An in-school garden club has brought together junior high students to learn about growing and preparing food in Edmonton. Students at Ottewell Junior High School, under the guidance of math and foods teacher Ruth Rancier, come together to care for the garden, which provides food for their cooking classes.
Students learn to choose seeds, plant them and care for edible plants and flowers. They then prepare meals with homegrown ingredients. Using worms to make compost, the students care for their f

AGLC's licensing freeze thaws to allow 10 new retail cannabis shops
The Alberta government will issue 10 new retail cannabis licences thanks to increasing supply after a months-long licensing freeze.
The province stopped issuing shop licences in November, citing the national supply shortage that has plagued the industry.
At the time, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) said there were more than 700 applications from about 430 applicants in the queue for an Alberta store licence. Each applicant can apply to run up to 37 stores.

"So many horror stories": RenovationFind aims to protect homeowners from being ripped off
When it comes to renovations, you can apparently live the life of Riley.
Years ago that wasn’t necessarily the case, as local entrepreneur Keith Riley, a partner in Edmonton-based K&J’s Custom Granite, kept hearing about how homeowners were being taking advantage of. In some cases, homeowners’ dreams of carefree living and hassle-free home renovations were turning into nightmares.
“I met a lot of homeowners through K&J’s that were being taken advantage of by -
Growing Things: Lawn fertilizer can hamper apple tree production
Q: We would appreciate your advice regarding an apple tree. We have one apple tree that is a several years old, which we have fertilized with all-purpose fertilizer, and it has never borne fruit. We have some haskap berry bushes nearby which we also fertilize with all-purpose fertilizer, and they bear lots of berries, so we -
Canmore's Versant development brings home mountain views
Even though Angela Grekul of Edmonton travels to Canmore at least once a month to work, she insists that life in the small mountain town is about slowing down and enjoying life.
Her nine-to-five job is in wealth management, however three years ago a colleague and fellow art lover invited her to become co-owner of Avens Gallery in Canmore, thereby beginning the slow transition from a hectic life in the provincial capital to a more serene existence in the mountains, despite the fact she’s th -
Review: Dierks Bentley balances party and polish at Rogers Place
Partying on a Thursday night has always been something of a fool’s errand, so when Dierks Bentley raised a glass to Rogers Place and remarked “it’s close enough, let’s call it the weekend” the message was delivered with a tongue-in-cheek charm that’s come to characterize the 43-year-old country superstar.
Of course there was plenty of reason to party on this particular Thursday, thanks to a crowd-pleasing lineup that included openers Tenille Townes (more on he -

Dining Out: Tasty and tasteful, Aarde finds its place along 104th Street
Even in Edmonton, increasingly known for being a foodie city as new spots open their doors every few weeks, there will always be room for restaurants that take care in their dishes and care of their customers.
Take Aarde (which means earth in dutch), on 104th Street downtown, carving out a niche of its own in an area already crowded with relative newcomers like Bundok, Bottega, and DOSC.
Despite having opened its doors in November, Aarde has already established itself by providing careful s -
Wine column: Corsica wines reflect history of conflict and conquest
While planning for an upcoming trip to France I was reminded of two often overlooked island destinations on my bucket list. One, just a short ferry ride off the southeast coast of Newfoundland — a place called Saint Pierre and Miquelon — is the last remaining French territory, dating back to when New France occupied much of the North American east coast. It is a place where the Euro and the rich French culture persevere, and I remember reading somewhere about a small wine shop locate -
"We want to take this as far as we can": Local rockers Altameda return home supporting second album
Second time was the charm for Edmonton rockers Altameda.
After picking up glowing reviews for their debut album, 2016’s Dirty Rain, the four-piece sequestered themselves in a cabin to record a follow up with local producer Jeff Kynoch. Tracking completed, they sat down and decided that maybe they needed to step it up a notch.
“It could have been a lo-fi project, which would have also been cool, but we decided that we needed a more polished direction,” explains singer Troy Snate -

Friday's letters: Target consumers, not oil firms
Re. “All of us must pay true costs of consuming oil,” Opinion, Jan. 24
Craig Cameron wants oil companies to go away by way of economic suicide. It’s at best simplistic if he thinks that the climate problem will be solved if Canadian producers of oil disappeared.
He forgets about consumers; they are actually the ones who put carbon into the air. His strategy would have Canadian consumers emit carbon from Saudi, or U.S., Russian or Venezuelan oil. Just as is the case in Eastern C -
Editorial: Oilers need culture change
This isn’t the way things were supposed to turn out. In 2015, the city’s diehard but perennially disappointed sports fans were bursting with pride and marvelling at the promise of better times ahead.
The Edmonton Oilers, having churned out yet another season of mediocrity, reaped the ultimate prize by winning the draft lottery and the right to draft Connor McDavid, who would waste little time staking his claim as the best player in the world, easily eclipsing even the team&rsquo -

A Grande Prairie family is frustrated and angry after a teacher who admitted to hitting their 10-year-old disabled child received a $200 fine and letter of severe reprimand from an Alberta Teachers’ Association conduct committee.
“To me, it’s another slap in the face,” the boy’s mother, Lisa Lovean, said of the committee’s penalty, which was announced Wednesday after a hearing in Edmonton.

Elise Stolte: Audit into city payment system illustrates need for workplace respect
The City of Edmonton got more bad news about workplace harassment Thursday, along with a good example of how it can affect the bottom line.
Last July, accounts payable office co-ordinator Darlene Woodham came to council to say she and seven of her co-workers were driven to tears by a manager who wouldn’t believe their concerns. They were trying to raise the alert about issues they saw in the new city invoice payment system.
Instead, they got blamed for not doing their job pr -
David Staples: 'Any other market besides Edmonton would have abandoned the Oilers a long time ago': Sports business expert
The ineptitude of the Edmonton Oilers has made the organization the laughingstock of the National Hockey League.
With the Decade of Darkness now on a nasty two-year comeback, could things get so bad that it will impact the financial health of the arena district and owner Daryl Katz’s business fortunes?
In that regard, it’s lucky for Katz that Edmonton is so hockey mad.
“Any other market besides Edmonton would have abandoned the Oilers a long time ago,” says University of -
"He didn't become terminally stupid overnight": Brian Burke defends Peter Chiarelli
Burke also says of new GM: “They need a guy with experience, brains and balls.”
This in from provocative Sportsnet commentator Brian Burke, his assessment and partial defence of his good friend, former Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli, spoken just after Chiarelli was canned.
