Edmonton Oilers finally squeezed the trigger last night on their beleaguered General Manager Peter Chiarelli.
At the same time, the organization ultimately answered a demand from its passionate fan base. I think it’s unfair to say that fans “wanted blood”. I think the large majority of them have laid out their hard-earned money for some time and deserve better.
So to want someone who was seen to be responsible for the lack of results on the ice to pay for yet another failure is

Notes from the Dome: Icefields Trail project called off, Bighorn Country town hall scheduled
Ottawa has called off the a $66-million proposal for a biking and walking trail through Jasper National Park.
The decision was made after discussions with stakeholder groups, Indigenous partners and members of the public, said a federal government news release Wednesday.
“Parks Canada will be withdrawing from the Icefields Trail project and the funds originally earmarked for the project will be re-allocated to support priorities within the agency,” said the release.

UCP smashes 2018 fundraising totals, but all major parties break donation rules
The UCP has left every other political party in Alberta in its dust when it comes to 2018 fundraising figures released by Elections Alberta, but will likely have to pay back more than $30,000 after breaking contribution limits.
The UCP isn’t alone in falling foul of the individual $4,000 donation limits set by the NDP government two years ago — the NDP itself broke the rules to the tune of $24,785.
The Alberta and Liberal parties also had donors exceed the $4,000 limit.

Watch: Oilers beat writers analyze Oilers next move
Sports columnist Terry Jones and hockey beat writers Derek Van Diest and Rob Tychkowski discuss the Edmonton Oilers’ firing of general manager Peter Chiarelli on Jan. 23, 2019, following a press conference with Oilers chief executive officer Bob Nicholson.
Chiarelli was let go the night before, during the team’s loss to the last-place Detroit Red Wings.
Nicholson, speaking to media at the Oilers Hall of Fame room at Rogers Place, said they aren’t looking to fill Chiarelli&rsquo -
Tip from Australian police leads to child porn arrest in central Alberta
A tip from Australian police helped the province’s integrated internet child exploitation unit to arrest a central Alberta man for making and possessing child pornography.
The 34-year-old man was arrested by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) officers at a home in Eckville on Jan. 10. The same man was then re-arrested by Mounties on Jan. 18 after he allegedly breached his release conditions relating to internet access.
The original tip off came from a specialized onli -
Watch: Keith Gretzky takes over Oilers GM role for now
Bob Nicholson CEO and Vice-Chair, Oilers Entertainment Group, said the decision was made about firing General Manager Peter Chiarelli during the team’s lackluster game versus the Detroit Red Wings in Edmonton on Tuesday. He said the team isn’t going to make big changes right away but must find a way to win as their season has fallen apart.
As of Jan 23, the team stands second last in the Western Conference, only ahead of the Los Angeles Kings. Nicholson said that while they will have -

Man charged after four cargo vans full of items stolen from multiple construction sites
A man has been charged after a police investigation resulted in the recovery of numerous stolen property — enough to fill four cargo vans — taken from multiple construction sites across the city.

Edmonton Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson: "There's something in the water here in Edmonton that we don't have right"
Edmonton Oilers Bob Nicholson made a few key points at his press conference on Wednesday, namely that it’s going to take some time to find the right GM.
In the last decade the team has had eight coaches and three GMs, the Journal’s Rob Tychkowski pointed out to Nicholson.
Nicholson then stressed he’ll be patient in hiring a new one.
“We’re not going to be in a real rush to get a general manager. We have to get the right one. And if that takes us some time, because w -
UCP smashes 2018 fundraising totals
The UCP has left every other political party in Alberta in their dust when it comes to 2018 fundraising figures released by Elections Alberta.
The official opposition raised $6.66 million in 2018, almost double the $3.39 million brought in by the NDP from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
In fact, the UCP raised more in its fourth quarter — $3.92 million — than the governing party raised the entire year.
Both the UCP and NDP’s fundraising efforts dwarfed those of other parties during 2018.

Spock in Plato’s Stepchildren, where he sings the beautiful Maiden Wine, aka Bitter Dregs.
Are you getting the sense modern science fiction is terrified to stray one inch from its safe spaces? Peter Chiarelli's 10 best moves and 10 worst moves as Edmonton Oilers general manager
It wasn’t all bad in Peter Chiarelli’s time as GM of the Edmonton Oilers. In 2016-17 he put together a series of deals that helped end Edmonton’s Decade of Darkness. The team not only made the playoffs in Connor McDavid’s second NHL season, the Oilers won a round against San Jose and took the Anaheim Ducks to the second round.
Edmonton looked to be moving forward but top d-man Andrej Sekera got injured in the Ducks series, kicking off a chain of events from which Chiarell -
Edmonton Humane Society will stop enforcement on animal abuse
The Edmonton Humane Society’s board of directors has voted to end enforcement of the Animal Protection Act (APA) at the end of January, with no governing agency named to take over.
The humane society has been providing enforcement services within the city funded through donations and a city grant, but without any provincial funding, the society said in a news release Tuesday. The decision to withdraw enforcement services was made in early December 2018.

Watch: Oilers beaten by the Wings 3-2
Edmonton Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock had little to say after his team lost their third straight game at home, this time 3-2 against the Detroit Red Wings in Edmonton on Tuesday January 22, 2019.
The Detroit Red Wings, with four wins in their previous 19 games, came in and beat the anemic Oilers 3-2 Tuesday night, handing them their third straight loss at home as they finished a six-game Rogers home stand 2-4 against Florida, Arizona, Carolina, Detroit, Buffalo and Calgary with only the Flame -
Oilers in 60: Heads explode as Oilers fire Peter Chiarelli
It finally happened.
The timing of it is questionable, but the Edmonton Oilers fired general manager Peter Chiarelli just hours after they dropped a 3-2 decision to the league’s worst Detroit Red Wings, and just one day after the team announced a $13.5 million extension for goaltender Mikko Koskinen.
Huh?
From a fan’s point of view, the move makes sense. Chiarelli had to go — no question. But why do it mid-season? Why would the team allow Chiarelli to sign Koskinen to such a lu -

Wednesday's letters: Speed up sidewalk-clearing enforcement
Re. “Three ways Edmonton could get a grip on icy sidewalks,” Elise Stolte, Jan. 21
I agree with Elise Stolte’s column where she points out the concerns with sidewalks that we all have in the winter, especially among people who have slipped and fallen.
Due to my own painful experience with 311, I felt that I could add to her point about 311. My view is that enforcement needs to be sped up when investigating these concerns and problem properties should not be given warnings unles -
Editorial: Unplug petty TV policy
The Edmonton Remand Centre is a provincial institution that houses people accused of crimes awaiting their day in court. Seven out of 10 inmates there haven’t been convicted of their alleged wrongdoing. In the eyes of the law, they are innocent until proven guilty.
So why then does the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General’s department inflict a pre-emptive punishment by denying them TVs in their cells?
When the new facility opened six years ago, every cell was wired to have a televi -
Press Gallery interview: Matt Jeneroux talks pipelines, Alberta separation and two upcoming elections
Matt Jeneroux, the Conservative MP for Edmonton Riverbend, stops by the studio this week for a wide ranging interview to talk about a busy year ahead in the world of federal and provincial politics.

Elise Stolte: Two years later, looking for hope in Edmonton's pernicious work culture
It’s been two years since city manager Linda Cochrane would have seen results that later shocked council and the larger community.

On Thursday, we’ll see if there’s been a change. City officials are scheduled to release the 2018 employee engag -

Player grades: Another weak showing on home ice sparks Chiarelli's demise as Edmonton Oilers' GM
Red Wings 3, Oilers 2
One might think that a team featuring the fastest thing on two skates, Connor McDavid, wouldn’t be routinely “out-quicked” by rank and file opponents. Except guess what, that just happened three times in three games as the Edmonton Oilers once again lost a battle of speed and skill, this time to a team that limped into town tied for last place in the NHL.
That didn’t stop the Detroit Red Wings from putting the Oilers to sleep for two excruciating per -

One result of that work will be a series of 29 online vide -

New schools should be energy neutral, public school board says
Newly constructed Alberta schools should be “net zero,” Edmonton public school trustees believe — equipped to both conserve energy and generate it from renewable resources.
On Tuesday, public school trustees approved a motion 7-to-1 to ask Alberta’s education minister to make future school construction projects energy-neutral by equipping them to generate at least as much energy as they consume.
Trustee Michael Janz, who proposed the idea, said the province should embrace -
