"Friendly confines"? Not so much for Edmonton Oilers and their woeful home-ice performance
Game Day 50: Red Wings at Oilers
One last game to go before the Edmonton Oilers hit a much-needed 10-day break in their schedule, perhaps enough time to allow Oscar Klefbom to return to health after an extended injury absence.
No guarantee Klefbom alone is enough to turn around a club that has lost its mojo, especially in their own end of the ice. Those defensive problems are particularly acute in the supposed “friendly confines” of Rogers Place, which in recent times has proven to b -
Couple on the run after 2017 Lac La Biche killing arrested by RCMP
Two people on the run from police for over a year for their alleged roles in the slaying of a man in Lac La Biche have been arrested by Mounties in Two Hills.

Side by side: Country star Dierks Bentley and folk mainstay Loudon Wainwright III
Truth to tell, there aren’t a lot of similarities between Loudon Wainwright III and Dierks Bentley.
One is a massively popular mainstream singer, the other a perennial but deeply respected cult figure in the folk world, patriarch of an extended musical family who made the charts with exactly one song, Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road, back in 1972. Bentley has had much more of an impact on the radio, charting number one hits from his 2001 debut on. Home, Somewhere on a Beach, and Am I -
Local developer links food and history in refurbished buildings
Two trendy food halls, a neighbourhood eatery and a bakery with a backstory are just three culinary concepts with which Ivan Beljan has filled his plate.
“Food is what connects people and everybody has to eat,” said Beljan of Beljan Development, commenting on his attraction to projects with a culinary element.

Jazz, roots artists conjure up images of home in new discs
It’s called Pictures of Us; that’s also the easiest way of describing the 12 songs that fill out Braden Gates’ new fourth release, the best album yet from this wonderfully talented singer, songwriter, guitarist and fiddler. Gates marks the release of the album Friday at Festival Place.
Not one to spill his guts, Edmonton’s Gates is loathe to explain the songs. But they do speak for themselves, like snapshots of places or moments in time that are not necessarily meant to s -

STARS’ new show-stopping show homes are ready and waiting.
Four fully furnished homes are up for grabs, as well as what could be Alberta’s largest 50/50 prize ever — a payout that could reach $2 million — as STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) launches the 2019 edition of its fundraising lottery.
Officials note that this year’s prizes are great, but they point out that STARS’ mission is even greater.

Growing Things: Protect pussy willow tree to ensure winter survival
Q: I was given a miniature pussy willow tree that is now in a very small pot. Given the weather I want to keep it alive through the winter and possibly plant it outside, if it makes it. How should I take care of it, and can the tree be planted outdoors in Edmonton? This gift means a lot to me as it reminds me of my sister, who passed away this summer, and her love of pussy willows. Thanking you for the attention given this matter.
A: My sincere condolences on the passing of your sister. I assume -

Cold Lake fighter pilot fined for violating National Defence Act
Cold Lake — A fighter pilot received a $2,000 fine at a military court martial Monday after pleading guilty to flying below an altitude less than the minimum height authorized, in violation of the National Defence Act.
However, it could have been worse for Capt. Christopher Mileusnic, based at 4 Wing Cold Lake, if the judge had decided to issue the maximum sentence allowed for such an offence, which could have been imprisonment for less than two years.
However, Military Judge Lt.-Col. Loui -
Toronto sports commentators reading doom and gloom in Connor McDavid's facial expression (again)
Connor McDavid’s frustration about losing and his determination to whip his team into shape is being taken as a sign that there’s dissension in the Edmonton Oilers locker room, at least by TSN commentator Dave Poulin.
Here’s what McDavid had to say on Monday, coming off two terrible losses over the weekend where McDavid himself didn’t play his best hockey, the same as almost everyone else on the Oilers.

Tuesday's letters: Fund mental-health services
Re. “Crisis calls continue to plague bridge,” Jan. 18
I am writing in response to the recent article about the number of mental health calls related to the bridge and the fact that they have not gone down significantly since the barriers were introduced.
When the renovations were considered several years ago — which I was not in favour of — I reached out to Edmonton’s crisis centre and asked what they would prefer $2.5 million to be spent on. They indicated that the -
Opinion: Indexing takes politics out of AISH, income support, seniors benefits
An election is in the air. We can all feel it. The energy is beginning to build. Politicians have begun making promises. Historically, the party in power begins to sweeten the pot for their target groups.
This month, some important changes to the way we financially support some of the most vulnerable in our society were made by the provincial government. Payments to the disabled, elderly and children in poverty were all indexed. That means that every year, based on the rise in the cost of living -
RCMP using old files, new techniques in attempt to crack cold cases of three missing women
Exactly one year has passed since RCMP Staff Sgt. Jason Zazulak, the head of K Division’s historical homicide unit, put out a call to the public for tips on cold cases involving three missing women: Shelly Ann Bacsu, Stephanie Stewart and Deanna McNeil.
All are presumed dead. Their remains have never been found.
In the year since that public appeal, RCMP have re-examined old evidence and gone back to witnesses, but have also listened to potential new information and used modern technology -
