Alberta is putting out feelers to the private sector to see if there’s any interest in building a new oil refinery in the province.
It’s the latest in an series of moves announced by Premier Rachel Notley to help combat the ongoing oil price crisis.
Notley’s Tuesday announcement in Edmonton was light on details — there are no goals yet when it comes to job creation numbers, costs or how the government would even support construction.

Mac's store clerk killer Laylin Delorme handed two life sentences
A 50-year parole ineligibility period on top of a life sentence for the man found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two Mac’s employees in 2015 would have been unduly harsh and extinguished any hope for his rehabilitation, a Court of Queen’s Bench Justice said Tuesday.
Laylin Delorme, 27, had faced the potential of being ineligible for parole for a half-century if the court had followed the recommendations of Crown prosecutor John Wa -

Cult of Hockey Game Day #31:Edmonton Oilers (16-12-2, 34 pts) vs. Colorado Avalanche (17-8-5, 39 pts)
The Edmonton Oilers have some important decisions to make.
The club is not only playing well defensively, stringing some wins together and staying with the pack in the Western Conference playoff race. But they also have a few injured bodies healed up and about to return. That’s a nice bonus.
But all 3 looming transactions will require not just a lineup shuffle but significant roster moves. -

Tuesday's letters: Nova Scotia needs Alberta's oil money
Re. “A new message for bumper stickers, Letters, Dec. 8
The writer suggests Alberta is the site of “ecological devastation.” Hardly. Has he ever been north of Edmonton, where there is pristine wilderness? Or south, for that matter, writing as he is from Nova Scotia, where my Bluenoser neighbour says ten bucks an hour is a good wage.
The writer says our oil and gas industry is non-sustainable, and responsible for one-tenth of Canada’s carbon footprint. Maybe so, but -

Andrew Ference goes nuclear, rips terrible practice habits, party atmosphere of 2013-15 Edmonton Oilers
Andrew Ference has again ripped into the party atmosphere and lack of work ethic of the 2013-15 Edmonton Oilers.
This time Ference was speaking to Elliotte Friedman on the excellent 31 Thoughts podcast, and addressed why things went poorly with the Oilers at that time.

Player grades, Games 21-30: One new coach, two hot goalies spark turnaround in Edmonton Oilers' defensive game
As fate had it, the Edmonton Oilers and Todd McLellan parted company after Game #20 of the 2018-19 season, just as the second 10-game segment of the season had wrapped up. This meant a clean break for purposes of our regular segment reviews here at the Cult of Hockey. The second segment was all McLellan, the third all Ken Hitchcock.

New drunk driving test allows police to administer breathalyzers without reasonable suspicion
