Alex Petrovic? Brandon Manning? Caleb Jones? What are the Oilers going to do with all these d-men?
Game Day 41, Oilers vs Kings
With the acquisitions of Alex Petrovic and Brandon Manning, the emergence of Caleb Jones and the return to healthy of Kris Russell, the Edmonton Oilers blueline suddenly has a glut of players.
Of course, the real question isn’t what to do with all these players, but which of them can get the job done in the NHL, especially in a Top 4 role.
The absence of Russell and Oscar Klefbom helped the Oilers find some answers in this department, with Matt Benning failing -

Mother ordered to pay $260,000 for defamation after campaign targeting Edmonton principal
A mother who campaigned with leaflets, letters and a poster on her car falsely claiming an Edmonton school principal was abusive, racist and a criminal has been ordered to pay $260,000 in damages for defamation.
Last month, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Doreen Sulyma ordered Najmeya Sana — also known as Najmeya Sana Siddiqi — to compensate the past principal for the stress and physical and emotional repercussions she suffered as a result of the baseless allegations.

Saturday's letters: Double standard in bird deaths
So Syncrude just got fined $2.75 million because 31 blue herons died on its site (almost $89,000 per bird).
When will we see wind-energy facilities fined for the countless birds and bats that they slaughter every day with their windmills? Or will they continue to get a free pass because they are “green” energy?

Opinion: Like energy, forestry faces challenges in 2019
The debate about the future of Canada’s natural resources has dominated 2018. While our friends in the oil and gas sector have been at the centre of the discussions and protests, the challenge is being felt by all of us working in the natural resources sector — from chemistry to forestry to mining.
Why is it that Canada, a country with among the most stringent environmental, health and safety, labour, and human rights laws and regulations in the world, is facing continued pressure to -
Youth advocate report outlines key investigations into serious injuries, deaths
Alberta’s child and youth advocate examined various issues in 2017-18 ranging from challenges that sexual and gender diverse young people face in the welfare system to the causes of serious injuries and death.
In November, the office released an annual report outlining its work from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018. Here are some highlights.
By the numbers
3,103 youth in total received advocacy services.

Students become casual astronomers, physicists in Jasper Place after-school club
In one corner, two teens stared intently at laptops connected to a satellite dish propped against a classroom wall.
In the other corner, an animated group of boys discussed equations and diagrams of a cyclotron scrawled on the board.
A 3-D printer hummed busily on a bench at the front of the room.
It’s after school on a Wednesday at Jasper Place High School and 15 students are more than happy to linger for their weekly science and engineering club to fiddle with technical toys.

Increased use of pepper spray in young offender centres concerning, says advocate
A surge in the use of pepper spray to restrain young offenders is concerning, says Alberta’s child and youth advocate.
“The use of pepper spray in other jurisdictions has decreased,” said advocate Del Graff in a recent interview. “The fact is that many jurisdictions don’t use pepper spray at all, and they seem to manage.”
In February 2016, the province rolled out a policy whereby trained staff members at Alberta’s two facilities for young offen -

Watch: Bookstore owner's passion for mystery and crime stories
Kristy Ramsey, the owner of Blue Lamp Books, a mystery novel and crime bookstore in Edmonton, talks about her love and passion for mystery and crime stories.

Edmonton police officer reprimanded for leaving Safeways without paying for food
An Edmonton police officer has admitted to professional misconduct after twice walking out of grocery stores without paying for his meals.
The constable was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 after walking out of two Safeway stores — in Terra Losa and Westmount — with deli food which he had not purchased.
A loss prevention officer who stopped the officer on March 23, 2016, said he had walked out with an order of chicken tenders and a Fresca valued at about $4.55.

Families wait for city to consider cracking cap on chicken coops
The chickens have not come home to roost in the Dupuis family’s backyard.
The family applied to join the city’s urban hen program last May and spent the summer constructing a coop. But Andrea Dupuis said Friday they’re still on a waiting list, and that it will likely be quite some time before there’s room in the program.
“It’s kind of disheartening,” she said.

Keith Gerein: 19 bold, and not so bold, political predictions for 2019
Predicting the weather is hard, but it’s still a breeze compared with the difficulties involved in trying to predict the next twists and turns in Alberta’s political arena.
