For a moment it looked like Edmonton might actually escape the clutches of the dreaded polar vortex.
However, it seems Mother Nature has different plans.
Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning Saturday as temperatures in Edmonton plunged towards the -30 C mark with windchill values ranging from -34 C in the daytime to -41 C overnight.
According to Weather Network meteorologist, Nadine Powell, the blast of arctic air has essentially flipped from hammering much of eastern Canada last we

Cult of Hockey Player Grades: The Edmonton Oilers get a point in Philly, but a butter-soft PK ultimately costs them a chance at 2.
The Edmonton Oilers flat-out dominated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-on-5 Saturday. The Flyers didn’t score even once at even strength.
But the Oilers absolutely soiled the sheets on the PK. Philadephia scored 4 times (count ’em, 4!) on the power play. And it was that failure to stop the Flyers’ man advantage Saturday that cost the Oilers a precious point in the Western Division Wild Card race.
Philadephia rallied from a 4-2 deficit with 16 minutes to go in the 3rd to tie it at 4. -

Motown lives on in Canadian tribute to the 1960s era
When it comes to musical time-tripping you’ve got to have the right tunes.
For those of a certain age — boomers for instance — there may be no better sound than Motown. If you’re part of that demographic you know that the hit label from Detroit is where ’60s pop culture really discovered just how great black pop music could be.
Remember, Motown enjoyed 110 top ten hits between 1961 and 1971, even beating The Beatles.
So if you’re taking in a ‘legends&rsq -

Saturday's letters: Who allowed Sidhu on the road?
While Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is guilty of driving without due care, where is his employer in all of this? Who told this inexperienced and untrained young driver to haul that truck and load?
He should also be hauled into court and reprimanded in some fashion. He should also lose his business licence. How many other untrained drivers does he have on the road?

Woodchuck, marmot, ground squirrel — whose shadow can shrink an Alberta winter?
Groundhog Day is supposed to let Canadians know (theoretically) how much longer winter will be, but really, have many Albertans ever even seen a groundhog?
Groundhogs are sparse, if present at all, according to resident rodent experts. But the day, Feb. 2, marked on calendars across the land in honour of the creature and its shadow is as good an excuse as any to learn more about its Alberta brethren — big and small — who often get confused for their spotlight-stealing cousin.

Game Day 51: Oilers at Flyers
“Watch out for that first step. It’s a doozy!”— Ned Ryerson, Groundhog Day

The Edmonton Oilers take the first step of their resumed season in a rather daunting environment — Pennsylvania on Groundhog Day. Philadelphia may be a four-hour drive from Punxsutawney, but is it far enough for the Oilers to avoid their own shadow and repetition of the mistakes of seasons past?
