Chef Jan Trittenbach and managing partner Jon Elson are considering their options as Solstice Regional Cuisine shifts to another business model.
After four years on 124 St., Elson acknowledges that, at the end of the day, not enough people were coming into the restaurant to make it a viable business. The restaurant will close in its present format on Feb. 16.
“We were idealistic enough to think that just making good food and drink would be enough,” says Elson.

ETS cash fare will jump to $3.50 on Feb. 1
Transit riders will have to fork over an extra quarter for a single cash fare, beginning Feb. 1.
The hike from $3.25 to $3.50 was approved by city council during its four-year budget deliberations in late 2018.
City staff had proposed increasing the fare to $4 by 2021. Council only agreed to the 2019 bump, electing to wait for administration to prepare a fare policy report before deciding whether to go ahead with the increase to $4, which could make Edmonton’s single fare the most expensiv -

Highway robbery: Man charged after attempting to steal snowplow
A 26-year-old man has been charged after attempting to steal a snowplow from a good samaritan along a highway north of Edmonton.
At around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, a man driving a snowplow on Highway 43, west of Valleyview, stopped to help a truck driver who had hit the ditch, said Valleyview RCMP on Wednesday.
One of the people in the truck then assaulted the snowplow driver and tried to steal the snowplow.
RCMP responded and the snowplow was not taken or damaged.

Man wanted after two northern Alberta weekend shootings
Mounties are looking for a 30-year-old man after two separate shootings — one of which left a victim with injuries — in northern Alberta over the weekend.
Desmarais RCMP on Wednesday said they are investigating two Saturday complaints of a man firing a gun at victims in two separate locations.
One victim was injured and is recovering, the other was not harmed, police said.
RCMP continue to try to find the gunman who investigators believe may be in the Slave Lake and Athabasca area. T -
Watch: Edmontonians rally in support of Wet’suwet’en First Nation
Approximately 100 people gathered in Edmonton’s Beaver Hills House Park Tuesday evening to voice their support for the Wet’suwet’en First Nation.
The Wet’suwet’en are currently blocking access to a planned pipeline on their lands in northern B.C. On Monday, RCMP breached a checkpoint created on unceded Wet’suwet’en First Nation territory and arrested 14 people.
The checkpoint was put in place three weeks ago after a B.C. Supreme Court ruling an -
Woman faces additional charges after 65 horses seized from Alberta property
A woman is facing 60 additional animal cruelty charges after an RCMP investigation resulted in the seizure of more than 70 animals from a Parkland County property.
On Tuesday, 65 horses and six dogs were removed from a rural property after a collaborative effort between Evansburg RCMP, RCMP Livestock Investigations, Alberta SPCA, Brand Inspectors, Sangudo Veterinary Clinic, Parkland County and Lac St. Anne County.
Three dead horses were previously found on the property.
Evansburg RCMP said Wedne -
Oilers in 60: Bloopers and Outtakes
The Edmonton Oilers were in San Jose Tuesday taking on the Sharks in hopes of closing out their four-game road trip on a high note.
That didn’t happen.
A combination of bad bounces and an uber-talented Sharks team led to the Oilers losing 7-2 to fall to 20-20-3 on the season. It was one of those games where you wanted to call in the guys from the Men in Black to wipe the memory of it from your brain.
At least Lucic scored.

Wednesday's letters: Zwozdesky held in high regard
Like many other Albertans, I am saddened to learn about the passing of Gene Zwozdesky and convey my sincere condolences and sympathy to his wife Christine and family.
I knew Gene when I worked for the Alberta NDP opposition caucus during the period 1997-2005 and had to continuously deal with the Speaker’s office on numerous legislative and procedural matters. Following my retirement, I sought his advice on other community-building issues, including the formation of Daughters Day to celebra -
Opinion: Stricter breath-testing laws give police unprecedented powers
The changes the federal government made on Dec. 18, 2018 are arguably the most radical changes since 1969, when breath-testing for alcohol on a large scale became possible and the offence of “over 80” made its debut in the Criminal Code.
For the first time, police can require a motorist, under pain of prosecution, to provide a sample of breath into a screening device without having any reason to believe the person is under the influence of alcohol or even suspect the person has consu -
Editorial: Cancelled meetings mark low point
The polarization of Alberta politics reached a new peak — or rather, a new low — last weekend.
Four meetings scheduled this month in Edmonton, Red Deer, Drayton Valley and Sundre to gather public feedback on proposed new parks along Alberta’s eastern slopes were cancelled by Environment Minister Shannon Phillips for reasons of public safety.
It’s encouraging that Albertans are so passionate about this 4,000-square kilometre parcel of stunning terrain whether they are cons -
High water levels bedevil North Saskatchewan River
The North Saskatchewan River took its sweet time to ice up this winter, resulting in the latest freeze in recent years.
The river usually freezes in late November or early December, but unseasonably warm temperatures shuffled that date back to Dec. 22, according to Environment and Parks.
Nadia Kovachis Watson, a river hydraulics and ice engineer with the province, told Postmedia freeze-up occurred close to Christmas in 2006, 2008 and 2009, but 2018 was the latest freeze in years.

Elise Stolte: Cut the rhetoric. Bighorn Country 'bomb' is a minor change to what's already protected
To hear Brazeau County Reeve Bart Guyon talk, Alberta’s Bighorn Country recreation plan is a twisted sales job about to send the provincial economy into a mud bog.
It’s a “Bighorn bomb” with “far reaching tentacles,” he said, preparing for an anti-park rally in Drayton Valley early this week.
Guyon argues the new land-use designation will create a new layer of red tape and freeze out new oil and gas investment. That it’s part of an American environmental -
David Staples: We have it in us to disrupt the dirty U.S.-led "dirty oil" campaign
It’s not easy to deliver a successful rah-rah speech to local business leaders right now but venture capitalist Ashif Mawji nonetheless hit the mark, giving a prescription that just might help us break out of tough economic times.
Pessimism prevails in Edmonton. It was a somewhat deflated crowd of 1,000 local business leaders that gathered at the Edmonton Conference Centre to hear from new Edmonton Economic Development chief executive officer Derek Hudson and others at the Impact 2019 -
Player grades: No contest as Sharks hammer 7 goals past Oilers again
Oilers 2, Sharks 7
It was clear from the early going that this wasn’t going to be Edmonton Oilers’ night. A date with the San Jose Sharks is always a tough challenge, and when pucks started bouncing flukily into the Oilers’ net at one end and off the posts at the other, well, it wasn’t going to happen.
The concerning aspect to these eyes was that the Oilers seemed to accept their fate far too willingly, offering precious little pushback in any aspect of the game and ultim -

Canada Games torch makes Edmonton stop en route to Red Deer
The Canada Games torch made its way through Edmonton on Tuesday as it travels across the country to Red Deer for the February games.
