Sacked Northlands parking cashiers have moved closer to a trial with their former employer after an application for a partial summary judgement in a wrongful dismissal and defamation case was dismissed in Court of Queen’s Bench.
Lawyers for Northlands and its former chief executive officer Tim Reid had sought the judgement arguing there was no merit to the plantiffs’ claims however Justice James Neilson found they had “not proven their case on a balance of probabilities.”

A man is facing a second-degree murder charge after a 20-year-old man was found fatally stabbed in a Westmount apartment building Saturday night.
Police were called to the apartment near 110 Avenue and 124 Street for a disturbance around 7:30 p.m.
When they arrived, officers found the 20-year-old injured victim who was later pronounced dead on scene by emergency medical responders.

Opinion: Lessons Alberta wind power can learn from oil
Energy production. Price differential. Infrastructure. Market access.
If you’re from Alberta, these words probably make you think about oil. But they should also make you think about another type of energy making headlines in Alberta: wind.
On Monday, Dec. 17, the Alberta government announced the procurement of over 700 megawatts of wind generation at a weighted average price of 3.9 cents per kilowatt hour — a very low price for electricity and further proof that Alberta has high-qua -
Holy mackerel, Edmonton Oilers have a lot of defencemen
Game Day 43: Oilers at Sharks
“What happened was, all of a sudden, we’ve got a lot of defencemen. We traded for Grebeshkov. We signed Tarnstrom. We traded for Pitkanen. We signed Souray. Then I’m thinking, ‘Holy mackerel, we’ve got a lot of guys here!’ ”Thus spake Edmonton Oilers then-GM Kevin Lowe in the fall of 2007, after he had undertaken a flurry of activity to try and fill the gaping void left by the departure of Chris Pronger one year previous. Hares seeking protein scavenge for meat, feathers: University of Alberta study
Snowshoe hares can be carnivorous creatures that don’t seem picky about the type of meat they eat.
A recent study University of Alberta study found that the hares will indulge in the meat of carcasses that include those of grouse, lynx, and even other hares.
Meat-eating in herbivores was previously known but it was surprising to learn just how often hares are scavenging for meat, said study author Michael Peers on Tuesday.
“It’s surprising in the sense that a good portion -
'This is not a human body': Police investigation turns up mannequin

A large police presence in a southwest neighbourhood Monday turned up a mannequin.
Police taped off an alleyway in the neighbourhood of Queen Alexandra between University Avenue and 78 Avenue and 107 Street and 108 Street, remaining there for several hours.
However, after inquiring about the police presence, an Edmonton Police spokesperson on Tuesday said: “This is not a human body. It is believed to be some sort of mannequin or doll.” -

Oil Spills podcast: Jekyll & Hyde Edmonton Oilers looking less like an NHL playoff team
So, what’s it going to be — the bad Edmonton Oilers we saw play the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, or the Oilers that shut down the Anaheim Ducks the very next night?
Saturday’s wretched shutout loss to the Kings showed the Oilers’ definite lack of motivation — not a playoff attitude, head coach Ken Hitchcock said after the game — while Sunday’s win over Anaheim showed the Oilers can play well when they want to.

Watch: Oil Spills: Jekyll & Hyde Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers’ western U.S. road trip in early January is the tale of two teams.

Edmonton weather: Don't lick any metal outside today
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

We will be getting sun today with a high of -13 C but that dastardly wind will keep things chilly and feeling like it’s -25. There is also a risk of frostbite out there so please make sure you’re covered up from the wind. Tonight it’s a low of -
Tuesday's letters: Anti-icing claim not reassuring
The city website continues to insist that “we do not expect to see an increase in vehicle corrosion” due to the calcium chloride it’s spraying on city streets. I do not find this claim to be reassuring.
Our detached and unheated garage features permanent pools of salty brine beneath our vehicles. We’ve had pools in the past, but neither this often nor at equally cold temperatures. How much damage is this constant salty dampness doing to everything in the building, includi -
Opinion: Reconnecting with a senior makes for the best gift
The holiday season is a time known for love, kindness and spending time with those we most love. While this truly is a joyous time of the year, it is also a time where many face feelings of isolation and loneliness.
For many seniors, these feelings of isolation and loneliness can be particularly acute. Canada’s seniors are living longer, healthier lives but limited mobility can often make it difficult for seniors to connect with their communities, families and loved ones during this time -
Keith Gerein: Alberta could use more of what Gene Zwozdesky brought to public service
On the fourth floor of the legislature, near the public entrance to the chamber, hangs a portrait of Gene Zwozdesky to recognize his time as Speaker of the legislative assembly.
Unlike the solemn portraits of most of his predecessors, Zwozdesky is depicted with a charming smile, holding open a book of parliamentary procedure and clearly enjoying an opportunity to explain some point of protocol.
After hearing the sad news of the 70-year-old’s death on the weekend, I spent some time Mon -
City lease talks with ritzy Mayfair Golf Course should be transparent: River valley advocacy group
A city lease renewal process that would ensure the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, created in 1922, continues to operate needs to be more transparent, argues a group of concerned citizens.
The club’s manager previously told Postmedia that the club pays $200,000 annually to operate on the publicly-owned land on the edge of the North Saskatchewan River valley — $35,000 is the lease payment and the rest is property taxes.
The current lease runs until 2051, but the Mayfair is in talks with -

Is it time for Connor McDavid to bare his fangs? Hmm
McDavid will get this right but don’t count on the NHL to do the same
This in from TSN’s Bob McKenzie, some wise words on the referee non-call on Connor McDavid, that saw McDavid crosschecked into the boards by Hampus Lindholm of the Anaheim Ducks without penalty.
McKenzie said this is not just a matter of protecting superstars, but of protecting all players from such pushes into the boards. “I didn’t like the hit at all. I’ve never liked the hit. And I’ve bee -

A woman who defrauded dozens of investors who were hoping to secure a little slice of heaven in the shadows of the Canadian Rockies has been sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay close to $1.3 million in restitution to her victims.
