the Edmonton Oilers blueline? Pretty damn great.
In Edmonton’s 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild, Klefbom repeatedly did what Oilers d-men failed to do in his absence: he pounced on loose pucks in his own zone before opposing players could grab them and quickly passed them right on the sticks of his own players exiting the zone.
He actually successfully headmanned the pucked, leading to Oilers a -

Edmonton man charged with child exploitation after police receive tip from Texas
A 21-year-old Edmonton man has been charged with multiple counts of child exploitation after police received a tip from a father in Texas that his daughter was being coerced into sending sexually explicit photos.
In a news release Friday, police said the investigation stemmed from a tip received in May 2018, after a father in El Paso, Texas, contacted Cybertip, a reporting service operated by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
Police said the father found evidence of his 10-year-old daugh -

Oilers in 60: A win on the road, maybe stay on the road?
We got ourselves into a little pickle Oilers in 60 fans!

That aside the Oilers won 4-1 over the Minnesota Wild Thursday night and everyone was happy again.
The team faces the San Jose Sharks next, wonder if they can keep this going.
If they can just figure out a way to not play in Edmonton anymore, the Oilers will be fine.6-4-2 in last 12 road games.

Dining Out: Partake provides value worth savouring
One doesn’t have be an unreconstructed grouch to approach “About Us” mission statements with caution.
That said, Partake’s take on itself — i.e. “combining hearty, rustic French cuisine with a cozy and welcoming neighbourhood atmosphere” — pretty well hits the mark.
Situated just off the 124th Street ‘Promenade,’ it’s an appealing, small(!) room made for a winter city, falling design-wise somewhere between a brasserie and an -
A miracle, or just made up? Damien Atkins tackles the binary in We Are Not Alone
Damien Atkins is a good talker. The Edmonton-raised actor and playwright, now toiling in Toronto, is back home for his one-man show for Theatre Network, We Are Not Alone.
If looking at his resume wasn’t enough to validate his chops — Atkins’ play, Good Mother, made him the youngest playwright ever to have a new work staged at the Stratford Festival — a few minutes on the phone is enough to persuade a listener of the power of story, at least as told by Atkins.

Fitness column: Scrap overnight solutions for healthy long-term weight loss
Recently, Kevin O’Leary challenged a Shark Tank contestant to mass produce her healthy soup line. He suggested she would make more money if she outsourced production.
She had tried outsourcing, but quality dropped significantly. O’Leary set things straight when he replied, “that’s just how things work.”
Somewhere along the line, ‘units sold’ displaced quality and service. My first fridge (formerly owned by my parents) lasted more than 25 years. I ha -
Wine column: Choose sweet or sparkling to pair wine with Valentine's Day chocolate
It is a common misperception that wine and chocolate can be paired, but the duo rarely work together because chocolate is too sweet for a dry wine. The exception would be when pairing with a style of wine that is as sweet or sweeter than the chocolate. If you’re thinking of picking up some quality chocolates (we have amazing chocolatiers in Edmonton) for Valentine’s Day here are some tips for a perfect pairing.
Milk chocolate pairs well with white Port, Pineau des Charentes, fortifie -
Vintage style meets nerd at new Whimsical Cupcakes location
With five years under her belt in Garneau, Whimsical Cake Studio owner Darcy Scott has made a move to a bigger and better shop.
Now located just north of Whyte Ave. at 102 St., Whimsical Cake Studio is roughly double the size of the old Garneau location, and at least twice the fun. Modelled after the eclectic and ebullient style of its owner, Whimsical offers a host of cupcake and cake options to customers, and a plethora of hand-made candy and chocolates, too.

We built this galaxy together: A look at the best-ever Lego spaceships
The Lego Movie: The Second Part opens this Friday — Benny looks pumped.
Is it totally pathetic that it brings me to tears in the first Lego movie as Benny the spaceman bounces off the walls screaming “SPACE SHIP” when he finally gets to play?
Something about that scene really clicks into a deeper vein of nostalgia — not just for the Danish outer space-themed building toys, but the sense of possibility the whole human race used to feel as we pumped ridiculous resources int -
Friday's letters: Don't repeat median mistake on Jasper Ave.
I hope somebody on city council can remember the effects the previous raised median (the one with the balls) had on Jasper Avenue.
I am in favour of any improvements to Jasper Avenue, but I think a raised median of any height with trees west of 109 Street would be very detrimental to the overall project in that it would isolate the north and south sides of Jasper Avenue, which is exactly what happened with the previous median.
An unobstructed view of the opposite side of the road from -
Editorial: Act on inactive wells
Alberta’s NDP government has shown it’s willing to stand up for the environment and hold to account those whose actions do it harm.
It’s earned accolades from nature groups — and fierce defiance from local residents, opposition politicians and recreation groups — for seeking to preserve large swaths of wilderness as parkland. Early in its mandate, it gave officers the ability to issue tickets on the spot for offences on public lands such as littering, dump -

Yup, still a thing. Everyone’s favourite extreme cold warning was extended Friday as forecasters continue to call for wind chill values between -40 and -45.

Watch: As temperatures plummet a small team cares for those living rough
With the temperature hovering around -25 C, and Environment Canada forecasting a windchill of -40 C, a small group huddles under a parking lot just north of Edmonton’s downtown core.

The team searches Edmonton’s homeless encampments five days a week handing ou -
'I think it's time to get out': Urban campers face down freezing temperatures

That’s the reason 50-year-old George gives to explain why he chooses to live in a tent on a snowy hillside in Edmonton’s river valley.

David Staples: Cure for slippery winter sidewalks? Retractable spikes on boots
Had any bad falls on our slippery sidewalks this winter? I wiped out about two months ago, only to break the fall with my hand and cut up my knuckles. They’re still sore.
It’s been a brutal winter for falls and crash landings, which is why I’m excited about a new product that is becoming a staple at major Alberta worksites: Kickspike work boots with retractable spikes.

Player grades: Determined Edmonton Oilers grind down Wild
Oilers 4, Wild 1
For one game at least, Edmonton Oilers got the message. After a couple of days of team meetings off the ice and battle drills in practice, the Oilers took to the ice in Minnesota and worked their collective butts off for 60 solid minutes. The result wasn’t always pretty but it was very effective, as they skated, hit, and ground their way to a 4-1 win over the Wild. It was a solid team effort in which even coach Ken Hitchcock took one for the team when he got beaned w -
'We do not face an immediate catastrophe': Political strategist Brian Topp on Alberta's fiscal situation
There’s no evidence Alberta is dealing with a fiscal crisis, says political strategist Brian Topp.

“The province has the lowest taxes of any jurisdiction in Canada … and the highest GDP growth.”
