Howitzer gun blasts echoing around Beechmount Cemetery on Monday will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 that ended the fighting of the First World War.
Soldiers from the Lord Strathcona’s Horse and 61 Field Battery will be participating in the 11 a.m. ceremony, hosted by the No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation.
During the parade — in advance of Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 — the 25-pound Howitzer gun will be fired to mark the start and the end of two

Athabasca University reaches deal with cloud-computing giant Amazon
Athabasca University is joining an ever-increasing list of post-secondary schools in Canada to turn to cloud-based computing using the underlying architecture of global tech powerhouse Amazon.
Canada’s only public digital post-secondary institution announced late last week it had joined force with Amazon Web Services to modernize its information technology network.
The move is part of a five-year digital transformation strategy stemming from a top-to-bottom review of the university ordered -
Garden Hits & Myths: 'Weeding' out facts about cannabis character, heritage
I’ve always been fascinated by the science of plants. It’s the main reason why I studied plant science at university.
But during those university days, I didn’t believe that cannabis would ever become legal in Canada. Cannabis was, basically, just fodder for a lot of jokes with my friends. I spent a lot of time on the science of how to kill weeds rather than how to grow weed!
Well, fast forward to 2018 and the legalization of adult-use cannabis has come and gone. Now a lot of m -
Faulkner Real Estate Report: Community pitches in to help save woman's ant-infested home
Karla Touet had worked hard for several years to save up to buy her first home. So when the carpenter ants came marching in, even though her home was severely damaged and compromised, she wasn’t about to give up.
Karla sought out advice, and it seemed that there was a common thread in the advice she received considering the extent of the damage — walk away and claim bankruptcy.
Karla’s story is a little different. She grew up in foster care, so she never really experienced home -
Mikko Koskinen keeps the net as Edmonton Oilers kick off four-game roadie in Detroit
Game Day 13: Oilers at Red Wings
Since their 4-0 win over Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night, the Edmonton Oilers have undergone a number of roster changes: youngsters Evan Bouchard and Cooper Marody assigned to junior and the AHL respectively, more experienced hands like Kevin Gravel and Ty Rattie recalled from the minors/activated from injured reserve. But those moves will be transparent to the actual team on the ice in Detroit this evening. As Bouchard and Marody watched from the pressbox o -
Review: Jack White hosts a happening at Rogers Place
The word ‘happening’ existed long before the term ‘happening’ originated in the late 1950s, when it came to denote an event wherein the interaction between performer and audience elevated it into the realm of performance art.
A Jack White concert is a happening.
And, like most happenings to come before it (and hopefully many more to follow) a Jack White concert is a phone-free show, which ratchets up the crowd’s expectation of seeing something memorable enough to ex -

Saturday's letters: Ditch the leaf blower for a rake
Ah, autumn! A time for crisp air and contemplative walks. For peace and quiet — or not.
These days my reveries are often abruptly disturbed by the cacophony of a noisy leaf blower. Homeowners, city workers, private contractors are out — all intent on wrangling pesky leaves into a pile. Few of these zealous leaf-herders bother to wear earplugs, or face masks.
According to the the Canadian Lung Association, leaf blowers can stir up lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. Exposure to these -
Opinion: Cutting kids from the team shouldn't end their desire to play
As researchers and educators, we know firsthand the positive impact that participation in sports can have on child development. We are also acutely aware that many children and youth do not have the chance to attain these benefits as they are cut from teams, which is sometimes referred to as de-selection.
Findings from our research confirm that de-selection cuts deep. There are negative emotional, social and physical consequences. Athletes lose friends and are forced to find new social circles. -

Dangerous trick: Pins in Halloween candy alarm Mounties in Devon, Thorsby
Halloween trick-or-treaters in Devon got a nasty surprise when they discovered pins in three different treats, Mounties said Friday.
The pins, described as straight with a curved top, were found in a marshmallow-based candy, a Starburst and a deflated bag of Cheetos.
Mounties believe the treats came from the same location but they have yet to determine which home or neighbourhood they came from.
