KaldrSaga
Beer, Norse mythology and queer storytelling are all tied together in Cardiac Theatre’s KaldrSaga: A Queer Tavern Drama for a Midwinter’s Night, over at the Almanac on Whyte until January 26. Local artists and performers Nasra Adem and Jake Tkacyzk are front and centre in this two-hander, which uses the old mythological tales to spin out their own queer origin stories, with appearances by characters like Ratatoskr and the God of Thunder himself, Thor. Pink Gorilla roars into town with the Goldilocks of pizza
If you spend any time with Mark Bellows and Ryan Brodziak, you will remember that time. It is the same with their new restaurant, Pink Gorilla Pizzeria — a name, and a place, that sticks with you.
The co-owners of The Local Omnivore (10933 120 St.) for the past several years, Brodziak and Bellows actually got their start in the pizza business. The two met at Famoso Neapolitan Pizza some years back, eventually turning their hospitality expertise into a food truck that morphed into a br -
Comic relief: Gaffigan's clean comedy centred around family, food and fatherhood
By his own admission, Jim Gaffigan would have been a very odd choice to host the White House Correspondents Dinner.
It was a gig he was offered but turned down in 2018.
This is not because he isn’t funny or is ill-equipped to handle tough audiences. After all, this is the guy who opened for Pope Francis in 2015, performing for a massive crowd of not-entirely-amused and occasionally hostile fellow Catholics in Philadelphia.
But Gaffigan is not a political comedian. The White House Correspon -

Welsman, Way North offer up jazz on their own terms
Carol Welsman is one of the Canada’s most accomplished, most driven jazz singers and a six-time Juno nominee, but as time goes on she has come to understand more and more about what she does and why she’s doing it.
“I look at everything I do now as something that has to offer amazing levels of pleasure,” she explains, “something that’s fun and speaks to the people. And that seems to be happening.”
Following a cancer scare over a decade ago, and the recen -
Indigenous art show Mothering Spaces glows with mother artists
When was the last time you witnessed children actively involved with and officially present at an “adult” art show? Not as mere subjects depicted on the walls — but meaningfully woven into the artwork itself, including in performance pieces?
Mothering Spaces, an Indigenous art show at Grant MacEwan’s Mitchell Gallery opening Thursday, is questioning the presumption of what a typical gallery exhibition looks like, including where lines of belonging are invisibly drawn.

Edmonton police officer admits to slapping, kicking her ex-spouse after recruit class grad ceremony
An Edmonton Police Service constable has been suspended 40 hours without pay after admitting to striking her former common-law spouse — another member of the service — hours after she graduated from recruit training class.

The Targeted Response to Auto-theft Prevention (TRAP) team, in its second year of operation, laid 1,035 auto-theft related charges against 236 people, police said in a Tuesday afternoon news release.

Edmonton Oilers claim centre Colby Cave, look to plug gap from Strome trade
The Edmonton Oilers have claimed centre Colby Cave on waivers from Boston, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. My take Call me an Oilers fan. Five minutes ago I’d never heard the name Colby Cave. 'Self-centered politics': MLA Rick Strankman quits UCP to sit as independent
Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman says he’s quitting the United Conservative Party to sit as an independent, citing “self-centered politics” and an “undemocratic atmosphere.”
Strankman was elected in 2012 and again in 2015 under the Wildrose banner before the party merged with the Progressive Conservatives. He lost the UCP nomination in September to candidate Nate Horner.
“Since the amalgamation of the Wildrose and the Progressive Conservative p -

Tuesday's letters: Trucker's guilty plea restores faith
I am amazed. My faith in humanity has received a huge boost from Jaskirat Singh Sidhu’s guilty plea in the Humboldt Broncos crash.
Although his actions created a horrendous effect, Mr. Sidhu seems to have a level of basic human decency that is sadly rare these days.
I am tempted to hope that, in the long run, he receives some appropriate reward for his honesty; one that will not add to the suffering of his victims and their families.
Having said that, I fervently hope that Justin Trudeau d -
Opinion: It's time to accept that Alberta's carbon tax works
The carbon levy has become a political punching bag for politicians and journalists that want to win votes and sell newspapers. This is very unfortunate as the levy — which has been in place for almost two years now — hasn’t damaged the economy or cost jobs.
What the levy is doing is funding important infrastructure like rural public transportation, light rail transit in Edmonton and Calgary, a 33-per-cent reduction in the small business tax, rebates for Albertans making less t -

Alberta Catholic schools need to hire Catholic teachers to retain their identity, says an association representing the school boards.

Keith Gerein: UCP touts 'strong and free' Alberta, but party should check its own record on freedom
Choose Alberta’s Future.
You might remember that eye-rolling snore of a slogan used by the Progressive Conservatives in the 2015 provincial election.
It was one of the worst campaign mottos in recent memory, remarkable only for the stunning piece of irony it became for the ill-fated Jim Prentice government.
Voters did indeed Choose Alberta’s Future, but it certainly wasn’t in favour of the PCs, who were decimated down to 10 seats.

Player grades: Oilers roll Sabres & are now tied for final playoff spot
The Edmonton Oilers finally beat the Buffalo Sabres. The mediocre Oilers had lost four straight to the hapless Sabres, only to break the streak with 7-2 clobbering of the Sabres on Monday night at Edmonton’s downtown arena.
It was more of a track meet than a hockey game, with a couple of shot putters Milan Lucic and Zack Kassian each scoring twice.

Edmonton Oilers Coach Postgame
Edmonton Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock postgame interview after defeating the Buffalo Sabres 7-2.
With the Oilers scoring three in the first period on their first five shots it was the first time all season that they had that many in a game without any contribution from either McDavid, who missed the skills competition Sunday with the flu, or Draisaitl.

Senior fears looming Edmonton bus route changes will leave him stranded
Options for transit riders who may end up stranded in their neighbourhoods when the bus route redesign comes into effect in 2020 will be discussed at the city’s urban planning committee Tuesday.
So-called “first kilometre/last kilometre” solutions might be just the ticket for Aspen Gardens resident Jerome Martin, who is concerned about what the bus route redesign will mean for him.
