Yellowknife drone operator fined, banned from flying
A Yellowknife man is believed to be the first person in the Northwest Territories to be charged with the unsafe operation of a drone, Mounties said this week.
The charge dates back to September last year when several people complained to RCMP of a drone being flown in the area of 54 Street and an area close to the Yellowknife Airport.
Several days after the investigation was launched, Mounties identified the lone operator and charged him with one count of dangerous operation of an aircraft. -
Not a remote chance: Leaving garage door openers in cars invites home robberies
Leaving a garage door opener in an unlocked vehicle invites robberies, warn city police.
More than 35 cases of vehicle and garage break-and-enters have been reported to city police over the past month or so. In most cases, thieves gained access to residential garages after finding remote door openers inside vehicles parked outside.
“Police and its partners, including insurance agencies, have repeatedly messaged the public over the last several years, reminding citizens not to leave garage -
Dopamine stolen from Whitehorse ambulance could kill
Mounties are warning thieves who stole dopamine from an ambulance in Whitehorse that its use could cause a heart attack.
Dopamine, which is not meant to be administered without a medical infusion device, has the ability to cause severe hypertension and tissue necrosis, police said.
“There is enough medication in the stolen bag of dopamine to cause serious harm or death,” said RCMP in a release this week.
Police said the theft of the 250-millilitre drip bag along with vehicle gas -
'Heartbroken': St. Albert Canoe and Kayak Club hopes for return of missing boats worth $50,000
Members of the St. Albert Canoe and Kayak Club were devastated after discovering that a storage trailer containing 35 race boats was stolen, says the head coach.
“We’re so heartbroken,” said Zak Mahmoudi in an interview Saturday, adding the property value amounts to more than $50,000. “It took us almost 10 years to save money, apply for grants, buy these boats.”
He’s also pleading with the public to keep an eye out for the boats and asking the person who -
Longtime MLA Brian Mason farewells party faithful at NDP convention
Longtime Edmonton NDP MLA Brian Mason was a little emotional Saturday afternoon.
He had just been honoured at his party’s convention, a tribute after announcing he won’t seek re-election in 2019.
Around 1,200 Alberta New Democrats descended on Edmonton’s Westin Hotel for the first full day of convention, grinding through caucus reports and a handful of resolutions before Mason’s farewell just after noon.
Mason was first elected to Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood in 2000, -
Are you a winner? $60 million Lotto Max jackpot ticket sold in Edmonton
The country’s newest multimillionaire might just be your neighbour in Edmonton after the lone winning ticket for Friday night’s $60 million Lotto Max jackpot was sold in Alberta’s provincial capital city.
The Western Canada Lottery Corporation listed the winning numbers on its website Saturday morning but it might be a few days, or even weeks, before we know exactly who the winner is or exactly which shop the winning ticket was sold at.

Gate worth the wait: Edgewater Estates offers Leduc's first gated community
It’s Leduc’s first gated community.
Edgewater Estates, part of Southfork — one of Leduc’s newer neighbourhoods — will feature customizable homes built on oversized lots, with three-car garages and walkout options, including the ability to have a full-size RV or boat bay as part of the garage.
The new development had a mid-October grand opening, aiming to appeal to the expanding demographic of Albertans who are looking for the luxury of an estate home, while also hav -
Growing Things: Water thoroughly to make fairy rings a fantasy
Q: I own a cottage in central Alberta that is about eight years old, and my lawn there has two large fairy rings. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can control them?
A: It has been quite some time since we last talked about fairy rings, so this might be a good time to revisit the issue. This problem is caused by a fungus which, when established, cuts off the supply of water to the roots of the grass through its thick mesh of mycelium fibres in the soil.
You need to get water through that t -
Saturday's letters: Albertan loves curriculum — Saskatchewan's
Re. “New curriculum prepares youth for real world,” Julia Lipscombe, Oct. 20
May I say that I usually agree with and enjoy following Julia Lipscombe’s accounts of family life.
It appears that some Albertans are quite willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to provincial history, social structure and family values in the education system. Our three children not only survived Grades 1 to 12 but have prospered in post-secondary.
I believe they have largely p -
Oilers prepare to take on Predators
At first glance, the Edmonton Oilers schedule through the first four weeks of the NHL season seemed so daunting there were fears the year could be over before Halloween.
Yet, after flying to start the season in Europe, coming back to North American for a three-game road trip, and then returning home to host a perennial championship contender, the reigning President’s Trophy winners and defending Stanley Cup champions from the past three seasons, the Edmonton Oilers have come out of it wit -

Keith Gerein: Lubicon deal offers hopeful resolution to dark chapter in Alberta history
The first time I heard about the Lubicon Cree was in 1988.
I was 13 at the time, growing up in Calgary and, like, totally psyched about the Winter Olympics coming to my city.
One night I saw a story on the evening news. A group of Indigenous men from northern Alberta, all wearing blue ball caps, were calling for a boycott of the Games.
I remember being angry. Why would anyone want to shun the best party the province had ever seen?
My parents calmed me down and did their best to explain the issue -

New collection of Indigenous knowledge now available to First Nations schools
As chiefs from across Alberta prepared to snip a bright red ribbon with large novelty scissors, hung behind them on the wall was a framed black-and-white picture from 1970.
In it, Chief Norman Yellowbird is handing Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau the Red Paper, a set of counter-proposals to a government plan to eliminate Indian status in Canada.
The Red Paper set the course for First Nations people to take control of their historical and cultural resources and protect their languages, said Piikani -
David Staples: Alberta united (at last) on the war path against pipeline opponents
It’s a dark time for Alberta energy but there’s reason to hope. Out of despair and anger, out of getting shafted on oil prices and getting schooled by anti-oil propagandists, we’re coming together in a way that will lead to success.
On the left, the governing NDP has dropped the last shreds of its old naive anti-pipeline politics. On the right, both oil industry and conservative political leaders have generally backed away from their own counterproductive resistance to working -
