Community members came together Wednesday to sing songs, spread cheer and, most importantly, package and deliver “more than just a meal” to isolated Edmontonians.
Meals on Wheels fund development and communications co-ordinator Sarah McCrimmon said volunteers often stick around after delivering the meal, checking in on the client and making sure they’re OK.
“The volunteers are often the only people that the clients see in the day,” McCrimmon said.

10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Little Red Riding Hood, Zappacosta, and This is Pop!
McDades
You only have three more chances to catch The McDades as they wind up their seasonal performances at the John Walter Museum over the holiday season. Two 45-minute sets plus holiday treats in the interpretive centre of a gorgeous old 19th century home? Sign me up. The beloved local musical family have been packing them in at the museum for over 20 years, and the attendance reflects this; many of these concerts sell out quickly.
When: Until Saturday, Dec. 22. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. -
Dancers from Kiev and Edmonton bond over favourite seasonal ballet
They are about 8,000 kilometres from their home base in Kiev, Ukraine, but for dancers Tetyana Lozova and Yaroslav Tkachuk there’s nothing foreign about visiting Edmonton.
“It feels just like home,” smiles Lozova.
Every time they visit Edmonton, this little part of Ukraine seems to get bigger and bigger, says Tkachuk. “I really respect the way the Ukrainian community here does so much for their culture and history, just as strongly as people back in Ukraine, if not more s -

Cappies review: Unity 1918
By Meghan Bunn
Strathcona High School
Plagued by fear, the war of the nations became the war of the infected, battling, not with guns, but with propagandized panic. Quarantined by terror, with death as their enforcement, mask-adorned ghosts passed like ships in the night, finding unity only in isolation.
An impactful tribute in commemoration of the anniversary of the end of the First World War, McNally High School’s powerful rendition of Unity (1918) was a disturbing reminder of a Canadian -
Cappies review: Get Smart
By Damian Lachacz
Holy Trinity High School
Kidnapped hostages, a trio of Chinese assassins and a doomsday weapon. For Maxwell Smart, saving the world “and loving it” is just an ordinary day at the office. However, Millwoods Christian School’s presentation of Get Smart was anything but ordinary. Their performance had the crowd roaring with laughter from start to finish.
This spy satire was created and written by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The Emmy Award-winning TV show aired fro -
Oilers in 60: There's a conspiracy afoot
It’s all one giant conspiracy.
The Edmonton Oilers were seemingly fleeced Tuesday night as they took on the St. Louis Blues at Rogers Place. Sure, the Oilers’ powerplay was awful — going 0-5 on the night — and the Oilers were having a hard time mustering quality shots on goal, finishing with just 22 total shots on the night.
But things fell off the rails in the third period when a loose puck in the crease got jammed home by former Oiler Pat Maroon prompting two reviews &m -
Coventry Homes' Edmonton Oilers fan caves take game day to another level
It’s hockey night in Coventry country again.
With a newly bolstered starting lineup of Edmonton Oilers fan caves, Coventry Homes, the preferred builder of the Edmonton Oilers, continues to see a growing interest in its fan cave option, which is designed to take your hockey game day to a whole new level.
Joining the Coventry fan cave roster is the latest addition in Copperhaven, a new family-friendly, community-minded neighbourhood in west Spruce Grove.
This most recent fan cave, which debu -
Edmonton weather: Santa might want to layer up
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -5.8 C with 5 km/h winds out of the west, southwest contributing to a -8 windchill.
Today might be the last above zero day we get for the foreseeable future. Wind gusts of 40 km/h will be sweeping over the area today and with it bringing clouds and colder temperatures as we head into next week. Right now, forecasters are calling for a chil -
Wednesday's letters: Alberta's fiscal mess is its own doing
Re. “Equalization system rigged against Alberta,” Opinion, Dec. 14
The implication in Danielle Smith’s op-ed is that Alberta’s wealth has been transferred to enrich Quebec through equalization payments. That is not true.
Equalization is a federal government program that is funded from federal corporate and personal income taxes. In 1929, Alberta was given exclusive jurisdiction over our resources so wherever the hundreds of billions of our resource wealth went, it did so -
David Staples: Unpopular Sohi keeps pushing what he sees as right pipeline plan
Edmonton’s Amarjeet Sohi is the least popular federal cabinet minister in Canada. This comes as no surprise since he’s a Trudeau Liberal in an Alberta seething mad at all things Trudeau and all things federal Liberal.
Just 17 per cent of Canadians polled by Angus Reid think Sohi is doing a good job, while 53 per cent says he’s done a bad job, putting him at -36 for approval plus/minus, lower than even Ahmed Hussen, who heads up the botched federal immigration file but is only a -

Player grades: Edmonton Oilers lay rotten egg on home ice, fall listlessly to Blues
Blues 4, Oilers 1
Awful hockey game down at Rogers Place on Tuesday night, as the Edmonton Oilers came up far, far short in falling 4-1 to St. Louis Blues. The entertainment value of this game was close to nil as St. Louis checked diligently and frustrated would-be Edmonton shooters before they got anywhere close to the net. They were aided and abetted by an utterly impotent Oilers powerplay that had few ideas and even less execution.
Some might point to the phantom goal awarded to the visitors -

The Edmonton Oilers, playing their 14th game over the past 25 days, lost their first home game under head coach Ken Hitchcock on Tuesday to the St. Louis Blues. They had won six games in a row at Rogers Place before the 4-1 loss.
It was their second straight defeat, two days after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Canucks in Vancouver.
“The game was 1-1 after two periods, which was where we wanted it, but we were the first team to crack,” said Hitchcock. “We lost the game in the s -
Press Gallery interview: Amarjeet Sohi talks pipelines, oil prices and being Canada's most unpopular cabinet minister
The Press Gallery’s final episode of 2018 features a chat with a man who is under fire for the struggles of Alberta’s energy industry: Amarjeet Sohi.

Unclaimed $68,000 Oilers 50/50 prize carried over to Saturday's game
Sometimes, just sometimes, the number of goals on the scoreboard at Rogers Place play secondary to a larger prize.
That will surely be the case on Saturday when an unclaimed 50/50 prize of more than $68,000 will be carried over when the Edmonton Oilers take on the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 50/50 was carried over from Nov. 29 when the Oilers played the Los Angeles Kings.
The last time there was a 50/50 rollover was on Oct. 30 when the Oilers played host to the Minnesota Wild. The 50/50 th -
Edmonton triples commercial real estate investment in 2018
Industrial real estate investment in Edmonton ramped up in 2018, already tripling 2017 numbers before the end of the fiscal year, according to data released by CBRE Limited.
Alberta commercial real estate, especially in the industrial sector, continued to gain momentum. In 2018’s third business quarter, Edmonton surpassed investment totals for all of 2017 by recording $3.3 billion. Calgary hit $3.8 billion in the third quarter.
Edmonton and Calgary’s numbers were also bolstered by Bl -

'When Alberta hurts, so does Canada': Energy sector gets $1.6-billion boost from Ottawa
Canada’s energy industry is getting a $1.6-billion boost from Ottawa as the sector continues to grapple with a crushing oil differential, but Premier Rachel Notley says it’s “absolutely not” what Alberta asked for.
