The trouble with the trains came from above.
Damage to about 40 per cent of the city’s LRT cars was discovered during a routine overnight inspection that led ETS to suspend service on the Metro Line Wednesday morning, and also created delays on the Capital Line.
ETS branch manager Eddie Robar later said it was determined that the pantographs on top of 40 of the city’s 100 car fleet had been damaged. A pantograph is the instrument on top of the trains that delivers the elect

Pot's street legal, now about that pink elephant in the room: liquor
Without parliamentary debate or official public consultation, Canada criminalized cannabis in 1923. The result of this, at least in my lifetime, was it was smoked pretty much anywhere, anyway, including at concerts, behind local pubs and at basically every house party I’ve ever been to, posh or poor.
And between stolen hoots out on the mean streets, we kept our wrists curled inward, just in case any manifestation of authority cruised along to ruin our lives for absolutely no ethical reason -
One dead in Grande Prairie area well site explosion
A 50-year-old man is dead after a well site explosion near Grande Prairie Tuesday night, say RCMP.
Police and emergency crews responding to the blast south of Grande Prairie near Musreau Lake around 7:20 p.m. found the man dead on scene. Musreau Lake is about 70 kilometres south of the Grande Prairie.
Another male was transported to hospital in Grande Prairie hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A third male was not physically harmed, said police in a Wednesday morning release.

The Puljujarvi Predicament: What is the solution to the enigma that is Jesse?
How do you solve a problem like Jesse?
Jesse Puljujarvi played a mere 9:00 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Tuesday’s 6-5 overtime loss. He started on the 2nd line alongside Leon Draisaitl and Tobias Rieder. But as the game went on others flat outplayed Puljujarvi. And by the 3rd Period Jesse was either on the 4th line or…on the bench.
This feels a whole lot like how we ended last season, doesn’t it? So how did we get here, and where do we go next?

'We can fix it quickly': 40 per cent of LRT cars damaged, Metro LRT line expected to resume service this afternoon
Morning commuters are in for a headache with one of Edmonton’s two LRT lines down due to an issue with the train cars.
Edmonton’s Metro Line LRT was down from Churchill station to NAIT Wednesday morning, said City of Edmonton spokeswoman Janice Schroeder. Buses are running the line instead.
Trains are running on the Capital Line, albeit with fewer cars than usual. Extra buses will handle overflow passengers from Southgate to University station, Schroeder said.

Crosby or McDavid? McDavid or Crosby?
There’s lots to like there. It’s a close race. Tough call.
One one hand you have Sidney Crosby: Captain Canada. Three Stanley Cups, an Olympic gold medal, lots to like there.
Plus there was that INSANE goal last night.

'It's been a long time coming': $103 million land claim settlement struck with Lubicon Lake Band following decades-long dispute
A long-standing land claim in northern Alberta has been finalized between the federal and provincial governments and Lubicon Lake Band with the parties agreeing to an almost $103 million final settlement.
As part of the historic agreement, the province of Alberta will pay $15 million “for purposes to be determined by Lubicon” as well as $3 million for capital enhancements to the Little Buffalo school to allow it to provide post-secondary education.
A large swath of land will also be -
Edmonton weather: Winter jacket in the morning, T-shirt in the afternoon
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure -0.8 C with 8 km/h winds out of the southwest contributing to a -4 windchill.
Yes, there’s a windchill and yes there was frost on my car this morning, but it looks the sun will come out and eventually actually warm up a little today. We’re at that point in the season where I just don’t know what to wear to work anymore. It’s cold enough -
Wednesday's letters: True grassroots debate at Alberta Party AGM
Re. “Alberta Party convention offers little to get really excited about,” Keith Gerein, Oct. 22
Mr. Gerein’s column missed the mark on political platform development and prioritized selling controversy over good governance.
It’s a concerning take considering the feedback we hear about concerns related to polarization and acrimony between our two larger rivals. Finding a way to seek common ground and respectful debate should be lauded, not derided.
It was clear that there -
Opinion: Let's not whitewash racism in the justice system
The Supreme Court of Canada recently heard the most important case in a generation regarding the Canadian legal system’s response to murdered and missing Indigenous women.
The hearing was the culmination of a case set in motion on the morning of June 22, 2011. On that day, Bradley Barton checked out of a room at the Yellowhead Inn in Edmonton, grabbed a coffee, and started his truck for another day of work.
In Barton’s motel bathroom, Cindy Gladue was already dead. Her children -
New St. Joseph's College deal could better prepare teachers for Catholic schools
Catholic school teachers must be uniquely trained for lessons unlikely to happen in public schools, says St. Joseph’s College academic dean Shawn Flynn.
In science class, a teacher should be ready to talk about how belief in evolution and belief in God can coexist, said Flynn, an assistant professor at the University of Alberta’s Catholic affiliate college.
“Equipping a high school teacher to lead that discussion for a classroom is far more valuable than not having the discussi -
Elise Stolte: Zero waste? Dumpster tomatoes? Young advocate challenges Edmonton's garbage plan
One yogurt container filled with waste — that’s all the garbage Anna Gnida and two roommates produce each week.
They’re part of a Zero Waste movement that’s inspired a new generation of metal-straw toting environmentalists.

David Staples: 'Very special' food product drives massive growth in Edmonton company
You might think it’s a slam dunk success to be Edmonton’s fastest growing company, as well as the 55th fastest growing company in all of Canada, according to Canadian Business Magazine.
In the last five years, BioNeutra’s revenues have grown 1,378 per cent.
The company is also about to open a new Edmonton factory to produce its main product, the organic sweetener VitaFiber, a low-calorie, prebiotic fiber derived from starch from peas, tapioca and root vegetables.

Alberta environment minister to make a case against Bill C-69 in Ottawa
Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips is in Ottawa Wednesday to meet with senators about federal legislation that would overhaul Canada’s energy regulatory process.
The NDP said Bill C-69, dubbed the Impact Assessment Act, would hurt Alberta and oversteps provincial jurisdiction.
In September, Premier Rachel Notley said cabinet ministers would head to Ottawa to make a case against the bill, which would change the rules for project approvals and replace the National E -
Player grades: Edmonton Oilers nab a point in barn-burner vs. Pens but leave the second one on the table
Penguins 6, Oilers 5 (OT)
Last goal wins.
An old-fashioned street hockey game broke out at Rogers Place on Tuesday night, with some of the top offensive talent in the NHL on display. Five times one of teams forged a goal in front, five times the other guys came back with the next one. Ultimately it took a session of 3-on-3 overtime.
In the end it was Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins who won the war, as Sid opened and closed the scoring to lead his club to a pulsating 6-5 win, their fift -

Oilers Coach Todd McLellan Post Game Against Pittsburgh
Fans who were hoping to see some fireworks from a room full of superstars definitely got some Tuesday — 11 goals and four lead changes as the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins went head to head in a wild, old-school shootout.
And, in the classic road hockey tradition, it came down to “next goal wins.”
And guess who scored it. Sidney Crosby delivered a goal for the ages 2:12 into overtime, bringing everyone in the building to their feet, and then to their knees, when he pu -
Finance minister fires back over municipal funding as city debates four-year building and repairs budget
The province’s two largest cities need to “come to the table” if they want to get a municipal funding agreement nailed down, Alberta’s finance minister said Tuesday in response to Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson’s frustration about a deal being delayed.
Finance Minister Joe Ceci’s comments came on the heels of City of Edmonton administrators presenting city council with a $4.3 billion proposed capital budget for 2019-2022 on Tuesday.

'Focus on predators': Outgoing top cop says police are not the solution to homelessness, mental health
When Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht walks out of the downtown division’s headquarters for the last time Friday, he will do so with a nagging regret.
For the past five years, the outgoing police boss had advocated on behalf of the service to anyone who would listen that the city would benefit from a wellness centre.
