After falling just short of the fundraising goal last holiday season, Edmonton’s Salvation Army Kettle Campaign is adding a cashless way to donate in hopes of reaching its increased target of $550,000.
This year’s campaign launched across the city at 22 locations Nov. 12, including 15 locations that now have point of sale terminals to accept donations by debit and credit card.
Eager donors have been asking for this addition in recent years because people carry cash less than before,

Mistreated dog found in garbage bag in Costco parking lot recovering, says humane society
Edmonton Humane Society staff are trying to locate the owner of a dog they say was found inside a garbage bag enclosed in a cardboard box in the city’s northwest earlier this month.
The Shih Tzu-type dog, which staff have nicknamed Wyatt, was found in severe distress with his entire body covered in dense mats of fur that was preventing him from defecating, peace officer Danika Bodnarchuk said in a news release Monday.
“The manner in which the dog was left and his condition upon arriv -

An Alberta teacher lost her right to teach Monday after being found guilty of humiliating and disdainful conduct toward her students.
Frieda Anne Mennes, 65, also faces $32,500 in fines for unprofessional conduct toward students, staff and parents over a period dating back to 1981.
Testimony during the Edmonton-based Alberta Teachers’ Association hearing said her conduct was so hurtful, children developed physical symptoms of distress. Some complained of stomach aches, headaches and cried -
Wildlife: Remembering Edmonton Poet Laureate E.D. Blodgett
One of Edmonton’s creative giants passed away in Surrey on Nov. 15, former Edmonton Poet Laureate Edward Dickenson (E.D.) Blodgett.
In 1996, he won the Governor General’s Award for poetry for his collection Apostrophes: Woman at a Piano, and spent the majority of his professional life in Edmonton, co-founding the Writers Guild of Alberta, inhabiting the Writer in Residence position at MacEwan University in 2004, being named to our Culture Hall of Fame in 2011 and publishing 30 books -
Three to See on Tuesday: Boy Erased, the Tenors and a Jasper crane
Boy Erased: Lucas Hedges stars at Jared Eamons, son of a Baptist preacher (Russell Crowe) and a self-style hairdresser (Nicole Kidman). The film begins in medias res, with Jared entering into his first day at the Love In Action gay conversion therapy program. Chief therapist Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton) tells the group that their sexuality is a choice, influenced by poor parenting. He instructs them to perform harsh “moral inventories” of themselves and their families, and requires t -
Teen killed in single-vehicle rollover near Ponoka
Mounties are still trying to determine all the factors leading up to the death of a 17-year-old teenage boy Sunday near Ponoka.
Officers arrived at the single-vehicle rollover on Highway 2A near Township Road 422 just after 9 p.m. to find a vehicle had left the road and rolled several times.
The teenager died at the scene. -
Philadelphia Flyers fire GM Ron Hextall; might Edmonton Oilers be considering likewise with Peter Chiarelli?
The axe dropped on Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Ron Hextall on Monday morning. Fans of a certain vintage who remember Hextall-the-goalie chopping down Edmonton Oilers’ winger Kent Nilsson like a lumberjack in the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals might be thinking “turnaround is fair play”, but today’s action has far more relevance on the current situation in Edmonton.
Consider: Hextall’s 2018-19 Flyers posted a 10-11-2 record with a -13 goal differential, virtually id -
Alberta reaches tentative funding deal with municipalities
After months of divisive wrangling, the province and Alberta’s cities have reached a tentative funding deal tied to the provincial government’s general revenues, the municipal affairs minister said Monday.
Minister Shaye Anderson told Postmedia Monday morning that cabinet will talk about the deal today.
He was tight-lipped on details, but said he’s “very optimistic” he’ll be able to release numbers later this week.
“We talked before about trying to get s -
Alberta launches beer trade challenge against Ontario, cancels small brewers grant program
Alberta has taken the first step in a trade challenge against Ontario over what cabinet ministers describe as unfair liquor policies that disadvantage brewers.
The government also cancelled the Alberta Small Brewer Development program, which was part of a drawn-out battle over beer pricing after the NDP overhauled its beer markup system.
Finance Minister Joe Ceci said the controversial program will end Dec. 15.
In its place, the province is launching a universal small br -
Lotto Max mystery: Record $60 million lotto winner still to come forward
The winner of a record-equalling $60 million Lotto Max jackpot last month has yet to come forward to claim their cash, but, somewhat surprisingly, that in itself is not an unusual thing.
In fact, some winners have been known to deliberately avoid claiming their winnings for months on end while they get their lives in order and work out what their new life priorities are.
“The latest is there’s no latest,” joked Western Canada Lottery Corporation spokesman Kevin van Egdom o -
Man facing string of charges following fatal Cadotte Lake hit and run
A man is facing charges including impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death after a 21-year-old Cadotte Lake resident died in the township last week.
Mounties were called to the northern Alberta hamlet in the early hours of Nov. 23 for a report of a hit and run on Highway 986.
The woman had died from her injuries before the officers arrived and the suspected driver of the motor vehicle had left the scene prior to their arrival, police said Monday.

Edmonton weather: How's that Grey Cup hangover going?
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Folks who didn’t take today off to nurse a savage Grey Cup hangover and are heading to work should expect a chilly Monday morning thanks to 15 km/h winds out of the southeast that will drop the windchill down to about -13 C for the first few hours of the day.
Those temperatures will rise to about -6 C in the afternoon with a top of -1 C as the early morning cloudiness clears.
Tonight the winds are going to pick up again t -

'Lands belong to all of us': Conflict over Jason Kenney's proposed Crown land sales in Peace Country
A United Conservative plan to sell off Crown land in the Peace Country should it win the 2019 election is being welcomed by the local municipality, but environmentalists aren’t so impressed.
UPC Leader Jason Kenney told the Rural Municipalities of Alberta conference last week he’s considering a land sell-off similar to a program under former premier Ed Stelmach.
Mackenzie County Reeve Josh Knelsen told Postmedia the program dating back to the early 2010s created a significant ec -
'It can't be a propaganda office': City staff aim to increase internal news production
City staff say they’ll ask each other the “tough questions” as Edmonton boosts internal news production.
Local officials are quick to say this will not be a $6.3-million propaganda office. But industry watcher April Lindgren says she’s skeptical that a government employee would actually ask uncomfortable questions of the boss, or publish something unflattering.
“Good intentions don’t make journalism. What makes journalism is news that’s produced by someb -
Gold Bar sewer expansion reveals 'governance issue,' says councillor
City councillors are raising questions about the secretive nature of decisions on Edmonton’s deep sewers.
The issue was flagged by neighbours around the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant, worried an internal city decision will lead to more odours and ramped up processing at the river valley site.
Now council’s utility committee is asking it to approve a motion Tuesday that could make these decisions more transparent. It would direct administration to explore options for council to -

Cult of Hockey Player Grades: The Edmonton Oilers serve up too many Grade "A" mistakes in a 5-2 loss to the L.A. Kings
The Edmonton Oilers blew a glorious chance to climb the standings Sunday night, losing 5-2 to the last team in the NHL.
In fact, the Kings were a last place team that had played the night before and lost 4-2 to the Canucks. They were also a club that started its goaltender on back-to-back nights, a tactic that almost always backfires. Almost.
There were times when it appeared as if the Oilers were about to pull away from L.A.. The opportunities were there. But each time something impeded th -
Calgary wins title but fans say Grey Cup was also a big win for Edmonton
It was so good, Airdrie resident Dennis Schell might even come back to Edmonton some time.
Moments after the Calgary Stampeders emerged as Grey Cup victors Sunday evening, defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 27-16, jubilant Stamps fan Schell put aside the Edmonton-Calgary rivalry for a moment to concede the host city had showed him a good time.
“I was worried right to the end, because until the last couple seasons, they’ve choked right at the end,” he said of his team.

Review: Pro Coro choir pushes the cutting edge of new music
Of all of Edmonton’s larger-scale performing groups, it is Pro Coro, Edmonton’s premiere choir, who is most likely to give audiences a glimpse into what is happening globally in contemporary classical music.
I’m not talking about new works that follow already well-traveled musical paths, however worthy they might be, but about works that are consciously pushing the cutting edge of new music.
Pro Coro were at it again on Saturday, Nov 24, in a concert at a venue new to both them
