An eight-year-old boy is clinging to life in an Edmonton hospital after a head-on collision near Plamondon Sunday evening that killed four people including his mother and two siblings.
Elisaveta Scherbakov, 34, and two sons Alexander, 9, and Zenon, 4, were killed in the crash on Highway 858 around 7 p.m. when the Edmonton family’s SUV collided with a truck, a family member living in Plamondon confirmed Wednesday.
The SUV was travelling southbound on the highway five kilometres north o

Happy New Year, Peter Chiarelli? Top Oilers prospects could save GM's job
Todd McLellan ran out of lives as head coach of The Edmonton Oilers. GM Peter Chiarelli is close, even if team president Bob Nicholson says Chiarelli will keep his job if the Oil make the playoffs.
Edmonton has just a .500 record, with 18 wins and 18 losses. The Oilers are in the hunt for a playoff spot, but they’re also down three of their Top 5 d-men right now with Kris Russell, Oscar Klefbom and Andrej Sekera all out.
Russell’s injury doesn’t sound overly serious but Klefbom -
Boxing Day sales: The early bird gets the shoes at Edmonton International Airport outlet mall
Standing at the front of the line for Lacoste at the outlet mall by the airport, M.J. Borres chatted with her friends, waiting for the doors to open at 8 a.m.
The south Edmonton resident had arrived at the mall at 5 a.m., armed with a plan of attack — find an awesome parking spot by the entrance, hit up Nike (which opened its doors first at 6 a.m.) for shoes, head to Lacoste and Levis, then browse “every other place.”
At each turn, of course, Borres had an eye out for the deepe -
What's in a word: University of Alberta prof researches what makes a word funny
What makes a word funny?
Well if you are into statistics modelling, Chris Westbury and Geoff Hollis have an answer.
According to research by the University of Alberta academics, a funny word is short, infrequent and composed of uncommon letters.
Those letters are likely to include the vowel sound ‘oo’ and maybe a consonant like ‘y’ or ‘k’. It also has to be animacy-related and preferably one that is human, insulting, profane or related to a good time.

Wednesday's letters: Used phones can change lives
Is a new iPhone on your Christmas list this year? It’s on mine.
Smartphones let us connect with family and friends. They help us explore the world and capture memories. And for people like myself with sight loss, smartphones, with their built-in accessibility features, allow us to have a better quality of life and keep in touch with loved ones like everyone else.
I picked up a smartphone six years ago and haven’t looked back since. But almost half of CNIB clients don’t yet have -
Small town marijuana shop dedicated to staying open amid supply shortages
More days than not, the doors to Small Town Buds in Devon have had to remain locked due to a lack of cannabis stock.
It’s frustrating, says owner Chris Felgate, but there’s no way he’s closing down the store he opened with his wife Nicole Felgate.
They’re in it for the long haul.
“We love cannabis, we’re very passionate about it and there’s nothing I’d rather be doing right now than this,” he says.
Product shortages have hit the cannabis mark -
Rebranded FC Edmonton back in fabric of community
For a time, it appeared FC Edmonton was done as a professional club with the demise of the North American Soccer League.
Yet fans in the city urged the club to be part of the new Canadian Premier League (CPL) debuting this upcoming spring, and FC Edmonton listened.
It rebranded and renewed its professional relationships throughout the community, and is now full-steam ahead towards its inaugural season in the CPL.
“This club was saved because of the fans,” said FC Edmonton genera -
Opinion: How backyard Christmas 'tree-cycling' helps nature
People living in the northern hemisphere have brought trees and boughs into their homes during the winter for thousands of years. The evergreens that we decorate with during Christmas can represent a celebration of holidays and a reminder that spring will come again.
I’m a Christmas tree traditionalist, and will never give up the ancient ritual of bringing a fresh tree into our home. Each year, Canada’s 1,872 Christmas tree farms produce over three million pine, spruce and fir trees. -
Opinion: Disaster relief, rising demand will squeeze charities in 2019
We are fortunate to live in a nation where people and corporations are so generous. Community investment, helping the less fortunate and inclusion are internationally recognized hallmarks of Canadian life — and these characteristics must be nurtured.
Generosity is the underlying reason Canada is the envy of much of the world and the preferred destination of millions seeking a better life
Annually, corporate giving totals more than $4 billion, while individual donors give $14.3 billion. Soc -

Year in review: Journal sports writers' favourite stories of 2018
Edmonton Journal sports writers looked beyond playing surfaces for their personal top stories of the year.
The ongoing Mike Reilly watch
My favourite story of 2018 is every bit as applicable now as it was when it was written back in September.
It’s shaping up to be the zaniest off-season in Canadian Football League memory, what with a new collective-bargaining agreement needed and a salary cap put on coaches and other football-operations staff, not to mention a new spring league starting d -
Story of the Year No. 5: B.C. wildfires gave us a smoky summer to remember
The month of August is often the peak of the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. But this year, the emphasis was on hazy.
In our countdown of the top stories of 2018, the smoke-filled summer months finished No. 5.
Seemingly every year, smoke from nearby forest fires descends over the city, forming a hazy halo over Edmonton that makes everything smell like a campfire.
In 2016, the Fort McMurray wildfire caused several days of smoke-filled air to envelope the city, but this year was much worse. Mass -
Oil Spills podcast: Win some, lose some — Edmonton Oilers at mid-season, Part 1
Part 1 of a look back at the Edmonton Oilers’ season so far — a mid-season report of sorts as NHL teams near the halfway mark of the 2018-19 schedule.
Jim Matheson, Derek Van Diest and Craig Ellingson talk about three simmering, ongoing subjects surrounding the Oilers, including:
– the rise of Mikko Koskinen to become the starting goaltender.
– the Nov. 20 coaching change that saw Ken Hitchcock replace Todd McLellan as head coach.
– the ongoing saga of Milan Lucic, -
Making a mark through art: Sherwood Park students design skateboards reflecting youth poverty challenges
A Sherwood Park high school class is hoping to bring to light the issues surrounding young people and poverty by crafting art pieces created on unique canvasses youth can easily relate to — skateboards.
Eight students from Next Step High School are engaging with local young people facing poverty challenges with weekly visits to Edmonton’s Old Strathcona Youth Society to learn of the struggles they face.
“Our students are making relationships with youth there and also seeing pov -
Elise Stolte: Mill Woods church takes a cross off the wall to welcome Muslims, Sikhs
They took the cross off the church wall.
That’s the detail that caught my attention when I heard about the Millbourne Community Life Centre, a church that reinvented itself as a neighbourhood meeting space, open to anyone, and a drop-in centre for youth in what is sometimes a rough neighbourhood.
These days, the world can seem so polarized. To see the centre take down such a significant religious symbol to ensure Muslim and Sikh neighbours feel welcome is a beautiful gesture.
Today, the bu -
Come for the party and stay for the play: Live theatre looks at new ways to draw a crowd
It’s Dickens on steroids.
Patrons of the Citadel, who have flocked to the theatre’s annual Christmas Carol presentation by the thousands for 19 years, were met with a different sort of holiday tradition this year.
Of course, there was the show itself, seen for the last time in its present iteration (next year a spiffy new production launches). But surrounding the comparatively staid event, like a bright layer of silver wrap, were props and activities that signal a change, both at the -
