The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Brad Malone, 29, the veteran AHL grinder. My takeRemember, it’s Brad Malone, Brad. Not Ryan, or Joe, or Greg, or Mark, or Sean. It’s Brad.
Malone has received strong reviews from Bakersfield coach Jay Woodcroft for his work on a shut-down line with Patrick Russell and Joe Gambardella. This group was used much of the year against the toughest competition of opposing AHL teams.
Malone is a centre, and one that fans of the Oilers have seen in seven 2017-

Big names, bold acts fill out Edmonton's 2019 concert schedule
Cher, Snoop Dogg, Iron Maiden and Elton John are among the many concert highlights taking place in Edmonton in 2019.
Canadian country legend Paul Brandt will be at Rogers Place on Feb. 2, followed by Justin Timberlake, who makes up for a couple of cancelled fall dates with two appearances at Rogers Place, Feb. 6 and 7. The very next day, Feb. 8, has Dan Mangan at the Winspear, while Mother Mother bring their newest album, Dance and Cry, to the Jubilee Auditorium on Feb. 15.

Fitness column: Push healthy resolutions past January by avoiding speed bumps
Like a waistband strained beyond its intended girth, gym parking lots are swollen with the consequences of holiday merrymaking. Exceeding its ‘best before date’, debauchery has morphed into healthier pursuits — at least for the time being. It won’t be long before resolution expiry dates have similarly passed.
I’m not much of a drill sergeant when it comes to training clients. I’m more of a guided discovery kind of guy. Having said that, occasionally you need t -
Alberta bound: Paul Brandt carved his own path to country music stardom
When a young Paul Brandt announced to his then-new Nashville agent that he was in the music game for life, she just rolled her eyes.
“She had heard that from so many other people,” the country singer laughs over the phone from his home just outside of Calgary. “I mean, she’s had the opportunity to work with some amazing artists, like Garth Brooks and Tricia Yearwood. We recently had a heart to heart where she reminded me that it’s very unusual for a musician to make -
Cultural confusion spawns a celebration of roots for Cree songwriter
Thousands of singer-songwriters ache to make music as a process of self-discovery. Kristen McArthur zeroed in on that early on.
“I’ve always had that creative side in me that hones in on trying to share what I feel or what I perceive is going on in the world.”
But in McArthur’s case things are a little more complicated than most. She’s a full-status member of the Bigstone Cree Nation who didn’t actually grow up on a reservation. Consequently, her references to -
Songs My Mother Never Sung Me: A poignant look at the deaf and hearing worlds
Dave Clarke struggles with a label for his creation, debuting at the upcoming Chinook Series.
It’s not really an opera, says the Edmonton musician and sound designer, but neither is it a musical. Yes, there is music and singing — but there is also sign language.
In Songs My Mother Never Sung Me, Clarke tackles a deeply personal tale — what it was like to grow up a CODA (child of deaf adult). Both of his parents were born to women who had been exposed to rubella during pregnancy -
Edmonton's new police chief isn't afraid to shake up status quo, say former colleagues
When Dale McFee is formally sworn in as Edmonton’s new police chief Friday, the city will start getting to know a man who comes with a reputation for “respectfully disrupting the status quo.”
McFee, named to the post in November, takes over from former top cop Rod Knecht to become the city’s 23rd chief. Postmedia spoke with some of his former colleagues to learn more about the person taking on one of the toughest jobs in the city and to get a hint as to how he will l -
Watch: New Edmonton police chief will be sworn in Friday
Dale McFee will become the 23rd police chief for the Edmonton Police Service after a swearing in ceremony on Friday at city hall.
McFee’s most recent posting was as deputy minister for policing and corrections for the Government of Saskatchewan, where he has been actively shifting the way policing is approached since 2012.
He is replacing Rod Knecht as the city’s top cop and comes after a review of about a dozen applicants. -

Another Andrej Sekera midseason return? You sure about that?
This in from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: “Andrej Sekera is getting close to a conditioning stint. Edmonton is going to have to clear some cap room.”
My takeOh oh.
In his day, which wasn’t too long ago, Sekera was easily the best d-man on the Oilers, a key cog in a 2016-17 Edmonton team not only made the playoffs, but won a playoff series. It’s fair to say that if Sekera had not been hurt in the 2017 playoffs, the story of the 2017-19 Oilers might be much different. He -

Watch: Capilano residents argue for St. Gabriel school to remain open, fighting second closure plan
Parents and Capilano residents spoke out in support of St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School at a public meeting on Jan 30, 2019, as they fight a second closure plan by the Edmonton Catholic School Board. The board organized an open house to engage both groups at the school Wednesday night.
The school first opened in 1957, as hosts an International Baccalaureate program. Parents argued that losing the school would mean their children would have to be bused instead of walking to school. The impa -
Spruce Grove youth charged after police seize 30 firearms and 2,000 rounds of ammo
A 17-year-old boy has been charged and multiple guns seized by Edmonton police after a break-and-enter earlier this week.
Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a call for a break-in at a business near 115 Avenue and 149 Street, police said in a news release Wednesday.
Police said a male suspect had entered a firearms business and was in the process of removing guns, ammunition and military surplus items.
The youth was seen by police fleeing the area with a firearm, leaving the rest of the -

Thursday's letters: Eat Alberta beans to help save planet
Re. “If you care about the planet, eat more beef,” Opinion, Jan. 25
Danielle Smith cites research from UC Davis’s John Muir Institute. She doesn’t mention the institute’s research on the relationship between climate and diet. Benjamin Houlton and Maya Almaraz have demonstrated that while a single serving of beef produces 330 grams of carbon dioxide, a serving of lentils emits only two grams — a huge difference.

Oil Spills: New Edmonton Oilers GM 'needs authority' to clean house

Editorial: End schools deal with China
If there is a takeaway from the nasty dispute with China which Canada finds itself embroiled, it’s that a police state plays by vastly different rules.
It’s a lesson that should inform Edmonton Public Schools in its dealings with the Confucius Institute, a Chinese-government supported culture and language program.
To bully Canada into releasing Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, China has shown its true face by holding two Canadians hostage in inhumane conditions, arbitrarily sentencing -
UCP criticizes NDP branding, political scientist says focus on Notley 'makes perfect sense'
The United Conservative Party is criticizing the Alberta NDP for hiding its party name in branding, but highlighting the leadership of Premier Rachel Notley is a smart move, says a political scientist.
“We’re proudly running a strong, experienced United Conservative team that’s ready to govern. In contrast, the Notley NDP is now trying to erase all mentions of ‘NDP’ in their public products,” the UCP said on social media on Tuesday.

Keith Gerein: Extreme ideas may be Alberta's only answer in an energy fight lacking common sense
It’s no secret Albertans are feeling a bit indignant at many of their fellow Canadians these days.
The list of grievances has grown so long over the past year that it’s been hard to keep track.
Pipeline delays. Overly rigorous changes to the approval process. Obstructionist governments in B.C. and Quebec. Apathy from Ottawa to buy rail cars. A tanker ban that seems to ban only Alberta petroleum products. Equalization.
The frustration many Albertans feel from such issues comes in a co -

Capilano residents argue for St. Gabriel school to remain open, fighting second closure plan
St. Gabriel School should stay open to preserve Catholic education in southeast Edmonton and prepare for growth in mature neighbourhoods, Capilano residents and parents told school trustees at a Wednesday night meeting.
Twenty people, all in favour of keeping the elementary school open, asked trustees to look beyond operational costs and enrolment numbers to consider the social and spiritual cost of shuttering the Capilano school.

Edmonton police responded to at least 155 crashes on snow-covered roads Wednesday.
During the morning commuting hours police responded to 71 traffic collisions. Seven of the collisions recorded between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. resulted in injuries, police spokesman Scott Pattison said in an email Wednesday. This is a good sign for the city’s Vision Zero initiative, traffic safety office executive director Gerry Shimko said, even if it means a decrease in revenue that goes back into traffic safety programs.

Artists plead with council to make Orange Hub more affordable
A city-owned arts space isn’t affordable for artists, city council’s community and public services committee heard Wednesday.
The Orange Hub — formerly a MacEwan University campus — presently has 19 tenants, with 69 per cent presently leased. The city was in talks with five other potential tenants last December, according to a report that went before committee.
Current and aspiring tenants attended the Wednesday meeting to tell committee that while some organizations are -
Councillors grapple with humane society's pull-out on enforcement services
City peace officers will temporarily take over local enforcement of the province’s Animal Protection Act, starting Friday.
City council’s community and public services committee passed a motion to allow staff to take on enforcement work that the Edmonton Humane Society will cease doing Thursday. With the interim solution in place, city administration will prepare a report on permanent solutions to be returned before council in March.
