Education Minister David Eggen’s office has asked Alberta’s 17 Catholic school boards to send him the terms of their employment agreements after teachers said they had to sign clauses pledging to live a “Catholic lifestyle.”
Eggen told reporters at an Edmonton school Friday that stories of Calgary Catholic teachers who claim they were told to tattle on their coworkers who were violating a “Catholicity clause” and other tales of teachers who felt insecure

'A city for the next generation': City council signs off on tax hike, billions in spending
City council approved an annual property tax increase of 2.6 per cent for the next four years Friday, along with about $4.8 billion on projects that Mayor Don Iveson says will build a city where people actually want to live.
That means the typical homeowner will pay an extra $65 more on their property tax bill in 2019. The city uses a property worth $397,000 as its metric.
All together, that means the raise will be slightly higher than what administration originally pitched to council as the tax -
Will Edmonton Oilers have enough in the tank to ground the Flyers tonight?
Game Day 33: Flyers at Oilers
Remember that one time right after Ken Hitchcock took over, that the Edmonton Oilers actually had an extra off-day between games so that they could schedule a full blooded practice? It was between Games 1 and 2 in the Hitchcock Era, a funky road trip to California that was spread over six days. Since then, the club’s schedule has taken on a metronomic regularity: game day, off day, game day, off day, rinse, repeat. Check it out (home games shown in bold):

Dining out: Jang proves a player on booming restaurant scene
Edmonton’s dining scene can be hard to keep up with. All over the city, and especially downtown, new spots seem to open every few weeks, each trying to carve out a niche of their own in a city that has rapidly — and deservingly — become a foodie destination.
The other day, as I strolled down Jasper Ave. I stopped and did a double take at Jang, a new Korean-Japanese fusion spot that seemed to spring up out of nowhere. Chef Jamie Jang has brought his eponymous take on Japanese an -
Rapper The Game finds new Edmonton venue for January gig
American rapper The Game has found a new venue for his Edmonton gig after cancelling his scheduled January performance at The Ranch Roadhouse in protest of the venue’s treatment of a man who was kicked out of the nightclub and who was later found dead.
Last week the California-based artist took to social media to explain his decision after fans told him of the story of Mohamed Abdi, who was asked to leave the south-side bar Nov. 16.
Abdi’s body was found Nov. 18 in the area of 103 St -
It's a festival of trees, and tiffs, as Christmas arrives at the Roxy
Lucy and Algar are in love. And it’s Christmas! The rest should be easy, right?
In Oh! Christmas Tree, Edmonton playwright Conni Massing’s one-act at the Roxy on Gateway, a classic relationship conundrum is festering under the boughs as a couple begins their life together.
Lucy (Lora Brovold) and Algar (Collin Doyle) have just moved in together, and are soon to be married. Lucy’s mother, who is devoted to her church, wants the marriage bans to be read on Christmas Eve, but -

Is this Ken Hitchcock's secret to success? "I believe in the rhythm and two guys."
What magic is Hitchcock using to pull out wins in close games?
Under Todd McLellan, the Edmonton Oilers had nine wins in 20 games
Under Ken Hitchcock, the Oilers have eight wins in 12 games.
Yet the Oilers are creating fewer Grade A scoring chances under Hitchcock and giving up more Grade A chances than the team did under McLellan.
Under McLellan, the Oilers created 11.1 Grade A scoring chances per game and gave up just 8.5 per game, for a +2.6 scoring chances differential. Yet they scored just -

Oilers in 60: Oilers pick up a p-p-p-p-point!
The Edmonton Oilers were in Winnipeg Thursday taking on the high flying Jets hoping to extend their four-game winning streak but unfortunately they came up just short.
The Spoonman (Ryan Spooner) opened up the scoring in the first period for the Oilers but it was the Jets who turned on the jets (get it?) after scoring three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead in the second period.
Now typically, this has been a moment when the Oilers of old might fold up tent and pack it in for the day. But the Hi -

Memphis is calling for King's inner blues voice
When the Edmonton Blues Society held the final round of its annual Memphis Bound Blues Challenge in mid-October the competition for best band was especially close. Samantha King and her YEG Trio won the audience over in the end with musical expertise and King’s powerhouse vocals. The judges seemed to agree (I know. I was one of them).
You can hear that voice again Sunday afternoon when King and her trio (Marc Beaudin, Jim Guiboche and Sandro Dominelli) play another fundraiser to help -
Friday's letters: How to fix boring NHL games
The reason that NHL hockey is so boring is that it is played almost entirely on the perimeter of the ice. It’s hard to get excited by behind-the-net and corner play.
This tedious peripheral play is largely a result of players that are bigger, faster, and more disciplined. The players of today have literally outgrown the NHL rink. Consequently, play gets clogged up and bogged down in the corners and behind the net.
The solution is to provide more room on the ice. The NHL should either incre -
Danielle Smith: Canada's on notice Albertans have had enough
The last time I wrote for a newspaper, Alberta separatism was at an all-time high. I guess it’s fitting that more than 10 years later I’m returning to writing a column when separatist sentiments may be even higher.
A bit of history: Back in August 2005 the Western Standard commissioned a poll asking the question, do you agree or disagree that Western Canadians should begin to explore the idea of forming their own country? Remarkably, 43 per cent of Albertans agreed, with relatively h -
Wine column: A dozen bottles to keep on hand for impromptu holiday demands
It’s time to stock up on value wines that are ideal for hostess gifts and impromptu gatherings with friends and family. These are the wines we don’t mind sharing, while also protecting the “good stuff.”
But wouldn’t it be nice if those value wines were not only inexpensive — but also interesting and delicious at that party-wine price point? The under-$20 sector of wines is where we find most bulk products that fit into the genre of manipulated, homogenous, bor -

Fitness column: Embrace change at all fitness levels to fight exercise frustration
Motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said that fortunes can turn with the single act of eating an apple.
Pretty simple, really. Tomorrow, instead of downing your daily doughnut, eat an apple. On Day 2, repeat the substitution. Keep going. Before you know it, you’ve broken a destructive pattern and created a healthy new habit.
Now that you’ve flexed your persistence muscles, add something a little tougher to your repertoire, like exercise.
Life is all about course correction. It would b -
Elise Stolte: King's University got out of personal lives. Catholic schools should follow suit
It’s a school, not a church.
With that argument, a small private Edmonton university — once known as the place that fired a gay lab instructor — officially ended a painful chapter in its history.
The King’s University board of governors unanimously endorsed a statement of inclusion this fall, with one abstention. The statement deliberately stays away from a definition of marriage and ensures students, staff and faculty of all sexual orientations “equal access a -
David Staples: Yes, your eyes really can tell us you're stoned (or drunk or super tired)
One great fear of legalized marijuana was the spectre of more cannabis-impaired workers on the job and drivers on the road, but cracking down on this may soon be as fast and easy as having a suspect stare at an eye scan app on a cell phone.
An Edmonton company, SafetyScan Technologies, is marketing and developing a new way to check people for heavy fatigue or marijuana and alcohol impairment.
The company’s current desktop unit scans eye movement, the measurements showing if a worker i -

Cult of Hockey player grades: Edmonton Oilers scratch out a point, come within an inch of 2 in a 5-4 OT loss to Winnipeg
Could-have? Absolutely, a Connor McDavid post in overtime is all that separated the Oilers from 2 points in Winnipeg Thursday night.
Should-have? No, you can’t really argue that the Edmonton Oilers were the better team on the evening. So while I don’t think they were necessarily lucky to get one point, I do not think they deserved any more than that. After-all, Winnipeg was clearly the superior club in the 3rd Period, out-shooting Edmonton 17-2 and out-attempting them 41-5. Yes, that -
