Firefighters in Alberta Beach helped save Christmas for the tiny hamlet when they managed to prevent the post office from burning to the ground early Wednesday morning.
North West Fire Rescue-Onoway arrived at the 47 Street building just after 2:20 a.m. to find smoke coming from the roof vents. The fire was contained by 2:45 a.m., fire Chief David Ives said in a news release.
Letters, packages and gifts were salvaged and the building remains intact. It did, however, suffer significant smoke dama

Bloom Cookie expands from mere markets to mortar and bricks
Oh Edmonton, sweet city of baked goods! Thank you for the new Bloom Cookie shop, yet another addition to our fragrant fresh cookie scene.
If you have spent time at the City Market or St. Albert farmers market, you’ll probably have run into Ashley Benson and her husband, Andrew. For the past six years, Ashley has been creating delicious, dairy and egg-free wares for sale at markets and in a few, select coffee shops and restaurants. Now, Bloom has expanded into an attractive new, space at 10 -
Province hands out notices to companies forced to cut oil production
The province is in the process of notifying the 25 companies that will have to make production cuts to reduce the oil differential, says Alberta’s energy minister.
“Right now we’re working with each individual company,” said Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd on Wednesday. “There wasn’t agreement before but I think companies realize these are extraordinary times.”
Premier Rachel Notley announced Sunday that Alberta would slash oil production temporarily by 8.7 p -
Prab Gill stands by comments slamming UCP, won't confirm he's joining new party
Calgary-Greenway Independent MLA Prab Gill is tight-lipped over rumours he will join the Freedom Conservative Party.
When asked on his way into the legislature Wednesday, Gill repeatedly said “no comment,” before adding he has to consult with his constituents before he makes any decisions.
He said he has not yet organized any town hall meetings in his riding.
Gill took the unusual step of raising a point of privilege in the Alberta legislature Tuesday, saying he wanted to clear his n -
Edmonton Oilers' over-reliance on a handful of goal scorers an unnerving trend in 2018-19
Game Day 28: Oilers at Blues
Not to say that the Edmonton Oilers have struggled to score, but their provincial rival Calgary Flames scored as many goals (9) in a single game last night as the Oilers have tallied over their last five contests combined.
Indeed, lack of offence is threatening to become the story of the season for the northern Alberta club, this despite the presence of two time scoring champion Connor McDavid. (And at least today we can talk about the presence of #97 rather than his -
Edmonton group home worker charged with sexually assaulting child in care
An Edmonton group home worker has been charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old who was in his care.
On Wednesday, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) announced charges including sexual exploitation, sexual assault and making child pornography against a 40-year-old Edmonton man.
The man was arrested Nov. 2 after an investigation by ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit. Police believe there may be other victims.
Local police first learned of the man -
Stantec pitches digital signs to light up western Canada's tallest tower
The city’s tallest tower will project corporate advertising from 69-storeys up if a rezoning proposal to allow digital signs on the building’s exterior is approved.
A pitch to light up the outside of the new Stantec Tower has been submitted to the city, and the public are invited to discuss the plan at a drop-in session that will be held in the tower’s lobby from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday. The amendment the company wants would change the overall lighting scheme of the ice di -
'Too soon to tell': Investigators looking into possible arson at Zar Zor restaurant fire
A fire stemming from a north-central restaurant Wednesday morning is under investigation for the possibility of arson.
Six crews responded to the fire call at 8:13 a.m. in a strip mall at 121 Avenue and 90 Street, fire rescue services spokeswoman Maya Filipovic said in a statement.
They arrived within five minutes to find a working fire at the Zar Zor Restaurant, Filipovic said. The restaurant specializes in Mesopotamian cuisine.
People in adjoining businesses in the strip mall, including a dayc -
The unforgettable story of an elephant, and her home, on stage at Workshop West
One benefit to being an internationally recognized theatre town is that Edmonton is home to talented artists who know River City inside out.
So it is with the award-winning Conni Massing, the playwright behind Matara, a 90-minute one-act running at Workshop West’s Backstage Theatre until Sunday. Massing’s play, inspired by Lucy, the long-debated Asian pachyderm at the Valley Zoo, presents a narrative rooted in Edmonton’s natural environment — its smelly spring run-off, it -
By the time Seattle in NHL, Edmonton Oilers roster will be transformed by youth
Evan Bouchard, Tyler Benson, Cameron Hebig, Ryan McLeod, Kirill Maksimov, Caleb Jones, Joe Gambardella, Joel Persson and Shane Starret.
Basic goals, assists and save percentage stats only tell us so much, but they tell us quite a lot, and they’re giving mighty good signals about a number of Edmonton Oilers prospects.
Indeed, by the time Seattle enters the NHL for the 2021-22 season, this group of players will have transformed the roster of the NHL Oilers.
The focus of right now is Milan Lu -
Elise Stolte: Edmonton's transit stations are dead, empty, soulless places. An extra security guard won't change that.
I hate our transit stations.
I hate how cold and lonely they feel — islands of concrete cut off from anything that makes living in a city worthwhile.
Grocery stores, coffee shops and dry cleaning services might be just across the street or parking lot, but that feels miles away in the biting cold wind.
No wonder these spaces feel unsafe.
Council is spending $20 million to increase security, putting a private security contractor at every major station, upgrading lights and adding mirrors to -
Hold my beer: Oil Kings forward makes sick trick shot from Rogers Place bleachers
So you think you can do this?
Not many can, but Edmonton Oil Kings forward David Kope made it look easy. In a video posted to social media Tuesday evening marking ‘World Trick Shot Day’ Kope showed off some pretty slick skills by firing a puck from the upper deck of Rogers Place all the way down to the ice and into the back of the net. *slow clap*
In honour of #WorldTrickShotDay, here is @david_kope18 potting one from the upper deck at @RogersPlace! #allhail pic.twitter.com/23cI -
Edmonton weather: An ode to windchill … how I loathe thee
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -9.7 C with 10 km/h winds out of the west contributing to a -15 windchill.
There’s nothing worse in winter than windchill. I can put up with the snow — heck the snow is the best dang part of winter. And I can put on extra layers to deal with the cold. But nothing stops the wind from cutting through each and every layer and chil -
Wednesday's letters: City's snow response impresses
I actually want to congratulate the City of Edmonton — particularly the bus drivers — for managing the deluge of snow so efficiently.
I have recently moved here from B.C., so have not previously witnessed a city that can mobilize like this during a weather event. It really is impressive.
Cynthia Friedman, Edmonton
No time-change impact on Oilers

Opinion: The sports psychology behind 'grit'
Grit has multiple meanings, including grainy and abrasive. That’s the prevailing hockey definition, typically referencing “playing with an edge.”
But in psychological terms, grit means something else. It means passion and perseverance, and it predicts achievement and success in life and sport over and above things like intelligence and ability. In a psychologically gritty sense, passion refers to focused goal-directed behaviour over long periods of time; perseverance, to unwave -
Wildlife: Judas Priest, Black Thunder and the nervous system of a cat
In what’s surely the happiest flaming arrow to shoot from the gilded realm of heavy metal lately, Judas Priest is finally returning to Edmonton Tuesday, June 11, at Rogers Place.
Proper bangers will debate which living metal act stands screaming at the top of Bald Mountain with that big demon, but Rob Halford feels like the perfect contender in these revolutionary times, having been bold enough to openly declare he was gay exactly 20 years ago now. Not to mention he can out-sing and certai -

Reporter Emma Graney visited China to explore the country’s growing AI expertise and what Canada needs to do to compete. Her reporting was supported with a fellowship from the Asia Pacific Foundation. This is the final instalment of a three-part series.

David Staples: New tech plus old business model turn rare veggies into hot biz startup
Trusted Freshness, a new Edmonton greenhouse vegetable producer, is charging ahead because of a major shortage at grocery stores in rare vegetables, the increasing mastery of greenhouse tech, and a new spin on the old business franchising model.
“We can grow massive amounts of produce and we can grow pretty much anything, from weed to wheat,” says Trusted Freshness director Doug Kirillo. “What we want to grow is crops that are heavily sought after but no inventories.”

10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Joel Plaskett, Zoominescence and Rupi Kaur
Double the Plasketts
… double the fun, as Joel Plaskett and his pop Bill come to town for another concert supporting their 2017 collaboration, Solidarity. The father-son duo have picked up some nice reviews for their first album, which sees the elder Plaskett infusing his son’s indie-rock tendencies with a dash of Celtic flavouring. Opening are Peterborough’s fuzz-folk duo The Mayhemingways.
