Edmonton has officially unfurled another 16 kilometres of river valley trails.
On Friday, Coun. Aaron Paquette and Brent Collingwood, River Valley Alliance (RVA) executive director, opened the completed East End Trails Project in Edmonton’s northeast.
The $8.5-million asphalt and gravel trails were funded in partnership with the City of Edmonton, River Valley Alliance, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada.

Fitness column: Weight training key to greater gains
The cold autumn winds are upon us, which means if you left your exercise progress on a summer patio somewhere it’s time to recommit.
This may surprise some in the treadmill crowd, but cardio may not be the magic cure-all they think it is. In fact, some forms of cardio may be aversely affecting your gains.
Sure, exercise like walking and running is affordable and accessible, but it simply may not be the right ingredient if your focus is weight loss, strength or shape. (In fact, if your goal -
Suspicious death: Missing woman's body found in river near St. Paul
The case of a woman missing since late September has been deemed suspicious after her body was recovered from the North Saskatchewan River southwest of St. Paul, say RCMP.
Twenty-five-year-old Lindsay Marie Jackson’s body was found in the North Saskatchewan River near Duvernay, about 53 kilometres southwest of St. Paul, on Wednesday, said police in a Friday release. The RCMP major crimes unit has taken over the investigation.
Jackson, from Saddle Lake Cree Nation, was last seen at a h -

A driver of a tour bus was struck and killed be her own vehicle in the Columbia Icefield parking lot near Jasper on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to the parking lot crash about 1:15 p.m. after the 52-year-old woman was hit, police said Friday.
STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched but she died at the scene.
Witnesses told Mounties that the bus also struck four parked vehicles before it came to rest.
No other people were injured and the investigation is continuing. -

He participated, he admits, in causing 17-year-old Ashton Cardinal’s death.
“I wish I can take back that night and not be there,” Terence Christopher Lewis told the writer assigned to prepare a Gladue report on his Indigenous background that would be submitted to a judge who would decide his fate.

Cam Talbot moving up to where he needs to be in Edmonton Oilers power rankings
How simple is the Oilers season? On Dec. 1, if Connor McDavid is leading the league in scoring and Cam Talbot has a save percentage higher than .920, I suspect all Oilers fans will be smiling.
That .920+ save percentage would indicate not just a return to form for Talbot, but also an indication that the Oilers’ defence is in better shape. For three seasons now I’ve done power rankings of the Oilers players. Talbot slipped from second overall on a strong team in 2016-17 to seventh over -
Edmonton police bust vehicle VIN cloning scam, recover $500,000 in property
A man who scrimped and saved $20,000 to buy himself a new truck is now making payments on a vehicle he no longer owns, after it was caught up in a vehicle cloning operation busted by city police.
Members of the city police auto theft unit seized the truck Wednesday after a five-week probe into a sophisticated organized crime ring that resulted in three arrests, 16 charges, and the seizure of close to $500,000 in stolen property and drugs.
“We are talking about an organized group of hi -
Single-vehicle rollover kills eastern Alberta man
A man from the eastern Alberta town of Willingdon was killed in a single vehicle rollover on Wednesday.
Mounties said the crash happened at around 4 p.m. on Range Road 152 just south of the small hamlet located about 100 km east of Edmonton.
Investigators believe the 36-year-old driver of the SUV was heading north when it rolled into the ditch.
Two Hills RCMP continue to investigate. -
Man exposes genitals to woman walking alone near St. Albert school
A man who exposed his genitals to a woman near a school in St. Albert late last week is being sought by Mounties.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 the woman was walking south on Cunningham Road towards Leo Nickerson School when a man coming from the direction of a nearby playground and exposed himself, Mounties said Thursday.
The woman left the area and reported it to police.
The man is about five-foot-five and was wearing dark clothing at the time. -
Edmonton weather: Chilly, windy, but sunny and no snow. So we'll take it.
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure -0.3 C with 10 km/h winds out of the northwest contributing to a -4 windchill.
What happened? I looked at the weekend forecast yesterday and it was nothing but sunshine — 10 C Saturday and 11 C Sunday — but 24 hours later the darn thing has flipped its lid with forecasters calling for a mix of sun and cloud and 10 C Saturday (not so bad) and 8 C and c -
Opinion: Numbers show this edition of Oilers a vastly different team
The Edmonton Oilers season starts today, finally.
The past seven years I’ve watched 500 Oilers games, studied hockey analytics, and written opinions in the Edmonton Journal. Along the way, I’ve raised questions: What are the best, most meaningful analytics? What accounts for last year’s disappointing season? Why did some star players struggle? How should players be graded and evaluated? How should they practise and develop? And, what matters most: athletic ability or opportunit -
Friday's letters: Canada gains thoughtful Senator
Congratulations to Paula Simons on her appointment to Canada’s Senate.
Edmonton Journal readers will be quite familiar with her columns, and while we may not always have agreed with her, her arguments were always thoughtful and well-reasoned.
Thoughtfulness and an ability for good reasoning are good attributes for somebody representing Alberta and Edmonton in our chamber of sober second thought.
Well done, Paula Simons. The Edmonton Journal’s and its readers’ loss is Canada&rsq -
Editorial: Heal our hospitals
That Alberta hospitals spend large amounts of money comes as little surprise given the high cost of health care.
But the devil is in the details and it took the digging of Edmonton Journal reporter Keith Gerein in an in-depth investigation and a follow-up piece to reveal that it’s not just a case of hospitals being expensive facilities to operate by nature of their mission to heal the sick.
It’s worse; Alberta’s hospitals are set up to overspend, then to reset and repeat. They& -

New Metro Line LRT signalling system ready to go today: Thales Canada
Thales Canada officials say they’re ready today to flip the switch on a new signalling system that would restore Edmonton’s LRT network to proper frequency.
There’s just one problem. The city isn’t convinced.

David Staples: Amarjeet Sohi faces hard questions about failing pipelines
I have no end of questions about why it’s now impossible for private business to build a pipeline in Canada so I caught up with Amarjeet Sohi for some answers.
Sohi, the former Edmonton city councillor, current MP for Edmonton Mill Woods and federal minister of natural resources, takes my call from B.C., where he’s back meeting with Indigenous groups about the sickly Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project, which is on its tenth or eleventh life.
Albertans, meanwhile, are boil -

Inner-city Thanksgiving: Early holiday meal at Bissell Centre's new space
Bissell Centre patrons gathered for an early Thanksgiving meal in the agency’s new community space Thursday.
The early holiday dinner — served up at the 10530 96 St. location — for up to 500 people aims to help those in the inner-city community cope with loneliness and the colder temperatures this time of year.
“Thanksgiving is a time where many of us gather with our families and friends to share a meal and celebrate the many good things in our lives,” says Gary St. -

Spirit names: Mayor, city manager, branch manager honoured as part of reconciliation
