Ice Castles founder Brent Christensen, who came up with the concept of ice castles and designs all of them each season, talks about his creation at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton on Thursday January 3, 2019.
“Our hope is in this instance for people to come here and forget they’re in Edmonton and really be transported to a different world where everything is unfamiliar and novel and unique,” said Brent Christensen, founder of Ice Castles. “Probably the biggest question we

'A different world': Fourth annual Ice Castles exhibit to open Friday
Step into a winter wonderland fit for an ice queen — or king — and explore the fourth annual transformation of Hawrelak Park into a frigid ice castle.
The ice castle covers about an acre and features towering icicles, frozen caves and tunnels. There are more interactive areas like crawl spaces and slides, including one that is about 20 metres long.

Notes from the Dome: MLA slams NDP 'cloak of secrecy' around sexual misconduct allegations
Alberta Party MLA Karen McPherson has slammed what she called an NDP “cloak of secrecy” around sexual misconduct allegations within its ranks.
The member for Calgary-Mackay Nose Hill sent a letter to the speaker in November, expressing concern about the allegations involving two unnamed, sitting members of the NDP government caucus. She asked him to review how the investigation into those allegations was handled.
The response she received from him this week dismisses her concerns and -

Oilers in 60: McDavid and Draisaitl? Never heard of 'em
It’s a New Year and the Edmonton Oilers are hoping a pair of new faces can help them stop the bleeding as they kicked off 2019 riding a six-game losing streak.
The Oilers allowed 29 goals against and scored just 15 over their six game skid.
*Slow clap*
So Oilers GM, and resident “genius” Peter Chiarelli, made a pair of trades to acquire defenceman Alex Petrovic and Brandon Manning in hopes of shoring up their battered blue line.

Thursday's letters: Toast New Year's at midnight
Celebrating the beginning of the New Year in Edmonton is the one day in the whole year that we are seemingly on Atlantic standard time. Who’s responsible for this nonsense?
In Alberta, the celebration with fireworks should begin at midnight like it does worldwide. Hopefully, clearer heads will prevail in future years.

Opinion: Catholic schools add diversity and choice
Recent narratives in the public realm suggest that amalgamating all schooling in Alberta into one system could create or lead to efficiencies not found in Alberta’s current education system.
These comments often dismiss the role of choice, parental rights, and the stellar results that Alberta’s public education system produces under its current structure, and attempt to use the language of efficiency to thinly veil contempt for religious rights and Catholicism.

Keith Gerein: Welcome to 2019 Alberta. Here's some New Year's resolutions our politicians may want to consider
A new year is upon us, a time of reflection, reassessment and reinvention.
Change is in the air, whether we desire it or not, which is why so many of us make resolutions to better our lives, or the world at large, even just a little.
For me, my 2019 resolutions include more exercise, more sleep, more compassion for those less fortunate, and using fewer qualifying adjectives (which will at least make my editor happy).
The first two of those may be challenging goals, considering 2019 promises to b -
Edmonton Eskimos winning when it comes to connecting with community
In a business where winning means everything, the Edmonton Eskimos aren’t afraid to push the boundaries outside of the 150-foot by 65-foot gridiron.
Inside those dimensions, the team spent 18 hours of in-game action during the 2018 regular season.
But through its 2018 Champions in the Community initiatives, the Eskimos spent 1,937 hours with 966 appearances at 214 different events throughout the city, region and northern portion of the province.
And while the team fell short of the Canadia -
Player grades: McDavid, Draisaitl lead the way as Edmonton Oilers check losing slide
Oilers 3, Coyotes 1
Edmonton Oilers finally figured out a way to stop the bleeding in their own end of the ice on Wednesday night, and — wouldn’t you know it? — finally stopped the bleeding on a major losing streak that was threatening to sewer their season. All if took was a road trip away from Edmonton, where they failed to record a standings point in five games while allowing 25 goals against.
On Wednesday in Arizona, the Oilers got goals from the usual sources — Conno -
