Long-time readers of the Cult of Hockey — thank you, by the way — will know you can set your calendars by Bruce’s roster reviews: pre- and post-training camp; pre- and post-trade deadline; pre-and-post-Canada Day. The seasons of hockey, as regular as those of nature.
Occasionally, however, a catastrophic event inserts itself in that cycle. Such as a GM firing, something the Edmonton Oilers have done three times now in less than six years, including this week when Pete

City driving instructor wrongfully issued driving certifications to civilians, alleges auditor
An Edmonton Transit driving instructor wrongfully issued nearly 100 driving certifications to civilians trying to avoid licence suspensions or increases to their insurance premiums, alleges a city auditor report released Thursday.
The professional driver improvement course is one of two driving courses that all new Edmonton Transit operators must take. The certification allows a maximum of a three demerit reduction to a candidate’s driving record.

Corporate culture shift?: City employee engagement survey to be released
Results of a city employment engagement survey released Thursday will show whether or not there’s been a corporate culture shift in the wake of a 2016 survey that found nearly one in five city employees reported being harassed at work.
The city said it plans to publish the results of its 2018 staff engagement survey Thursday afternoon.
Back in 2016, about 20 per cent employees reported being harassed at work. In some pockets of the administration, that was nearly one in three. Sexual haras -

What to do with the messes Peter Chiarelli made? Ride them out
Peter Chiarelli signed or traded for a number of players who are underperforming in terms of their contracts but are still contracted for at least next season. This list includes Milan Lucic, Brandon Manning, Ryan Spooner and Kyle Brodziak.
What should the new Edmonton Oilers GM do with their contracts, especially as the Oilers are going to be pressed up against the cap in 2019-20, just as they are this year?
In the recent years, the Oilers have used buy-outs to deal with under-performing player -

Gluten-free glory at NAIT during Saturday's wine dinner
Lots of people today are celiacs, and others have a gluten intolerance.
The executive chef of NAIT’s Ernest’s restaurant, Michael Hassall, has spent quite a bit of time looking into gluten alternatives. He brings diners those option during a wine dinner devoted to gluten alternatives on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. The dishes will be paired with wine for a unique dining experience.
But that’s not all February holds for Edmonton diners interested in themed events. Hassall has cre -
Oilers in 60: There's something in the water here in Edmonton
In an effort to explain the past decade of despair that has been hockey in Edmonton, Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson stood at a podium Wednesday and uttered words so baffling an entire city had to stop to collectively say ‘Huh!?’.
“But there’s something in the water here in Edmonton that we don’t have right and we have to get that figured out.”
Yup. You read that right.
There. Is. Something. In. The. Water.
Surely, this has nothing to do with a management core who, d -

Thursday's letters: Oiler picks should refuse to sign
Why would any young player want to waste his talent on this team?
My advice to any future Oiler draft pick is to have the fortitude of Eric Lindros and not sign with the Oilers but rather return to the following year’s draft.
One can only imagine how Connor McDavid would like to escape this charade already.

Opinion: Election-advertising law is unconstitutional
Last summer, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation put up a billboard that read: “You can’t buy ‘social licence’ when it’s not for sale.” Premier Rachel Notley and other politicians have claimed the carbon tax would create the social licence necessary to get pipelines built. Yet, Albertans now pay more to heat their homes and eco-activists are still hanging from bridges to stop oil tankers and blockading pipelines.
But the billboard is about much more than challen -
Keith Gerein: Details of Jason Kenney's residence scandal make for tepid controversy
As “scandals” go, where Jason Kenney chose to call home during his time as a federal cabinet minister is one of the more convoluted I’ve seen.
If it even is a scandal.
It’s been hard to have a rational thought on the matter amid the ear-splitting noise generated from both sides of the political fence the past few days.
While one faction has railed about the hypocrisy of a fiscal conservative allegedly exploiting parliamentary housing subsidies, the other has fired back ju -

Watch: Students move into Mill Creek School
On Wednesday, after 15 months of construction, the 340 students at Mill Creek loaded up their backpacks in their old school and filed down the sidewalk to the new building, right next door.

The pipes of the heating and cooling system on the school’s ceiling remain uncovered and a half-metre wide glass window gives students a glimpse into the school’s concrete -
Future of animal abuse enforcement unclear as Edmonton Humane Society withdraws services
The Edmonton Humane Society will end enforcement of animal abuse at the end of January, leaving the city in limbo about how animal protection calls will be handled.

Mill Creek students ready to monitor their new school's energy efficiency
After spending eight years in Mill Creek School, Kaitlyn Jesse felt sad the 1947 edifice is destined for demolition.
The 10-year-old’s nostalgia for the old building was overshadowed on Wednesday, when she saw her new fifth-grade classroom for the first time.
“It’s so modern and I love it,” said Jesse, who started at Mill Creek as a three-year-old preschooler. “I like the lights and all the decorations and stuff. And I like how all the spaces are so open.”
