• New owner of Happy Harbor comics to keep store's spirit alive

On Tuesday Edmonton comic fans were saddened to hear the news that local comic book shop Happy Harbor Comics was closing its doors at the end of January.
The decision to close down was something co-owners Jay Bardyla and Shawna Roe had been contemplating for a while and when the announcement was made the outpouring of sadness and gratitude from the community came in droves.
But then something happened. After the closing news hit social media and mainstream media it also caught th

  • Watch: Tampa Bay comes from behind to beat Oilers 6-3

The Oilers had staked themselves 1-0 and 2-1 leads on goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Alex Chiasson, but the Tampa Bay Lightning flexed their offensive muscle and posted a convincing 6-3 rout.
“They were a little bit better than we were in the first period, but until the second goal and the third goal right after that we played a perfect second period,” said Oilers’ head coach Ken Hitchcock.  “That 13 minutes was as good as we’ve played. We did everyth

  • Player grades: First-place Tampa simply too good as Bolts zap Oilers

    Lightning 6, Oilers 3
Sometimes you lose a game because you didn’t get the bounces or the breaks. Sometimes you lose because the other team was better on the night. And sometimes you lose because the other team is better, period.
Saturday night was definitely a case of Door #3 for the Edmonton Oilers, as the high-powered Tampa Bay Lightning dropped into Rogers Place and put on a clinic of passing, shooting, and scoring, ultimately skating to a well-deserved 6-3 win over the game but overma
  • Police power to access encrypted devices a 'murky' area of law, U of A expert says.

Edmonton’s former police chief Rod Knecht has shed new light on the case of Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, the man accused of the Sept. 30, 2017 vehicle attacks in Edmonton.
He happened to do so half a world away, at a counter-terrorism conference in Australia last week.
Knecht told an Australian newspaper that Sharif had an encrypted device police weren’t able to access, and urged Australians to embrace legal changes that would make it easier for police to get into encrypted devices.

  • Alberta bus companies filling the Greyhound void, but gaps in service remain

Private bus companies have expanded and the province has stepped in with funding to fill most — but not all — service gaps left in Alberta after Greyhound ended its service across western Canada this fall.
“We’re a big province. The worst thing for a woman leaving an abusive relationship is for her to hitchhike,” said Jan Reimer, executive director of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters.
More than 80 per cent of Greyhound’s old bus network is now cov

Research is helping foster more community connections for those struggling on the margins of society.
“I think often it’s not that people don’t want to help, they just don’t know how,” said NorQuest College researcher Marlene Mulder, who led the three-year study to determine how those marginalized individuals can overcome barriers.
“Marginalized people need the same respect that non-marginalized people expect.”

  • New police chief: 'We need to jail the people we're afraid of, not the ones we're mad at'

Dale McFee, a Saskatchewan deputy minister who previously served as police chief in Prince Albert, will be sworn in as Edmonton’s 23rd chief of police on Feb. 1.
When he was announced as Edmonton’s new chief in November, he said he did not feel he was inheriting a service that’s “broken,” but it remains to be seen whether his approach to policing differs from that of his predecessor, Rod Knecht.
McFee sat down with reporters on Dec. 12 to talk about his vision for t
  • Short-staffed Edmonton Oilers defence corps in tough vs. high-powered Bolts

Game Day 36: Lightning at Oilers
Under the best of circumstances, a date against the Tampa Bay Lightning is a huge challenge for any NHL club. Alas, this season’s visit to Edmonton of the league’s best club finds the Oilers under considerably less than ideal state of affairs, especially on defence.
Despite the season-long absence of Andrej Sekera, things had otherwise been pretty stable through the first 30 games of the season. That included the first 10 of Ken Hitchcock’s time
