Legislative reporter Clare Clancy sat down with Culture and Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda to talk about his experience as Alberta’s first openly gay cabinet minister, and issues he’s dealt with in the past year such as Calgary’s Olympic bid.
They also chatted about the upcoming election after two NDP MLAs in Calgary said they wouldn’t be running.

Watch: NAIT campus will double in size
The NAIT campus will double in size after purchasing about 21.5 hectares of land from the City of Edmonton.
About 13 hectares of land along Princess Elizabeth Ave. near 109 Street, was parcelled with a former city transit garage.
The new land will allow NAIT to construct a student residence, a first on the north Edmonton campus. Plans for the future also include consolidation of all programs at the main campus, except Cranes and Hoisting, which will remain in Spruce Grove. -

Discovery boosts chemo while protecting heart: University of Alberta researchers
Chemotherapy may become more effective and less harmful to heart cells thanks to research at the University of Alberta.
Researchers have long known that the aggressive attack on cancer cells from chemotherapy often causes damage to other cells in the body, including the heart, making patients more prone to develop heart problems years down the road.
“This is the first targeted therapy at the preclinical level to actually prevent the side-effects of chemotherapy on the heart and simultaneou -

The prospect of the current Edmonton Oilers leadership hiring the right GM fills me with gloom
Who will pick the next Edmonton Oilers GM? That should be the question on the mind of every season ticket holder, every fan and Oilers owner Daryl Katz.
The current organization was built by Bob Nicholson, who took over the team in April 2015, almost four years ago. Nicholson is fully accountable for all that has happened since that time in hockey operations, having either hired, approved the hiring or retained all staff in hockey ops.

Oilers in 60: Another loss, another jersey tossed
It happened again.
It’s Groundhog day all over again.
Except this was much, much worse.
The Oilers, having spent the first two periods of their game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Roger Place Tuesday night on top and seemingly on their way to cruise to a win, went ahead and imploded in the third period to the tune of five unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 loss.
For whatever reason, the Oilers cannot close out a game. We saw it over the weekend against the Flyers and Canadiens, when the -

Edmonton Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock post game interview after being defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 at Rogers Place.
The Oilers have lost six in a row, and the Hawks, who were supposedly dead and buried in the playoff scramble six weeks ago, are now tied (51 points) with the Oilers, and St. Louis, another team out of it at the start of 2019, has 53.

Edmonton weather: Extreme cold continues; this is life now
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -27.5 C with 2 km/h winds out of the south, southeast contributing to a -30 wind chill.

Wednesday's letters: Grieving a life lost in the cold
Re. “Frozen body found near Commonwealth Stadium,” Feb. 4
“A solitary police officer in a cruiser kept watch over the body as people came and went from the nearby recreation centre.”
I was one of those people, hurrying to yoga around 11:15 am, bundled up against the cold, unaware that a person had died in the bitter cold near my home, until the Journal article Monday. Thank you, Edmonton Journal for bringing this story to light.

Opinion: One inclusive education system would turn no one away
I would like to reply to the recent article entitled Catholic schools add diversity and choice, Jan. 3, written by Ms. Serena Shaw, president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association.
Ms. Shaw states, in essence, that the recently launched Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA) Together for Students campaign is a “thinly veiled contempt for religious rights and Catholicism” under the guise of seeking economic efficiencies. In this she is misinfor -
Opinion: Alberta students can't afford Doug Ford-style policies
Albertans pride themselves on their ability to ignore Ontario.
We’ve endured far too many hot takes from the east. We get it, Ontario, you like the Maple Leafs. You blame us for winter weather when it’s not actually cold. Your love of cottage country is predicated on faulty nomenclature. They’re called cabins, Ontario. Cabins.
But every once in a while, Albertans should pay attention to good old Upper Canada. Recent changes to post-secondary education are a case in point.

Watch: Imagining a new Jasper Avenue
Oliver resident and urban planning graduate Dustin Martin believes that overall, the upcoming changes to Jasper Avenue will be a big improvement for the neighbourhood. The City of Edmonton’s Imagine Jasper Avenue project, which Martin worked on, will lead to changes from 109 Street through 114 Street as the first phase of construction begins this year.
He argues that placing the emphasis on pedestrian safety and street level enhancements will lead to a safer, more appealing Jasper Avenue. -
New mixed-use residential tower looking to make a 'Wedge' on Jasper Avenue
A proposed 11-storey mixed-use development hopes to pop on a busy Jasper Avenue — sandwiched between two historic buildings with only a narrow seven and a half metres of width to work with.
Named The Wedge in response to how it will sit on the busy downtown street, the skinny tower will stand about 38 metres tall and offer up to four units of retail space on the main floor and basement, with 34 residential units above.
Design company Holo-Blok was brought on by the current property owner O -
Elise Stolte: Jasper Avenue upgrade is worth a little pain for commuters
Whose needs count the most: the person driving through a neighbourhood or someone living there?
That’s the issue at the core of the controversial west Jasper Avenue upgrades, expected to increase commute times by up to two minutes for west-end residents during rush hour.
Those delays caused widespread frustration when the design was street-tested with yellow plastic bollards and picnic tables during summer 2016. But did you know the number of people driving on Jasper Avenue and living in t -
David Staples: Top end old folks homes are now like luxury hotels and resorts
The eldest of the wealthy baby boom generation are turning 73 this year, but for them there will be no dreary, uncomfortable old folks homes of the popular imagination.
For several decades now, homebuilders have been erecting a new generation of seniors residences and communities that are more like luxury hotels or resorts than depressing institutional quarters. In Edmonton, home builder Greg Christenson has led this charge.

Player grades: Edmonton Oilers exposed on home ice yet again, crash 6-2 to Blackhawks
Blackhawks 6, Oilers 2
No way to put lipstick on this pig. Edmonton Oilers let down themselves, each other, and most importantly their long-suffering home fans with another brutal performance in the “friendly confines” of Rogers Place on Tuesday night, crashing and burning 6-2 to Chicago Blackhawks.
For the third game in a row since their ten-day break, the Oilers came out like they were shot out of a coma, taking a penalty in the second minute of play, failing to kill it, and findin -
Parents tell Edmonton public board to keep Confucius Institute agreement alive
Political disagreements shouldn’t jeopardize a valuable relationship the Edmonton public school board has with the Confucius Institute, some parents told school board trustees Tuesday.

Residents don't like TransEd proposal to close 95 Avenue and speed LRT construction
A proposal to close a large chunk of 95 Avenue for the remainder of the year to speed up LRT construction doesn’t sit well with one of the businesses along the stretch.
Valley Line LRT developer TransEd is considering a temporary, full closure of 95 Avenue between Connors Road and 85 Street. During the closure, there will still be pedestrian access, and there will be some north-south crossings for cars and people.
