Jesse Puljujarvi gets the push to McDavid's flank as Hitchcock revamps Oilers' lines
With the Edmonton Oilers finally getting a full-blown opportunity to practice for the first time in nearly a month, coach Ken Hitchcock unveiled some new line combinations on Thursday morning.
Oilers lines today:
RNH-McDavid-Puljujarvi
Rieder-Draisaitl-Chiasson
Caggiula-Brodziak-Kassian
Lucic-Khaira-Rattie with Spooner and Zykov rotating in.

Wine column: Holiday drinking and dunking with Cookies By George
Dunking the right cookie into a glass of milk is undeniably fun and delicious — the rich and flavourful transformation when the cookie is perfectly soaked and then slowly savoured as it drips over the glass takes us back to our childhood. Well let’s amp it up a notch with an adult spin on dunking for the holidays.
Most wine professionals agree on the fact that pairing dry wines with desserts is difficult and rarely works. We will recommend sweeter styles of wine such as fortified, sp -
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing: Christmas carols have many singing merrily
Christmas music is an unstoppable force at this time of year, with its jingle jangle earworms, decked halls and choirs belting out holiday classics from virtually every venue.
Christmas and singing go together like eggnog and rum.
Yet Christmas carolling wasn’t always the wholesome activity it is today.
From 1647 to 1660, it was actually illegal to sing them in England. This went hand-in-hand with a general ban on the holiday itself, which the puritans under Oliver Cromwell judge -
Edmonton Oilers top line of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Alex Chiasson struggling on defence
McDavid’s rate of major mistakes on Grade A chances against has doubled & Chiasson’s quadrupled
There have been a handful of key changes since Ken Hitchcock took over as coach, namely Mikko Koskinen getting a higher percentage of starts in net, something that was already starting to happen under former coach Todd McLellan.
Hitchcock has also stuck with McLellan’s favoured formation of using Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl together on the top line, going with Alex Chiasson -
Equality or independence: Freedom Conservative Party lays out 2019 election platform
Either Alberta gets fair treatment from Ottawa or the province must seriously pursue independence, says Freedom Conservative Leader Derek Fildebrandt.
That’s the centrepiece of his party’s 2019 election platform, unveiled Thursday in Calgary.
Fildebrandt, member for Strathmore-Brooks, told Postmedia he doesn’t currently favour Alberta separating from Canada but the status quo is unacceptable.
Within one year of the provincial election, his party wants Alberta’s gover -
Police search in Red Deer nets $66k worth of cocaine, guns
Seven people are facing dozens of criminal charges after police seized cocaine, drug paraphernalia and guns from homes in Red Deer.
Police raided two homes in Red Deer’s Pines and Vanier Woods neighbourhoods Dec. 13, according to a Thursday news release from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), Alberta’s integrated police unit.
The search turned up 662 grams of cocaine valued at $66,000, scales, “score sheets” and packaging materials, the news release said. -
Overdue snowmobiler found dead near Fort McMurray
A 48-year-old man was found dead near Fort McMurray Wednesday after he went missing on a snowmobile trip.
The man was last seen the afternoon of Dec. 15, when he told a friend he was leaving on a snowmobiling trip. Three days later, on Dec. 18, police received a report that the man had gone missing.
Search and Rescue Fort McMurray, Wood Buffalo Regional Emergency Services and RCMP — including a police helicopter — were called in to try and locate the man.
They found the man’s b -
'In shock': Mother of man charged with killing two girls grapples with their violent deaths, accusations against him
The mother of the man accused of killing two baby girls in Edmonton this month is trying to come to grips with their violent deaths and the charges levelled against her son.
“I’m still in a lot of confusion, a bit of shock yet,” Connie Wolfleg said in a recent interview in Morinville. “I don’t read the paper, I don’t listen to the news — all the horrible things they’re saying about my son. But I know my son’s not like that.&rdq -
Edmonton weather: Change is in the air, bringing wind and snow
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -7.1 C with 5 km/h with calm winds.

Thursday's letters: What is U.S. plan for Meng Wanzhou?
Ms. Meng Wanzhou will, at some indeterminate date, appear before a Canadian justice to determine her right to avoid extradition to the U.S. Her offence, in the eyes of that administration, is her conduct of business with the nation of Iran.
Such acts contravene established executive sanctions. It should be noted these sanctions are not those of the United Nations nor of Canada.
Were Ms. Wanzhou extradited to the U.S. for purposes of interrogation at their famous sites at Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo -
Opinion: Spiritual care is an integral part of health care
Public reports on health care often focus on clinical and technological advances in medicine; but occasionally, we hear human stories of lives being touched by the kindness of others.
Caring relationships are at the heart of health care — care that tends to the soul and the whole person. The Christmas season, in spite of its commercial trappings and business, is an excellent time to embrace its spirit of peace and good will. Spiritual support is one way of exemplifying that spirit in healt -
'Where there's smoke, there's fire': MLA files official complaint over UCP nomination race
United Conservative MLA Wayne Anderson says he planned to meet with Elections Alberta Wednesday afternoon to discuss what he feels were potential shenanigans in the Highwood UCP nomination race.
Anderson lost the nomination to R.J. Sigurdson in October, but says his call for an investigation is not a case of sour grapes.
“I can live with the results,” Anderson told Postmedia earlier Wednesday.
“But if there’s something nefarious that had been going on … I think peo -
Longtime restaurateur Kim Franklin retires from the Highlevel Diner
Today, the following descriptors could be linked to numerous Edmonton restaurants: small, sustainable, with a focus on locally-sourced, made-from-scratch meals served in a warm and comforting environment emphasizing community.
But when the Highlevel Diner arrived 36 years ago, it was a radical concept in Edmonton, City of Steakhouses. Now, as Kim Franklin — the diner’s only original shareholder — retires, it’s easy to fear those values are at risk. But like a whole compri -

Judge hears sentencing arguments for key player in Fort McMurray drug trafficking ring
It is now up to an Edmonton judge to decide if a man described by police as a ringleader of a Fort McMurray drug trafficking network should be behind bars for two years or as long as a decade.
Patrick Felix, 38, pleaded guilty earlier to multiple drug trafficking charges after a two-year investigation in Fort McMurray by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team where police seized more than $1 million worth of drugs in June 2015, including nearly 3,000 fentanyl pills.

'Worse than the 1980s': Truckers pack the streets at pro-pipeline rally in Nisku
Hundreds of truckers rallied for Alberta’s beleaguered oil and gas industry Wednesday, forming a 22-kilometre long convoy around Nisku and signalling to the rest of Canada that the province’s resource industry needs far more help.
The truckers from across the province honked their way past supporters, many of whom waved placards that called for everything from pipeline approvals to the overhaul of Canada’s equalization formula.
“This is worse than the 1980s, dollar for do -
Jujhar Khaira of Oilers suspended two games, which is big loss for Edmonton
This just in from NHL Player Safety: “Edmonton’s Jujhar Khaira has been suspended for two games for cross-checking St. Louis’ Vince Dunn.”
My takeA surprisingly big loss for the Oilers as Khaira, 24, has been playing the best hockey of his career under Ken Hitchcock. Earlier this year I thought it would have been OK if Khaira had been traded, such was the dullness of his performance and lack of results. But he’s now flashing the potential he displayed at the AHL lev
