A man who narrowly avoided striking an RCMP cruiser is dead after his truck struck a power pole outside Sylvan Lake early Saturday morning.
An RCMP officer was patrolling in the Sylvan Lake area at about 4:30 a.m., trying to locate a vehicle that had been involved in a crime in Red Deer.
While driving on Highway 11a, the officer passed a westbound F-350 truck that was driving without headlights and swerving over the centre line.
A Saturday news release said the officer narrowly avoided being str

Has Ken Hitchcock succeeded in sticking to his timeline for turning around Edmonton Oilers?
Game Day 26 Oilers vs Vegas
High praise for Hitchock from Tyler Seguin, star attacker on his former team
Twelve days ago when Ken Hitchcock was hired by the Edmonton Oilers, he was blunt in what was wrong with the team and how long it would take him to fix things.
““I know what is wrong, but it’s not going to get fixed overnight… If we expect to win hockey games we’re not going to do it on talent, we have to develop an atmosphere where we’re 100% locked in pl -
Carb loading: Edmonton-area science teachers go back to school for lessons on carbohydrates
High school teachers were on the other side of the classroom at the University of Alberta on Friday with the chance to play with the research on carbohydrates being done in their own backyard.
About 40 Edmonton-area teachers took part in the daylong program offering 42 hands-on activities and lessons created by local teachers and researchers on glycomics, the study of carbohydrates in humans.
The workshop was hosted by GlycoNet, a Canadian research network focused on supporting the study and tea -
Saturday's letters: Build a pipeline to Prince Rupert
Premier Notley is using a bit of overkill in proposing to buy 80 locomotives and 7,000 oil cars to ship oil.
Alberta would still be faced with competition from cheap U.S. oil. We need to tap the Far East market and in 2015, I advocated that the federal government approve a pipeline to Prince Rupert using the CN and Yellowhead right of way which would eliminate any legal dispute with native bands.
Pipelines are not only safer than rail but you don’t have the expensive empty back-haul cost t -
Edmonton weather: Fog advisory this morning, up to 5 cm of snow expected
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Saturday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station that measured -2.9 C with 10 km/h winds out of the east, northeast contributing to a -7 windchill.
It’s going to be all sorts of fun today. Fog in the morning followed by winds and snow all day. Forecasters are calling for 5 cm of the white stuff today and tonight with the snow ending later tomorrow afternoon. Sounds like a great day to be huddled -

Wine column: Charcuterie wines at Bar Bricco bring flavours of Italy to Edmonton
If you walk into a spuntini bar in Italy, you will likely have a glass of wine along with some traditional cured meats and cheeses or as the phase says: when in Rome … carne e formaggio (sounds musical and delicious — even when I try to pronounce it). The next best thing would be to recreate these flavours, either at home or head to one of my favourite bars in Edmonton, Bar Bricco at 10347 Jasper Avenue.
The decor and atmosphere will whisk you off to Italy (figuratively, of co -
Restaurant review: Uncle Ed's restaurant offers feast of Ukrainian delights
Ukrainian food has such a long and entrenched history in Edmonton, it can hardly be considered ethnic cuisine anymore. Perogies and cabbage rolls are about as exotic in these parts as green onion cakes and spring rolls. Yet while there are countless restaurants featuring the many varieties of Asian food, there are few local spots that celebrate the Ukrainian staples we’ve come to know and love.
Uncle Ed’s is one such place — a veritable mecca of all things Ukrainian, from borsc -

Body found in rural Strathcona County identified, ruled homicide
The RCMP major crimes division say a man found dead at a rural property in Strathcona County Thursday was a victim of homicide.
Following an autopsy by the chief medical officer’s office in Edmonton Friday, police identified the dead man as 25-year-old Gursumeet Singh Brar of Sherwood Park.
The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the RCMP forensic identification section and Strathcona County general investigations section, said RCMP Cpl. Chris Warren.

ASIRT investigating after man found dead in Edmonton police cells
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after a 23-year-old man was found dead in an Edmonton police holding cell at approximately 7:40 a.m. Friday, the Edmonton Police Service said.
A paramedic on duty, along with other staff, administered first aid until emergency medical services arrived after the man was found unresponsive during a routine check. The man was pronounced dead in hospital at 2:05 p.m., Friday, said police spokeswoman Cheryl Sheppard.

Keith Gerein: NDP's rosy fiscal update at odds with Alberta's worsening oil crisis
Most journalists hate covering government fiscal updates.
They’re usually boring, full of intimidating numbers, and require listening to provincial economists wearily explain complicated concepts to reporters who consider math a sin.
For me, the updates are aggravating because they serve as little more than tedious pieces of historical fiction.
Take the NDP government’s most recent quarterly report, delivered Friday by Finance Minister Joe Ceci.
On paper, Alberta’s finances are -
'Nothing short of scandalous': Edmonton police dismiss officer who harassed co-worker
Edmonton police have fired a constable found guilty of harassing a co-worker and later lying about it to investigators.
Const. Fiona Moffat was ordered dismissed from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Wednesday after 22 years, according to a Nov. 28 written decision from RCMP Supt. Fred Kamins, who presided over her months-long disciplinary hearing.

Watch: Alberta bans mandatory high heels at work
Alberta Labour Minister Christina Gray said Alberta will follow B.C. and Manitoba by banning mandatory high heel policies in the workplace.
“Mandatory high heel policies that can put workers at risks for slips, trips and falls and can become a workplace hazard are no longer acceptable,” Alberta Labour Minister Christina Gray said Friday morning at Cibo Bistro in Oliver. “We’re doing this after hearing from so many Albertans and workers who have had detrimental effects to -
Rachel Notley: Alberta faces a momentous decision on oil production
My fellow Albertans, your energy resources — the natural inheritance of every person in this province — are being sold for next to nothing.
A decision needs to be made, one with real repercussions for working people and our entire economy. I want to take this opportunity to lay out the problem Alberta faces and the choice in front of us.
First, let’s look at the problem we are facing. We are in a position where we can’t move our oil because government after government in -

Edmonton Oilers Gear up for Vegas coming to town
The 3-1-1 Oilers will be measuring their recent progress against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who are 5-0-0 over the same span. After some early stumbles the Knights seem to have their groove back and represent the toughest test since Ken Hitchcock took over behind the bench.
“They’re back to feeling it now and playing really well,” said Hitchcock, who figured the Knights might have a sluggish start after losing in last year’s Stanley Cup final.

'Why wouldn't we have just done this already?': Report finds possible tax savings in city budget

Watch: Joe Ceci warns of new economic headwinds facing Alberta
Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci emphasized the looming crisis in the oil industry with the price differential and its effect on the nation.
Alberta’s latest economic update boasted of strong growth in the first half of 2018-19, but warned of a future slump due to the oil price differential pummeling energy producers.
The differential is forecast to average US$29.25 per barrel for the fiscal year, up by US$6.90 compared to the March budget.
