A debate over free public transit at council Wednesday exposed just how differently council members see the heavy blue buses running down Edmonton streets.
Coun. Tony Caterina said transit is certainly not an essential service like police or fire.
It “does not even come close to being identified as an essential service,” said Caterina, speaking against a motion from Coun. Aaron Paquette to study the economic impact of transit and review the fare structure.

It's just like Paris, but in Edmonton, as Café Linnea launches prix fixe menu
It’s long been a dream of Cafe Linnea co-owner, Garner Beggs, to bring a full-on, fixed price menu to the west-central eatery.
Now, the dream appears on the table starting Friday, Oct. 12.
“I’m really excited about it,” says Garner, who has organized the change along with the restaurant’s head chef/co-owner, Kelsey Johnson.
The new menu reflects what is a common feature of the classic bistro in France, where two- and three-course, standard-priced menus are a treat f -
Priest with ties to Edmonton, Calgary faces sexual misconduct allegations
A Catholic priest who has worked in both Edmonton and Calgary has been removed from his duties in the wake of sexual misconduct claims against him from a minor and an adult in Vancouver.
The allegations against Father Peter Hung Cong Tran stem from his time as associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Vancouver between 1998 and 2003, Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith said Wednesday at a news conference.
Congregations in Alberta were alerted to the allegations over the weekend, Smith said, but did -
Review: Better off dead? In Dreams brings 'holographic' Roy Orbison back to the stage
One of my great fears reviewing concerts over the years is that the singer will get up on stage, play a few songs, and promptly fall over dead.
Besides the intrinsic horror of the situation — imagine the crowd reaction — that’d be a very bad night, trying to cough up a story on deadline: nosing around the panicked, possibly evasive event coordinators to verify we just saw what we think we did, getting quotes from shell-shocked fans … look, man, I just wanted to -

David Staples: One-two punch hammers city council's plan to increase taxes
A devastating one-two punch is hammering Edmonton city council’s plan to keep raising property taxes.

Small samples are unfortunately a part of the formula for this edition of the Edmonton Oilers
“Small sample”.
It is a valuable phrase. It’s a sage reminder that snapshots in time are not always what they appear to be. Ask a pollster, for example, and they will hand you a manual full of percentages and probabilities based on sample sizes. I use the “small sample” reservation often when writing about sports because like politics, you need enough data to be reasonably sure that what you are seeing is in fact…fact.

St. Bernard dogs up for adoption need to stay together
Three adult St. Bernard dogs were put up for adoption at the Edmonton Humane Society Tuesday.
