Chartier chef Steve Brochu shares mother love for a Christmas fundraiser
There are a lot of special features at Chartier in Beaumont, but one of them is the house-made bread.
Crafted by chef Steve Brochu, the daily-fresh creation (available for sale even if you don’t eat at the restaurant) has been a Chartier staple for the last three years, ever since Brochu took a class on sourdough baking at the San Francisco Institute of Baking.
The bread is created from a sourdough starter that Brochu and his staff carefully nurture. Now, you can take a piece of that -
Deadpool defends Alberta band Nickelback
Alberta’s most famous rockers get a little comic book love courtesy another Canadian star.
In the latest trailer for the upcoming film Once Upon a Deadpool, a kidnapped Fred Savage calls Nickleback “Overproduced, formulaic ear garbage,” and Deadpool (played by Canadian star Ryan Reynolds) has had enough of the Nickelback hate.
Without spoiling too much, Mr. Pool rattles off quite a list of achievements for the band from Hanna, Alta.

Notes from the Dome: An LNG investment team, acknowledging human rights
Alberta is creating a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Investment Team to work on securing investment on export projects that will increase the value of provincial natural gas resources.
It’s part of Alberta’s broader oil and gas strategy, which includes aggressively expanding energy upgrading opportunities as the government takes short-term action to address the oil price differential crisis.
Monday’s announcement responds to a key recommendation of Alberta’s Natural Gas Advi -
Three to See Tuesday: Tenacious D and your pet on Santa's knee
Tenacious D: For those who like a greasy filling of ironic humour in their heavy metal, Tenacious D — comedian Jack Black and Kyle Gass — is about the best place to go since GWAR’s Oderous Urungus left this fetid planet.
Started as a lark, the duo firmly planted their hooves in the ground back in the mid ’90s, going on to win the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2015 for The Last in Line.

Oilers in 60: Flames lose! The two sweetest words in the English language
When the Edmonton Oilers play the Calgary Flames there’s always bound to be fireworks.
Except for last night.
Sure there was a fight, and a couple skirmishes after the whistles but aside from a first period goal by Connor McDavid not much else happened. It was a quiet game by Battle of Alberta standards but something tells me head coach Ken Hitchcock wouldn’t have it any other way.

Elise Stolte: 'Budget bingo' frustrates council. So what's a better way?
“Budget bingo” is what Coun. Michael Walters called city council’s budget debate after a fluke resulted in key affordable housing efforts landing at the bottom of the list.
It feels like a high-stakes game show.
City officials spend years analyzing what should be in or out. Then council comes in, makes a list of pet projects and priorities that are unfunded to reconsider. That’s what they debate as the clock ticks down to Christmas.
In past years, councillors felt funding -
Edmonton Catholic teachers required to sign contracts agreeing to Catholic 'lifestyles'
A requirement for Edmonton Catholic school teachers to sign a clause in their employment contracts with the school district where they pledge to maintain Catholic values breeds fear and uncertainty, several LGBTQ teachers say.

Cult of Hockey Player Grades: Edmonton Oilers grind out a hard-earned, 1-0 win over Calgary in BOA re-match
The Edmonton Oilers opened the scoring in this the 2nd edition of the Battle of Alberta this season, survived a wobbly middle frame, but then absolutely locked it down the rest of the way. In fact the Oilers liited a red-hot offensive Calgary Flames club to just 4 shots in the 3rd, en route to a 1-0 triumph on home ice.
Had the Oilers capitalized on even one of its 5 power players, it would not have come down to the final few nail-biting seconds. The man advantage was all smoke and no fire -

An Edmonton tradition: Candy Cane Lane resident looks back at 30 years of bright lights and spreading joy
When Ted Gardiner and Kate Jenvey moved into their Crestwood neighbourhood home in 1989, they were unaware a wave of holiday spirit was about to change their lives.
The couple moved from Vancouver to a house located where 148 and 147 Streets meet at 98 Avenue, not knowing anything about Candy Cane Lane.
“When it started the season of 1989, we had two strings of lights on,” Gardiner said Sunday. “It wasn’t until we heard rumbling out front and saw wall to wall cars that al -
