Ex-Mountie found guilty of harassing women hospitalized prior to sentencing
A former Mountie convicted of fraud, theft and harassing and stalking women fell ill the day before he was to be sentenced and was “quarantined” in hospital, his lawyer said Friday.

Player grades, Games 41-50: Two steps forward, three back a familiar theme for Edmonton Oilers
Ten days have passed since the Edmonton Oilers played Game #50, coincident with the team itself taking two of its in-season vacations consecutively, first for the All-Star Game, then the team’s mid-season break that was piggybacked right on top of it for the second time in three years. Normally I do the 10-game segment reviews within a day or so of its final contest (by necessity), but with a long schedule break already beckoning, big news broke that night. Review: Arkells bring rocking rulebook, Starlite Room roots to Rogers Place stage
There are three rules for an Arkells show.
Frontman Max Kerman stated them shortly after taking the Rogers Place stage, but they should have been posted along Ford Hall’s walls, stamped on ticket stubs or broadcast on big screens prior to the performance, if only to prevent Kerman from saying early on — before digging into the band’s official rulebook — “get the f— out of your seats Edmonton.”
Seats? The word itself signals how far the Arkells have come. -

Landowners dealing with orphan wells can't prematurely celebrate court ruling, says consultant
It’s too early for landowners dealing with orphan wells to celebrate a Supreme Court of Canada decision telling bankrupt energy companies they can’t walk away from cleanup, says an Alberta farm consultant.
“We think this is a good decision,” said agrologist Graham Gilchrist, a member of the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors. “It’s probably too early to say because companies are going through their rights and obligations.

Opinion: Notley's path to balance budget is far from 'clear'
Premier Rachel Notley made several noteworthy comments during her recent campaign-style speech to the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, from ruling out a sales tax to rehashing spending scandals of past governments.
But what really stood out was her claim that her government is on a “clear path” to budget balance by 2023. If that path exists, we haven’t seen it.
Clearly, the premier inherited a challenging fiscal situation. With a sharp decline in oil prices and decade of program-s -
Opinion: Confucius Institute helps us understand China
In the past few days, likely as a spin-off of the current issues around Huawei, one again sees claims being presented about the role and operation of Confucius Institutes, in particular the Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE).

Friday's letters: Rejected without good cause
I am among an extensive list of experienced and world-class tech and trade workers that are seeking employment in our tarnished economy.

David Staples: Will new $2-billion refinery be public investment fiasco or fortune?
The Alberta NDP promises to put up one billion in public dollars to back new oil refining in Alberta, even as there’s more bad news when it comes to government investment in business.

Paid Century Park park and ride stalls transfer to developer March 1
The latest round of stalls handed over to the land developer at the Century Park park and ride is all part of a long-term densification plan, says the councillor for the area.
On March 1, about 450 city-operated paid parking stalls will be turned over to the company developing the area around the LRT station. The change is a result of a recently approved development permit.
