  • Three to See on Tuesday: Bergman, SNAP sale and a little history

Through a Glass Darkly: Ingmar Bergman’s 45 films span seven decades, diving unflinchingly into difficult questions facing us humans — he’s one of the great cinematic portrait painters, especially of those under internal stress. To celebrate the centenary of this singular artist’s birth, Metro Cinema is playing a number of the Swede’s great, yet perhaps lesser-known works (outside of, for example, The Seventh Seal and Persona). • Time for a new coach of the Edmonton Oilers? Yes

The Edmonton Oilers now have nine wins and 11 losses.
Worse, in their last seven games, they have just one win and six losses. They have let in 29 goals and scored 17 goals, six of them in one game against Montreal.
They are trending in the wrong direction.
At best, it’s unclear that head coach Todd McLellan has the answers to reverse this trend.
At worst — and this is where I’m at — we’ve now seen McLellan’s work for 3.25, we’ve had plenty of time to ju
  • Finding space rocks faster: 'Fireball network' to detect meteorites includes local camera installs

Western Canada is getting a faster way to track fireballs.
A “fireball network” of all-sky cameras is being put in place to allow for automated detection of meteorite-dropping fireballs, said University of Alberta scientist Chris Herd, curator of one of the world’s top facilities for preserving and studying the space rocks.
The new system will help scientists detect fireballs as they streak across the sky; it will then then triangulate the landing location of any meteorites tha

  • Monitoring bracelets and tax credits: Conservative task force report suggests sweeping changes to address rural crime

RCMP contract policing in Alberta should be reviewed to see if it is sufficient or should be replaced by an expanded regional policing model or a “fully empowered provincial police service,” a new task force report released by Alberta members of the federal Conservative Party says.
Furthermore, the report says, RCMP contract policing positions should be examined “to ensure they are not being used to fulfil other RCMP mandate positions.”

  • Maps show homeless camps sprawled across city of Edmonton

It’s increasingly common for people experiencing homelessness to camp in isolated areas of city suburbs and even beyond municipal limits, according to an outreach worker who offers resources to people living rough.
Maps provided to Postmedia by the city show that between January and October of this year, city crews cleaned up 1,800 camps, with sites being found in all 12 wards.

  • Crowded rooms: Class sizes surged in Alberta schools as spending remained untracked, new data shows

As Alberta taxpayers poured hundreds of millions of dollars every year into a program to curtail large class sizes, more and more classes across the province failed to meet government guidelines in the last 14 years.
A Postmedia analysis of a trove of data published online by Alberta Education shows that larger-than-recommended class sizes initially dropped during the first few years of targeted investments through its high-profile class size initiative.
In 2009, the trend reversed, and the numb
  • Watch: Edmonton Oilers lose 6-3 to Vegas Golden Knights

The Oilers lost for the sixth time in their last seven games, following up their 4-2 defeat in Calgary. For the second night in a row the Oilers staked themselves an early lead and then wilted when the other side dug in and fought back. The lack of finish on the Oilers is becoming a glaring problem. They went 0-for-3 on breakaways when the game was

For the 2nd consecutive game the Edmonton Oilers started well against a Pacific Division rival, only to watch a well-earned lead evaporate…and then some.
Sunday it was an absolutely brutal 2 minute 12 second sequence in the 2nd Period. The Oilers were on the power play and looking to take a 3-1 stranglehold in the game. The 1st unit had threatened several times but couldn’t cash. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in particular had an open net but couldn’t find twine. Then the 2nd unit came
