UCP Leader Jason Kenney, MLA Prasad Panda cleared in ethics investigation
Alberta ethics commissioner Marguerite Trussler has cleared United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney and his colleague Prasad Panda, MLA for Calgary-Foothills, of any wrongdoing in their recent trip to India.
New Democrat caucus chairwoman Heather Sweet, MLA for Edmonton-Manning, lodged a formal complaint in September, noting concerns about private aircraft travel.
Sweet also had a problem with Kenney’s public comments about Reliance Industries — in which Panda owns sh -
NDP accuses UCP, political action committee of breaking election financing rules
The NDP has called on the elections commissioner to investigate the UCP, a political action committee and one of its main contributors after alleging they breached financing rules.
The newly registered PAC, or third-party advertiser, dubbed Shaping Alberta’s Future rolled out attack ads against the NDP that were funded by corporate donations, said government house leader Brian Mason on Tuesday.
“There’s corporate money back in financing of politics,” he said at a new -
10 things to do in Edmonton this week: The Once, Halloween Howl, and Reuben and the Dark
The Once
It’s always nice when old friends come around for a visit. In this case, St. John’s, Newfoundland-based folkies The Once are back in town with a new record, their sixth since forming back in 2004. The trio, which first came together when all three members were part of a summer repertory theatre group in the East Coast town of Trinity, continue to enrapture audiences and critics alike with the sweet harmonies and gorgeous melodies behind 2018’s Time Enough.

Game Day 7: Penguins at Oilers
Out of the frying pan, into the fire. Fresh off a 3-0 loss to Western Conference powerhouse Nashville Predators, the Edmonton Oilers finish out an über-tough four game homestand against two Eastern Conference powers who between them have won the last three Stanley Cups. New singer, same sound: Stone Temple Pilots return to rock the Shaw
For vocalist Jeff Gutt, playing with Stone Temple Pilots is as much a duty as a pleasure.
That’s not surprising given that the X Factor contestant and former member of nu metal unit Dry Cell started out as a fan of the popular ’90s grunge band, like many aspiring rockers of the time looking to now deceased frontman Scott Weiland as a musical idol.
“I actually get a lot of thanks from people for helping the band to continue,” says Gutt, taking a brief break from the t -

Mayer's music still more popular abroad but he's happy for homecoming
In an age when electronic instruments have taken over so much of the musical landscape it’s unusual to find someone devoted to the piano like Martin Mayer.
“There are so many emotions that you can evoke from the piano,” he asserts. “Each one of these 88 keys has its own special melody, and when you’re able to weave them together into something exciting it can still take my breath away.”
Despite the fact that he spent much of his upbringing and early career in -
Concert review: High-energy Foo Fighters range rock landscape at Rogers Place
According to recent reports, Foo Fighters are ready to take a long rest after their current tour is over.
That may be so, but the alt-rock six-piece didn’t appear to be showing any signs of fatigue on Monday night at Rogers Place. Playing their second-last show on the nearly year-and-a-half-long jaunt, the Fighters actually seemed energized, slamming through an extended set that included most of the expected musical landmarks from their 25-year career.
That’s right, Foo Fighters have -
Mind of a chef: Gail Hall biography reveals true story of late local food activist
A biography is a weighty responsibility. So when local food writer Twyla Campbell took on the job of telling the life story of the late chef Gail Hall in the book Maps, Markets and Matzo Ball Soup, it was with some trepidation.
“I didn’t know where to start,” said Campbell, a colleague and friend of Hall’s whom readers may know as the restaurant critic for CBC Radio’s morning show in Edmonton.
Hall was 65 when she died of breast cancer in November of 2016. For -
Wildlife — Not Your Final Girl film fest features three bold horrors
You’ve perhaps endured the horror-film trope: a woman and her companions are simply fresh meat to a ghost/killer/monster — but at the end of the movie she emerges as sole survivor from the haunted house/forest/alien-stalked corridors, covered in blood … but little else.
She’s the sole survivor, altered from one of two dimensions to the other — but most definitely scantily clad: all those twigs, nails and claws having conveniently torn those clothes off.
Still meat, -
Edmonton weather: Please don't take my sunshine away
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure 1.2 C with 11 km/h winds out of the southeast.
Well it’s not going to be as warm as we hoped. Forecasters have revised their high for today to reach 16 C, down from 18 C yesterday, and with winds howling just enough to make the air feel pretty darn chilly. Still, we’re well above seasonal and it’s expected to stay that way right up until the we -
Tuesday's letters: How to get Eskimos back in the game
It is quite apparent the Eskimo team will not achieve the potential of their great quarterback with the current set-up.
The predictability of their offence is one shortcoming. An offensive co-ordinator with imagination is badly needed; Paul LaPolice, we need you.
The punting situation is atrocious. The opponents’ receivers habitually return the ball at least 20 yards before our tacklers can get downfield. We need a punter who can achieve an average of 50 yards, a hang time of six seconds, -
Opinion: Selling off oil fast as we can isn't an energy plan
Like it or not, we need to plan for a major transition over the coming decades from our reliance on fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Fossil fuels are the major source of energy for Canadians and people around the world (providing 85 per cent of global primary energy in 2017). But hydrocarbons — oil, gas and coal — unfortunately also have major environmental impacts from both extraction and combustion.
Given this reality, Canada’s policy of selling off its remaining non-renewab -
Keith Gerein: Rise of political action committees a troubling trend for Alberta politics
Autumn Sundays at my house are often spent muttering obscenities and shaking my fist at the television.
I take part in a couple of fantasy football leagues with other journalists, which means I get far too invested in the fortunes of mediocre tight ends who otherwise offer nothing to my daily well-being.
Amid my episodes of rage last Sunday, I was surprised to see an image of Premier Rachel Notley appear on the screen during a break in the game.
“The NDP are punishing Alberta’s famil -

It's time to let Bouch loose on the top Edmonton Oilers power play
Oscar Klefbom not getting it done as power play quarterback so change is advisable
There are two ways to look at the Edmonton Oilers power play.
First, Edmonton is seventh overall in power play efficiency in the National Hockey League, after being 31st last year, clipping along at a stellar 28 per cent conversion rate, five goals on 18 power play attempts. So, you know, shut up with your weak power play criticisms.
It’s not broke. It does not need fixing.

One year as chief justice: Mary Moreau reflects on what's ahead
The province’s superior court chief justice said her first year in the post was “hectic” while she has attempted to tackle a case backlog that she says keeps her up at night.
“We are actively looking at what we as a court can do on the ground, creatively, to get through this difficult time — the resource challenges that we have,” Chief Justice Mary Moreau said Monday, speaking to media about one year after she was appointed to the top spot on the Court of Quee -

Edmonton's End of the World project moving forward
The City of Edmonton details the rebuilding of a controversial river-view site known as the End of the World.

Chief Justice Mary Moreau reflects on hectic first year and what's ahead
Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Mary Moreau is marking her one-year anniversary on the job, discussing what the first year was like and what the next year holds.

End of the World: City details rebuild of controversial river-view site
Two decades ago, it was the site of bitter standoffs between Riverbend commuters and parkland protectors.
By early 2019, the site of the once-divisive Keillor Road will become Keillor Point, a safe and city-sanctioned lookout high above the North Saskatchewan River valley.
“We’re really happy that it’s now going to be a spot where families can come, visitors can come, and enjoy the river and the view,” said Roger Laing, chairman of the Belgravia Community League’s K -
World-renowned autism 'translator' emphasizes talent over diagnosis at Edmonton conference
Autism expert Tony Attwood believes people with the neurological condition have talents to be tapped and he hopes that message spreads from the talk he gave to more than 300 people at the Edmonton Expo Centre Monday morning.
