A 76-year-old man who used a wheelchair has died a week after being hit by a pickup truck in the city’s northeast.
In a release Saturday, police said a male pedestrian in an electric wheelchair was travelling westbound across 50 Street at 165 Avenue when he was hit by a Ford pickup truck around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 12.
The 32-year-old male driver of the truck was allegedly travelling southbound on 50 Street when the collision happened. The man was struck in a marked crosswalk, police said.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 59-year-old woman after police were called to an alleged home invasion involving gunfire in northeast Edmonton.
Barbara Nelson — along with a 56-year-old wounded man — was found injured inside the home near 120 Avenue and 61 Street, in the Montrose neighbourhood, after officers were called around 8:50 p.m. Friday, police said in a Saturday release.
The attackers fled before police arrived.

Fake dolla dolla bills: Some circulating in Edmonton area, warn Mounties
Counterfeit Canadian bills are circulating in the Spruce Grove area, warn RCMP.
Earlier this week, Spruce Grove RCMP were alerted by local businesses to a number of fake bills.
The currency in question was missing several security features and was printed on regular paper instead of the new polymer material.
In addition to the fake money, one legitimate bill was discovered to have been altered.
RCMP are advising area businesses to be cautious when accepting any denominations of cash and to -

A 682-tonne oversized load to disrupt Edmonton-area highways this weekend
Highway motorists beware.
Another wide load is being moved along Edmonton-area highways this weekend and travel is expected to be disrupted.
The 682-tonne, 63-metre-long piece of petrochemical equipment, called a de-ethanizer stripper, is moving from Edmonton to the Industrial Heartland in the Fort Saskatchewan area.
The stripper is expected to use highways 14 and 21 over four days, between Jan. 19 and 22.
The stripper separates ethane from liquid natural gas to be reused elsewhere in -
Cult of Hockey Game Day #48: The Oilers plan to box the Flames in the latest BOA may not be what you may think
Cult of Hockey Game Day #48Calgary Flames (31-13-5) at Edmonton Oilers (23-21-3)
The Edmonton Oilers face a challenge tonight that both plays heavily into their effort to stay in a playoff race but also to help define just what this team really is.
2 points against their long-time divisional rivals could land the Oilers with 51 points and in sole possession of 6th place in the conference, holding the 1st Wild Card spot. There is separation between the top and bottom clubs in the West. Edmonton d -
Saturday's letters: Save seniors' ride program
Re. “Let’s not lose this beautiful thing,” Elise Stolte, Jan. 16
My wife is a member of Drive Happiness and I can tell you we would be in serious trouble without this program, as would every other member.
Try getting from Century Park to the Northgate Joint and Bone Centre with a brain injury and no car. A taxi would probably cost you $90.
This is an amazing example of truly awesome volunteers helping those in need. With this government’s “aging in place” -
Opinion: Goal of protecting the Bighorn has a long history
The current proposal regarding the Bighorn backcountry not only addresses the recent debate about land use in the region; it culminates a long history of conservation proposals in the region.
Contrary to claims that the proposal is somehow new and a modern threat to long-time activities in the area, the idea to protect the Bighorn is — as the saying goes — as old as the hills.
Defending the Bighorn has been a priority for governments and Albertans for much of the last century. The ne -

Watch: Oil Spills: Edmonton Oilers need to reverse shot misfortune
The puck is in the Edmonton Oilers’ end far too often these days.
The team has been giving up many quality shots to the opposition, and they’re not firing pucks at enemy goalies nearly enough.
The Oilers have been consistently outshot since mid-December, following the losses of Oscar Klefbom and Kris Russell to injury from their blue line (Russell has since returned). In their 14 games from Dec. 16, 2018, through their date with the Vancouver Canucks a month later, the Oilers have be -
Evan Bouchard compared to Griffin Reinhart? Hmm
TSN’s Craig Button did not put Evan Bouchard of the Oilers on the TSN list of Top 50 NHL-affiliated prospects and he explained his reasoning at length today on Jason Gregor’s radio show:
“I like Evan Bouchard,” Button said. “I think he’s got lots of capabilities. But I know one things that’s essential to success at the National Hockey League level and that’s a pace and tempo that Evan Bouchard has to improve. It has to be much better.

An infrastructure project which will overhaul the stretch of road between Highway 16 and Highway 16A in the Acheson industrial area is slated to cost between $85 million and $105 million.
A new overpass will separate the Canadian National Railway tracks from Highway 60 so that traffic will no longer be delayed by passing trains, said the province. The next step in the process will involve land acquisition.

Election commissioner reprimands Rebel Media, Canadian Taxpayers Federation
Alberta’s election commissioner is considering a $5,500 fine against Rebel Media for violating rules set out for third-party advertisers, a move Rebel founder Ezra Levant describes as “thuggish behaviour.”

Keith Gerein: Notley, Kenney both on the defensive as pre-election controversies ramp up
For those Albertans who are eagerly awaiting — or perhaps dreading — the upcoming provincial election campaign, Rachel Notley’s NDP government finally came forward this week with a date.
March 18.
Mark it in red on your calendars. Or in green.
After all, it’s the day after St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s possible Notley plans to be feeling lucky.
Except March 18 isn’t the date for the election.
Instead, it’s the day the NDP has set aside for a throne sp -
Cam Talbot has no trade value — the hard truth from Brian Burke
This in from Brian Burke, the long-time NHL executive turned commentator, talking to Bob Stauffer of the Oilers about the trade value of Edmonton Oilers goalie Cam Talbot: “I don’t think you can move him.”
You got to ride him out, Stauffer asked?

One-stop service shop opens to support Edmonton veterans
Growing more and more frustrated as he worked to get a local veteran the help he needed, an Edmonton man knew something had to change with the way veteran services operates within the city.
