A 24-year-old man shot by RCMP after a stolen vehicle call didn’t realize he’d suffered a gunshot wound until officers were processing him after his arrest near Hinton, says the province’s police watchdog.
Hinton RCMP were responding around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to the stolen vehicle complaint in a rural area outside the town, about 285 km west of Edmonton, when officers walking into a wooded remote area found a man behind the wheel of a Ford F-350 truck, said the Alberta Serious I

Toronto's Turboprop brings crisp, positive vibe to Canada's jazz
A turboprop is a small, energy-efficient propeller-driven aircraft that manoeuvres with ease.
Those characteristics might also be ascribed to Turboprop, the six-member Toronto jazz band led by driving force Ernesto Cervini which touches down in Edmonton this weekend.
You might ask how a six-piece qualifies as small but that still fits the sextet, just out with its third release, Abundance on Anzic Records. Consider some of the bigger sounds this versatile vehicle takes on, driven by multiple com -
Notes from the Dome: NDP MLA on leave, UCP slams environment minister and animal protection calls
The absence of Calgary-Varsity NDP MLA Stephanie McLean from the house this session has set the tongues of Alberta legislature watchers wagging.
Could she be sitting out in a silent protest to support ousted NDP MLA Robyn Luff? Is she just angry she was dropped from cabinet?
The answer is no.
Alberta NDP caucus communications director Robin Steudel told Postmedia McLean is on leave in accordance with the Legislative Assembly Act.
McLean didn’t elaborate in a brief email exchange, -

'Some things don’t make sense': Dorian Boose lived his football dream but died following years on Edmonton streets
The ‘A’ side of Dorian Boose — the rich gospel voice and piano fingers, the charisma and handsome profile — that’s what most Edmonton Eskimos teammates remember first.
They shared a moment in 2003, less about football than friendship, when Steve Charbonneau and Boose played piano in a darkened Toronto hotel lobby during the great blackout of 2003. The two massive defensive linemen improvised a little and played as much as they knew of Hallelujah, killing time after -
Edmonton weather: Remember, remember nothing makes sense in November
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure 1.1 C with 4 km/h winds out of the west, southwest.
What is November anyway? I don’t get it. Is it supposed to be fall? Winter? Spring? It’s all over the place, really, and it makes for some silly temperature variations. According to Environment Canada data, in 1996 it was -30 C on this day, and in 2005 it was 18.2 C. Make up your mind November -
Thursday's letters: Environmentalists use double-standard
Re. “Lobbyists trying to save nature,” Letters, Nov. 20
Greenpeace, the David Suzuki Foundation and other groups have demonized Alberta oil while choosing to completely ignore major contributors to climate change in their own backyards.
As Alberta phases out coal-fired power plants, B.C. has ramped up coal production and Vancouver port is now the largest exporter of coal in North America. Most is shipped to China where its consumption contributes to pollution and dreadful air quality -

Keith Gerein: Alarming report shows Alberta positioned for slow-moving fiscal disaster
Think Alberta’s projected $8-billion deficit is big?
Try $40 billion.
Though hard to believe, that’s the planet of red ink the province could be drowning in just a little over 20 years from now.
The alarming number is featured in a new paper by University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe, who sees a “fiscal gap” on the horizon that will prove impassable without major structural changes to the province’s finances.
The gap is so large that it’s more accurate to -
A thank you from Brenda Boose
Dorian Boose’s ex-wife Brenda declined to be interviewed at length for Postmedia’s story about his life and death. However, she wished to express her thanks to everyone in Edmonton who tried to help Dorian. This is her statement:

There really are no words for the grief that has ensued since. I’ve lost others that I -
Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli savaged for handling of team, but praised for coaching change
Pundits from across the NHL are weighing in on the Edmonton Oilers firing of Todd McLellan and hiring of Ken Hitchcock, with the general consensus being that it was GM Peter Chiarelli who was most to blame for the mediocre state of the team, but that Chiarelli also made a good move in bringing in Hitchcock as interim coach.
Here’s a sampling of opinion, along with links to the full columns written by each hockey pundit:

10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Tuck Everlasting, Christmas Glow, and Stiff Little Fingers
Tuck Everlasting
Would you like to live forever? That’s the philosophical and also very real question posed in the St. Albert Children’s Theatre production of Tuck Everlasting, taking place at the Arden Theatre until early December. Based on the best-selling children’s novel by Natalie Babbitt, the play follows young Winnie Foster as she meets the enigmatic Tuck family, who live deep within the woods, and finds out about the magical spring that causes their immortality.

Man dead after high-speed crash on Anthony Henday Drive
A man was killed in a single-vehicle collision that closed a section of Anthony Henday Drive just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.
A police spokeswoman said the crash forced the closure of the Henday’s southbound lanes between Callingwood Road and Lessard Road.
Police said the collision, just north of the Lessard Road exit, happened after a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup travelling southbound at a high rate of speed lost control.
The truck entered the centre median and struck a light standard. A 36-year-old -

Ousted NDP MLA Robyn Luff returns to legislature as an independent
Calgary-East MLA Robyn Luff returned to the legislature Wednesday, ending her protest over what she considered mistreatment at the hands of her former party.
Walking up the marble stairs to the chamber for the first time since being booted from the NDP caucus, Luff said it felt good to be back.
“I can’t say I would have expected to find myself here, but this is where I am,” she said.

The Press Gallery interview: Sarah Hoffman on being the NDP's attack dog, and wait times
Deputy premier Sarah Hoffman has been an avid listener of the Press Gallery podcast, and so we hoped to have her on as our first ever guest for the new Press Gallery Interview format we launched last month.Scheduling difficulties couldn’t make that happen, but she is the first woman to join us on the show. This week she stops by the Edmonton Journal studio to talk about her role as the “attack dog” for the NDP government, concern over rising wait times for some health services -
Edmonton had Canada's third-highest homicide rate last year; Alberta leads country in gun-related slayings
Edmonton had Canada’s third-highest homicide rate last year, according to a Statistics Canada report released Wednesday.
The numbers also show Alberta had Canada’s highest rate of gun-related slayings — and that homicides involving guns are far more common in rural areas than in cities in the province.
The Edmonton area had 49 homicides in 2017 — a rate of 3.49 homicides per 100,000 population. That’s the third-highest rate in Canada, behind only Thunder Bay (seven
