Moves by Eastern Canada provinces to dissolve or strip powers from locally elected school boards won’t happen in Alberta under an NDP government, Education Minister David Eggen said Tuesday.
“I’ve seen a disturbing trend across the country,” Eggen told Alberta school trustees assembled in Edmonton for the Alberta School Boards’ Association’s fall general meeting.
Ministers from across the country at a July meeting, including Nova Scotia’s education minis

Alberta public sector pension overhaul to end government control of funds
A sweeping overhaul of Alberta’s public sector pensions has the government relinquishing control of $60 billion in fund assets.
Changes to Alberta’s three largest public plans currently must be approved by cabinet.
New laws tabled by Finance Minister Joe Ceci Tuesday remove that requirement, giving employer and employee ultimate control over benefits and the design and financial health of their pensions through new “sponsor boards.”
Tuesday’s bill doesn’t chan -
'One in six is too many': Report says Alberta provincial poverty reduction strategy needed
Child poverty is on the rise in the province and non-profit public interest groups are calling on the Alberta government to act with a poverty reduction strategy – as one of only two provinces without one.
One in six children are living in poverty in Alberta as of 2016 – the most recent data available – and the number has grown 23.4 per cent over the last 10 years, according to the annual Alberta Poverty Report released Tuesday by Public Interest Alberta, the Edmonton Social Pl -

A 20-year-old man is facing seven charges after a police vehicle was rammed by a fleeing stolen truck in Ponoka Monday.
RCMP responded around 8:30 a.m. to the stolen truck report at a residence in the town 105 kilometres south of Edmonton. The driver tried to flee in the Dodge Ram when police arrived, RCMP said in a Tuesday release.
The driver reversed, striking the struck the front end of an RCMP truck and leaving two officers with minor injuries, the release said.
The driver then took off but -
"I know what is wrong, but it's not going to get fixed overnight" — Ken Hitchcock comments on his new gig as Edmonton Oilers bench boss
Ken Hitchcock held his first media avail as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s a full transcript of his remarks.
On coaching in his home town
“It’s a major factor, but the big factor for me was I know so many people in the organization. We’ve won a lot together. Peter and I really got along well at the Olympics, he was really good for us as a coaching staff. I’ve known Manny (Viveiros) and Glen (Gulutzan) for a long, long time, and obviou -
Alberta injects $1 billion more into petrochemical upgrading program
Premier Rachel Notley is boosting a petrochemical upgrading program to the tune of $1 billion as energy producers struggle with a troubling oil price differential.
“We’re facing pretty stiff headwinds right now with what’s going on with the differential,” Notley told reporters Tuesday, following a speech at a Rural Municipalities of Alberta convention in downtown Edmonton.
In her speech, she announced additional investment for a petrochemical upgrading program that launch -
RCMP officer, suspect injured in exchange after stolen vehicle call near Hinton
The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a male suspect and an RCMP officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a confrontation near Hinton Tuesday morning.
RCMP members were responding to the stolen vehicle complaint in a rural area outside the town, about 285 kilometres west of Edmonton, when the exchange involving a police weapon took place, said Mounties in Tuesday release.
The RCMP officer was taken to hospital in stable condition. The male suspect also sustained mi -
Three to See on Wednesday: Jahma's art, a doggie play and Beaver blues
Doug Jahma estate sale: One of Edmonton’s most recognizable subject-and-style figure painters, Doug Jahma died of a heart attack last year, leaving a gap in our creative ecosystem. As Jahma noted, “I am moved by the questions raised in the process of a male artist painting females. The political, cultural, sexual and historical aspects combine to create a fertile and expansive subject matter for me. A great stimulus to paint.” This estate sale of his work, through Nov. 30, has -

Man kicked out of bar found dead on street two days later, AGLC investigating
The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission is investigating after a 20-year-old man kicked out of a south-side nightclub was found dead in the area two days later.
Mohamed Munye Abdi –- known as Mo to friends and family –- was asked to leave The Ranch Roadhouse, 6107 104 St., Friday night, said bar owner Jesse Kupina, noting that staff made sure he had someone with him when he left.

"I think the roster is good enough" — Peter Chiarelli justifies Edmonton Oilers coaching change
The Todd McLellan era in Edmonton came to a sudden end on Tuesday morning after three and a quarter seasons.
The #Oilers have named Edmonton native Ken Hitchcock as their new Head Coach after relieving Todd McLellan of his duties earlier this morning. pic.twitter.com/joNXTLMXol

Tuesday's letters: Where's the real 'Loserpeg?'
Re. “Stampeders earn a chance at redemption,” Terry Jones, Nov. 19
I was very surprised to read Terry Jones’ comment that “the Blue Bombers are headed home to Loserpeg again.” That sort of Grade 5 name-calling has no place, north of the U.S. border. I remember how insulted we all were when the British press labelled our city “Deadmonton” during the World Track and Field Championships. Why insult a city in your own country?
Beside being mean-spirited, Mr -
Twitter reacts to firing of Todd McLellan, hiring of Ken Hitchcock: "Tough love coming into Oilers dressing room asap"
The Edmonton Oilers have moved on from head coach Todd McLellan, as I argued they should do in a post yesterday. It sounds like Ken Hitchcock is an interim coach.
Here is The Cult’s post today from Kurt Leavins on the move.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
John Shannon @JSportsnetHitchcock will be the head coach for the remainder of this season. Agreement to reevaluate future at season’s end.

The Edmonton Oilers fire Todd McLellan, hire Hitch as they try to stop their slide in a hungry Shark tank
Game Day #21:Edmonton Oilers (9-10-1) vs. San Jose Sharks (11-7-3)
This just in: The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Todd McLellan, and replaced him with legendary NHL bench boss Ken Hitchcock. Hitchcock will be on the job tonight, in San Jose.
I say legendary, as Hitch has 823 career victories (823-506-88) on his resume, making him the 3rd winningest coach of all time. As per SportsNet’s John Shannon, Hitchcock will be the head coach for the remainder of this season. Then, it would -
Edmonton weather: The snow is melting, melting. Ohhhhh, what a world!
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure -1.3 C with 5 km/h winds out of the southwest contributing to a -3 windchill.
Well the snow’s almost gone again. And given the next three days show nothing but sunshine and plus-degree temperatures, it’s safe to say the melting will continue. This has created some slick sidewalks and roads out there so do be careful when you’re out and abo -
Editorial: No quick fix to oil glut
You know things have hit rock bottom in the oilpatch when two of the industry’s big players are practically begging for government intervention.
But unlike certain aircraft companies and automakers in Quebec and Ontario which have benefited from billions of Canadian tax dollars, Cenovus and Canadian Natural Resources are not asking for bailouts, sweetheart loans or subsidies.
They’re pleading for the province of Alberta to impose production cuts on their own industry to reduce a glut -

The Short Story Advent Calendar is back and more beautiful than ever
One of Edmonton’s cleverest literary traditions has grown into an international affair.
Michael Hingston is the editor and co-producer of the annual Short Story Advent Calendar, and while keeping space within for local and regional content, every year he calls on writing from authors around the world to fill it with 24 stories.
“It’s an excuse to knock on the doors of my favourite writers and wave at them through the window,” he said. “But in the last couple years, -
Edmonton MP sues the Gateway student newspaper for defamation
Edmonton-Griesbach Conservative MP Kerry Diotte is suing the University of Alberta student newspaper over a pair of articles that he claims have defamed him.
On Nov. 19, Diotte filed a statement of claim against the Gateway Student Journalism Society, which publishes the U of A’s student newspaper.
Diotte takes issue with a pair of articles published on the newspaper’s website earlier this month.
“The plaintiff, Kerry Diotte, asserts that he is not a racist and that (the articl -
Keith Gerein: Oil price crisis a 'real and present danger' to NDP's survival
If you’re one of those Albertans who follow the ups and downs of oil prices more than the hockey standings, you’ll know the province’s crude is losing about as often as the Edmonton Oilers these days.
A look at the market numbers tells the tale, and you don’t need to be an economist to understand.
Near the top of the table is the price for West Texas Intermediate, which traded at around US$57 a barrel on Monday.
Way behind is Western Canadian Select — the stream tha -
Trustees advocate for more mental health services in Alberta schools
An injection of cash last spring for school mental health therapists was helpful, but not enough to help the number of students arriving in Alberta schools daily with mental health problems, an Edmonton school trustee said Monday.
“We are nowhere close to being able to meet these needs in our education and health systems,” Edmonton public school trustee Shelagh Dunn said of the estimated 20 per cent of children and youth living with mental health problems.
On Monday, school trustees -
School boards to lobby for restored funding, specialized curriculum for English language learning students
The growing number of schoolchildren not fluent in English should prompt government to create a provincial English language learner curriculum, school trustees from across Alberta said Monday.
The provincial government should also restore seven years of extra funding to schools with English language learners (ELLs) enrolled and increase the rate of funding, said trustees at an Alberta School Boards’ Association meeting.

Notes from the Dome: Pesticides, the Paris Accord and new Alberta licence plates
The Alberta Liberals want an independent review of Alberta’s pesticide use regulations, and how they’re monitored, enforced and reported.
Pesticide use increased by more than 60 per cent in the province between 2003 and 2013. The Liberals say that’s worrying Albertans, as is the lack of enforcement and accountability.
Sheryl McCumsey with Pesticide Free Alberta said provincial compliance officers aren’t properly monitoring pesticide applications, nor are they fu -
Political harassment policies released in wake of complaints
The NDP has disclosed its policy on harassment in the wake of revelations two NDP MLAs and one UCP MLA have been investigated following workplace complaints.
In the case of the NDP the two complaints involved sexual misconduct, but the party is doubling down on its promise not to release the MLA’s identities.
It boils down to confidentiality, which comprises a clause in the NDP policy.
The policy says only those people necessary to the investigation will be made aware of the comp -
Player grades, Games 11-20: Hot start a distant memory for Edmonton Oilers after annual November nosedive
The Edmonton Oilers survived the most difficult part of their 2018-19 season in pretty good shape.
