Alberta will increase oil production after an initial period of curtailment drew down storage levels by five million barrels, says the province.
Production will rise to 3.63 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March, said a Wednesday news release. That’s a bump of 75,000 bpd compared to the 3.56 million bpd limit set out in January.
“We’re not out of the woods yet, but this temporary measure is working,” said Premier Rachel Notley in a statement. “We

With Peter Chiarelli out and Keith Gretzky in, for the interim, as general manager, the Edmonton Oilers have an existential question to ask of themselves: Are they really all in on making the 2019 NHL playoffs? That would surely mean trading away future prospects in the form of young players or draft picks.
Or are they willing to ride through the storm, no matter the cost?

Oilers in 60: Is it Saturday yet? Where's Connor McDavid?
It’s been more than a week since the Oilers last played a hockey game and fans are either enjoying the time away or are going completely insane waiting.
All work and no hockey makes Oilers fans, something something…
What to do? What to do?

Edmonton weather: Wind plus snow equals windy snow
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -9.1 C with 7 km/h winds out of the southeast contributing to a -13 wind chill.
Temperature-wise it’s actually going to be pretty nice today with a high of 0 C. Too bad the wind is going to ruin it all, it seems. Forecasters are calling for wind gusts of 40 km/h this afternoon which will make things feel a bit more chilly than it actually -

Wednesday's letters: Food Guide's milk snub disappoints
Re. “Food Guide right to drop dairy,” Letters, Jan. 24
Regarding Canada’s new Food Guide, I agree that plant-based proteins need to play a larger role in the diet of Canadians but am disappointed that dairy products have been severely downgraded.
There are nine essential nutrients in milk. It is a top source of calcium, providing 30 per cent of our daily requirement in one eight-ounce glass. It is also a good source of protein and Vitamin C. An eight-ounce glass also provides 3 -
Opinion: Will you use your voice to empower society or misinform it?
I have experienced the joy of writing for many years through public service and in many voluntary capacities. This includes writing legislation, bylaws, speeches and newsletters to name a few.

Editorial: Drive home Alberta's crisis
Now is the time for Alberta’s MPs in Ottawa to speak up for the interests of those who elected them and press for a long-term solution to Canada’s oil crisis.
MPs returned to Parliament Hill on Monday for a winter session whose importance is amplified inasmuch as it’s the last sitting of the House of Commons before a federal election.
Nowhere to be heard or seen in the pre-election posturing on Parliament Hill so far has been any mention about the oil crisis that hamstrung Albe -

David Staples: Cal Nichols hopes red tape will rebound in fitting fashion on B.C. NDP
There could be a delicious kind of justice handed out Wednesday in British Columbia to the red tape-loving provincial New Democrats — and few people will be happier than Edmonton father and son developers Cal Nichols and Ken Nichols.
The Nichols are keen to see the results of the Nanaimo provincial byelection. A Liberal victory would give the party 43 seats, tying it with the 43 seats held by the governing coalition of NDP and Greens.

Edmonton school districts may collaborate on busing, strained budgets prompt talks
Edmonton’s public and Catholic schools may collaborate on shuttle buses to pick up high school students should Edmonton Transit pare back some of its neighbourhood services.

But the tentative plan has school district administrators concerned it could leave some students who take transit to school too far from bus routes, said Debbie Hunter, director of stud -

Why Sam Gagner makes sense as a short-term fix for the Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers desperately need more secondary scoring as well as an actual right-handed, 3rd Line Center. But they’re on a budget.
Sam Gagner would give the club both. He’s available, he’s looking, and I believe that the Oilers organization has genuine interest in the player. But it takes 2 to tango.
For those who correctly point out that Gagner is down in the AHL today because he is not among Vancouver’s best 12 forwards, I do not disagree. But the Canucks also hav -
