Report: Alberta woman among those fleeing last ISIS pocket in Syria
A woman from Alberta was among those fleeing the last Syrian village held by the so-called Islamic State group, according to a reporter on the ground.
On Thursday, New York Times reporter Rukmini Callimachi tweeted that a woman from Alberta was among the thousands of people coming out of Baghuz, Syria. The town — currently surrounded by the Syrian military, Iraqi forces and American-supported Kurdish and Arab fighters — is the last physical territory held by ISIS in Iraq and Syr -
Review: Justin Timberlake's song-and-dance spectacle heats up Rogers Place
Promising to warm things up on a frigid February evening, Justin Timberlake delivered a song-and-dance spectacle at Rogers Place Wednesday night, treating concertgoers to a pop-fueled procession of hits.
Making a two-night stint in the City of Champions on his Man of the Woods tour, it seemed fitting that the opening night was divided into two halves. The first half offered a carefully choreographed trip through material off Timberlake’s latest album — which inspired the tour’s -

Trying, and mostly failing, to make sense of Edmonton Oilers' bizarre goaltending situation
Game Day 54: Oilers at Wild
This isn’t just a competition for ice time, but for NHL future. Both [Cam Talbot and Mikko Koskinen] are on expiring contracts, and by far the likeliest outcome is that exactly one of them will be signed to an extension. Talbot convincingly won his previous such battle vs. Anders Nilsson in 2015-16, but this is a different season and a different competitor.
I wrote the above in a Game Day preview in mid-November when the 2018-19 NHL season was a third its p -
'I'm very sorry': Edmonton councillor says he'll reimburse city for executive MBA tuition
An Edmonton city councillor is reversing his decision to bill taxpayers for thousands of dollars in post-secondary tuition costs.
Ward 3 Coun. Jon Dziadyk initially posted a blog to his website on Jan. 11 announcing his enrolment in the University of Alberta’s Executive MBA program. At the time, he said he would personally pay one-third of the tuition for the program while using “some discretionary public dollars, from my ward account, to finance this degree.”

Edmonton is cold but it's par for the course, says Environment Canada
While Old Man Winter has Edmonton currently locked in an icy grip, he has also brought higher than normal temperatures for the city this season, according to Environment Canada.
Dan Kulak, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the average temperatures for November, December and January have all been above normal.
In November, the average temperature was -2.2 degrees while the 30-year average, calculated between 1981 and 2010, was -4.1 degrees, making the month about two degrees warmer th -

Edmonton weather: Extreme cold is here to stay. Or is it? Yes.
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -24.7 C with calm winds.
Extreme cold warning
The extreme cold warning was extended Thursday as forecasters don’t expect an end to this madness for at least another four or five days.

Thursday's letters: Photo radar all about the money
Re. “Better signage would cut speeding,” Letters, Feb. 5
I wholeheartedly agree with Kuldip S Riar, especially the “heavy on enforcement and not much on education and engineering” part.
Over the past 18 months I received two photo radar tickets, one for nine kilometres over and the other for 11. In both cases, the last speed sign I saw was for 60 km/h. Nowhere did I see any sign indicating a speed reduction to 50.

Opinion: Asking oil firms to help pay for climate change is good economics
In 1998, an internal Royal Dutch Shell memo predicted that as the impacts of climate change got worse, fossil-fuel companies might be sued in a class-action lawsuit “on the grounds of neglecting what scientists (including their own) have been saying for years …”
In January, the City of Victoria, in response to a letter from Shell implicitly denying the company’s responsibility for climate impacts from its products, started examining options for a class-action lawsuit aga -
Rapidly growing school program for kids with behavioural challenges needs new home
A Catholic school that helps students whose behaviour is too challenging to manage in conventional schools has grown substantially and is running out of space.
Less than a year-and-a-half since it reopened as an alternative school, St. Margaret School now has 90 students enrolled in four programs that surround students with educators and specialists who help manage their behavioural challenges.
“The program itself is a lifesaver for parents who have to put their kids in it,” parent N -
Edmonton fire crews adapt to conditions during extreme cold
The extreme cold weather wrapping its icy grip around Edmonton means fire crews have to change how they attend calls because the freezing weather can create more hazards than just flames.
Firefighters are just one group of many that have to be aware of the elements during winter and especially during a cold snap. District Chief Randy Shakura said Wednesday cold weather can create issues for fire crews, including equipment freezing over, crews getting wet and cold and hazards caused by ice. -
Antique collector's Indiana Jones dreams uncovered in a little house on the prairie
A dilapidated farmhouse on the cold Prairies with no heat, stacked more than one metre high with clutter, would scare most potential home buyers.
Antique hunter Alex Archbold, however, is not like most people.
The 40-year-old Edmontonian, who grew up on ’80s adventure flicks like the Indiana Jones franchise and The Goonies, knows antiquing gold lurks in unexpected places. A 100-year-old house in northeastern Alberta is his latest treasure chest.

Budget townhall: Public dials in to question finance minister
Education, housing and a provincial sales tax took centre stage at the first of two budget telephone town halls with Finance Minister Joe Ceci on Wednesday.
Ceci spent a large portion of Wednesday’s call-in session by answering questions about what the NDP government has done since coming to power in 2015. 'A life after oil': Edmonton's chief economist says shift to growing services sector essential for economic growth
With no clear sign of a prosperous recovery in the energy sector any time soon, Edmonton should shift its focus to “exporting brains” globally rather than resources, the city’s chief economist says.

Following the team’s 6-2 loss to Chicago on Tuesday, head coach Ken Hitchcock discussed the game and his decision to pull goalie Cam Talbot.
