New coach, new linemates, new role, but no end in sight for Milan Lucic's excruciating scoring drought
Game 35: Blues at Oilers
It’s been almost a full year now since Milan Lucic was a productive NHL scorer. The dividing line was as sharp as can be, right at Christmas 2017. Last December 23rd — a year ago this week — Lucic scored a goal to help his Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 win over the Habs. That sent the Oil into the holiday break on a four-game winning streak that raised their season record to 17-17-2, right in the playoff hunt. Lucic was personally riding very respectable sta -

TSN's Gord Miller: "The referees aren’t deliberately ignoring Connor McDavid"
This in from hockey broadcaster Gord Miller of TSN, his criticism of Edmonton Oilers coach Ken Hitchcock for lashing out that refs fail to call obvious infractions against Connor McDavid.
Miller started off by referencing how former Vancouver Canucks GM Brian Burke would stand up for the Sedins: “Brian Burke: ‘Sedin is not Swedish for punch me in the head or put me in a headlock.’ I mean, stop it! You know what I’d love to hear? I’d love to hear this (kind of c -
Chinatown Dining Week returns in January with bubbling hot pots and vegan favourites

Organized by a small group of volunteers, the week is expanding from nine to 11 days and showcases eight restaurants (up from five in January, 2018). The goal is to promote some of the city’s hidden gems, including several Chinese eateries, but also other styles of dining.

Ayla Brook and the Sound Men
One of the most comforting sounds in our city, Brook and his crew write tight, beautiful country/folk/blues songs then play them wearing a lot of plaid. Bearded and cheerful, Brook has a lovely Gene Wilder vibe, and the man band won Edmonton Music Awards Roots/Folk Recording of the Year this June.
Treat yourself and come see why. Oh, and the mighty awesome Nadine Kellman and the Black Wonders open the show, just to de-sausage the event a little.

Unclaimed $68,000 Oilers 50/50 prize carried over to Dec. 22 game
Sometimes, just sometimes, the number of goals on the scoreboard at Rogers Place play secondary to a larger prize.
That will surely be the case on Dec. 22 when an unclaimed 50/50 prize of more than $68,000 will be carried over when the Edmonton Oilers take on the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 50/50 was carried over from Nov. 29 when the Oilers played the Los Angeles Kings.
The last time there was a 50/50 rollover was on Oct. 30 when the Oilers played host to the Minnesota Wild. The 50/50 tha -
Edmonton Oilers most improved player? Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Who is the most improved Edmonton Oilers player this year? Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
When it comes to rating hockey players I look at what they do to help create scoring chances on the attack, then compare that to the mistakes they make on scoring chances against.
I’ve been measuring this at The Cult of Hockey since 2010-11 and have come in recent years to focus exclusively on Grade A chances, the most dangerous of scoring opportunities, shots on net from the inner slot. For the last two years -
'Tears of joy': Woman who signed to her dad at Three Days Grace concert appreciates support

Tuesday's letters: Khadr deserves a pat on back
My sense for justice in Omar Khadr’s difficult situation is once more being strained. This young man, now 32 years old, has seen the best and worst of people, governments, courts, prisons, militaries and war. Convicted (under questionable circumstances) for the murder of a U.S. soldier when he was only 15, the next half of his life is almost as devastating as the first half.
Yes, he was granted an apology by the Canadian government, plus a good sum of money because our government had -
Opinion: Time for Catholic Church to fund its own schools in Alberta
This month we learned about a Calgary principal who was pushed out of the largest Catholic school district in the province because of her sexual orientation. We also learned about the fear many vulnerable Catholic students in Edmonton and Calgary face in a culture of systemic discrimination.
Finally, Albertans are now questioning the enormous $2-billion annual contribution of Alberta taxpayers to subsidize the religious inculcation of students in Catholic schools — and the discriminatory h -

Scientists from the University of Alberta have discovered a soil component that could help reduce the spread of chronic wasting disease.

Watch: Edmonton Oilers coach 'considers referees just to be wallpaper'
Edmonton Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock criticizes NHL referees after team practice in Edmonton on Monday.
“I’ve always considered referees just to be wallpaper,” said Hitchcock.

Edmonton's Food Bank calls on people’s generosity to meet holiday goals
With a week until Christmas, officials at Edmonton’s Food Bank said they’re less than halfway to their food and monetary goals this holiday season.
The food bank’s goals for this year included 350,000 kilograms of food and $1.8 million, and they’re currently at just under 202,000 kilograms of food.
