Attempted murder charges laid against High Level man who shot at Mounties
A man from northern Alberta is facing two counts of attempted murder after he and police exchanged gunfire at a home south of High Level earlier this month.
Mounties arrived at a home just after 8 p.m. on Jan. 12 when police say a man produced a firearm and shot at officers.
An officer returned fire and struck the man who then barricaded himself in the residence following the shooting.
The RCMP emergency response team, a canine unit and air services were called to the scene as a result.

'She was a good person' neighbour remembers the victim of fatal weeken
“She was a good person.”
That’s how neighbour, Paul Phinnemore, is remembering Barbara Nelson, a woman who died of injuries in hospital after what police describe as an alleged home invasion Friday night near 120 Avenue and 61 Street.
Phinnemore said he has known Nelson for close to 20 years but hadn’t seen in her until the two came face to face earlier this month when she told him she’d recently moved into the neighbouring home.

Two arrested in northern Alberta methamphetamine bust
Mounties have seized what they say is methamphetamine with an estimated street value of up to $40,000 from a home and a vehicle in the hamlet of Ardmore in northern Alberta.
A man and a woman were arrested during the bust on Saturday, which was part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation by Bonnyville and Cold Lake RCMP in the area.
Police seized 393 grams of methamphetamine, more than $2,000 in cash, drug paraphernalia and a conducted energy weapon, RCMP said in a Monday news release -
Edmonton Oilers demote Caleb Jones but not Brandon Manning. Huh!?
The Edmonton Oilers have sent Caleb Jones to Bakersfield of the AHL. Bob Stauffer of the Oilers tweeted: “All things considered Caleb had a strong showing for the Oilers. Had a difficult last few games…so did the whole team. Athletic with upside, player to watch in the future.”My takeWhen Hitchcock talked about having Kevin Gravel and Alex Petrovic and needing to use them, I wondered who might sit. It makes sense to waive Ryan Spooner, but Ty Rattie? What are Edmonton Oilers up to?
The Edmonton Oilers have waived Ryan Spooner and Ty Rattie, multiple sources are reporting.
My takeI get waiving Spooner as he did little, though he’s hardly alone in that when it comes to Edmonton Oilers wingers. But Ty Rattie? The Oilers needed to waive him like a fish needs a bicycle. He’s one of the few Oilers wingers who can play with some real skill, who can take and make a pass. Are we to believe that Rattie is a weaker player than Tobias Rieder? Than Milan Lucic? I don’ -

In a Monday news release, Rimbey RCMP said two males are responsible for all five break and enters. The suspects were driving a black pickup and stole a flat-deck trailer that belongs to Nikirk Construction.

Months later, RCMP still investigating Sherwood Park explosions
It’s a case that will almost certainly never see a courtroom — a deliberately set explosion in the bowels of a municipal building in Sherwood Park that ended with the lone suspect dead.

RCMP say Kosolowsky, 21, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after triggering an explosion beneath a half-ton pickup truck parked in the Str -

Edmonton weather: It's not not t-shirt weather
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Monday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -8.4 C with 7 km/h winds out of the west, southwest contributing to a -12 wind chill.
It’s not exactly t-shirt weather but it’s not not exactly t-shirt weather, either. I’m not sure what that means, but let’s just say a slight wind chill in the morning will finally give way to warmer temperatures in the afternoon as fo -
Death, vehicle fire in northwest Edmonton deemed non-criminal: police
One person is dead following a vehicle fire in an industrial area of northwest Edmonton Sunday evening that police have now deemed non-criminal in nature.
Emergency crews responded to multiple reports of a vehicle fire around 6:30 p.m. on 164 Street just north of 137 Avenue, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services district Chief Todd Weiss said.
Fire crews found the vehicle parked on the side of the road fully involved and worked to extinguish the flames, Weiss said. The sole occupant was found deceased i -
U of A oncology doctor to represent province on Terry Fox Research Institute executive
When Dr. David Eisenstat decided to organize a camp charity run in the summer of 1981 inspired by the courageous cancer battle fought by Terry Fox, he had no idea his story with the cancer foundation would become full circle.
“I was a long-distance runner at the time and doing cross-country and I thought, was there anything I could do,” Eisenstat said.

'There won't be another David Edey': City remembers remarkable clerk, family man
David Edey had a talent for problem-solving.
The career public servant, who served as Edmonton’s city clerk for more than a decade, died on Jan. 10 at the age of 66.
Even in his death he made an effort to leave the world better than he found it. He suffered from multiple system atrophy, a rare degenerative neurological disorder. During the last few years of his life, he made arrangements for his brain tissue to be donated to the Mayo Clinic so that it will be available to researchers study -

Elise Stolte: Worst walk on my commute is city-owned. A winter city doesn't have to be this painful
If I fall on my way to work this winter, my bet is it will be on a city-owned sidewalk. That’s why I shudder every time people lobby for the city to take over extra snow clearing.
The issue is at a neighbourhood school. The pathway from the parking lot to the school doors is the school’s responsibility and is immaculate. But the heavily-used sidewalk around the block — the city’s responsibility — is treacherous. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t see bare pavemen -
Cult of Hockey Player Grades: The Edmonton Oilers get battered and tattered 7-4 by the Hurricanes
The Edmonton Oilers needed a big response game Sunday after an emotional loss to Calgary the night before.
They didn’t get it. In fact, I didn’t detect much emotion at all out of far too many players in what was an embarrassing effort against a team like Carolina. The Hurricanes are not world beaters. Not even close. But hey…lets not diss the ‘Canes. They earned their keep tonight with a tenacious fore-check and capitalized on the many Oilers errors. And Edmonton didn&rs -

Nick Lees: Songs, history and haggis on hand to celebrate Scotland's original superstar
We Canadian Scots, some 4.7 million of us — or 14.35 per cent of Canada’s population — invite you to join us Friday in singing Auld Lang Syne.
We will celebrate the 260th birthday of Scotland’s poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). who penned the words to what many consider the national anthem of the human race.
