Premier Rachel Notley accused opposition leader Jason Kenney of planning to install toll roads if he wins the upcoming election, but the UCP fired back calling the comments a “desperate attack.”
“The fact of the matter is that (Kenney) told the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce that in some situations it might be appropriate to look at user fees for infrastructure as it relates to roads,” she told reporters Thursday.
“That very clearly signals tolls.”

'There are more scandals coming': Former UCP MLA urges Kenney to clear the air
Former United Conservative MLA Prab Gill has warned his ex-caucus colleagues of more UCP nomination scandals that could deflate the party’s chances in the upcoming election.
In an email obtained by Postmedia, Gill pleaded with MLAs Wednesday afternoon to “pressure (leader) Jason Kenney into clearing the air” about the host of allegations over internal UCP machinations.
Those include Jeff Callaway being a kamikaze leadership candidate to take down former Wildrose leader Bri -

Growing Things: Some guesswork required for leaf drop, tomato 'catfacing'
Q: We have two 12-foot Ohio Buckeye trees beside our driveway, about six feet apart. Last year the leaves on one of them suddenly started turning bright red in August, and soon all were red, and then they fell off. The other tree stayed perfectly green, eventually turning yellow as normal.
It happened again this year, and I can’t see what the problem could be. Their conditions are identical, and if it’s some tiny pest at work it would surely spread to the other tree. Last year we too -
Garden Hits & Myths: Dwarf plants provide perfect fit for smaller yards
At this time of year, one doesn’t have to look far to find a list of New Year’s self-improvement resolutions. So, I thought that there wouldn’t be any harm to toss in a horticulture-related resolution for good measure.
Here it goes: ‘Be it resolved in 2019 that you will not plant any trees or shrubs that are too big for your yard.’
One of the most common complaints that I hear from property owners is that their trees and shrubs have outgrown their allotted spac -

Both the Capital and Metro lines will down from 5 a.m. until the end of the day. Trains will still run on the tracks, but passengers will not be able to board.
The city closed LRT service for a half day in early January for similar tests. Scrutiny of Thales’ work is expected to continue for a number of months, and a news release Thursday said officials anticipa -

Police investigate fatal collision on Yellowhead Trail and 149 Street
Morning motorists are being asked to avoid a popular stretch of street Thursday morning as police investigate a fatal collision at Yellowhead Trail and 149 Street.
The collision occurred at around 2:40 a.m. when police say a man driving a Ford Escape SUV was struck from behind by an eastbound semi-tractor trailer unit. Edmonton weather: How much chill could a wind chill chill if a wind chill could chill wind?
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -18.9 C with 14 km/h winds out of the east contributing to a -27 wind chill.
Watch out for that wind chill, it’s going to be particularly nasty today. The fine folks at Environment Canada are calling for wind chills of -26 today with a risk of a frostbite, and -28 wind chills overnight. So that’s splendid.

Thursday's letters: No place for roast pigs at festival
I’m writing to share my experience this past weekend at the Deep Freeze Festival and ask others for help in asking festival organizers to improve their event.
It is a wonderful festival overall, encouraging Edmontonians to embrace winter and offers great art and music. I was sad and shocked, however, to see that they are continuing with an activity that I thought they had stopped a couple of years ago and that would be the killing and roasting of whole piglets.

Editorial: China shows its true nature
Late Monday, the federal government updated its advisory on travel to China.
Instead of merely urging Canadians to “exercise a high degree of caution” because of “isolated acts of violence, including bombings and protests,” Global Affairs finally acknowledged the real threat — the heightened risk of arbitrary arrests for Canadians in China.
The belated warning comes more than six weeks after Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver follo -

Canada Revenue Agency tells Edmonton man he's dead, claws back GST and carbon tax rebates
Dale Strohmaier’s official time of death was some time in 2015 — he’s not sure exactly when, or why.
In fact, he wasn’t aware of his demise until Monday.
That’s when Strohmaier ripped open an envelope addressed to “the estate of the late Dale Strohmaier” from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), on behalf of the Alberta government. The document, a notice from the Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate, said dead people aren’t entitled to carbon t -

City hall wading pool renovation on track for 2019 opening
Renovations to the wading pool in front of city hall are on track to finish in time for summer, according to the city.
