• Vegan trend setter Kanu Café launches grand opening weekend Sept. 21

Fans of plant-based foods have their mouths set for coconut cream pie (without the cream) as Kanu Café opens to the public on Sunday, Sept. 23.
The restaurant, with American plant-based chef Matthew Kenney at the helm, avoids animal products (though they will have cream for coffee). The concept comes to Canada via Sherry Schluessel, the Calgary-based developer who owns ProCura Real Estate Services along with her husband, George Schluessel. The restaurant is in the Mayfair (owned by ProCur

A protest against a hate demonstration planned for Tuesday night has been cancelled due to safety concerns, but a community organizer said a broader event against racism is in the works for late September.
Community members originally intended a direct counter to an event publicized by the Edmonton Chapter of Soldiers of Odin, a hate group rooted in the far-right. The Soldiers’ announced a Sept. 11 “candlelight vigil” at the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre via a F
  • Concern grows over Darnell Nurse contract status as Oilers main training camp nears

All summer long the assumption has been that it’s a matter of time for the Edmonton Oilers to come to terms with Darnell Nurse on a contract extension.
The 23-year-old rearguard completed his Entry Level Contract this past season, and became a Restricted Free Agent on July 01. The player had no arbitration rights and seemed unlikely to be subject to an offer sheet, an option which has gone out of style for reasons discussed in this post I wrote on the player six weeks ago. A Calgary-based construction firm formerly responsible for the $763-million Grande Prairie Regional Hospital project says it is “deeply disappointed” with the provincial government’s actions and is pursuing a claim for damages.

  • Don Iveson calls for Edmonton suburbs to pay more in next budget

Homeowners moving into Edmonton’s new suburbs will be asked to pay more for fire stations and facilities such as the Lewis Farms Recreation Centre in this upcoming budget, Mayor Don Iveson said Tuesday.
He laid out the five principals he’ll bring to this fall’s budget debate and said Edmonton’s existing business owners and residents can’t be asked to cover the $1 billion it would take to provide services for the new areas under construction.

  • If we squint hard at the Edmonton Oilers, it's easy to see a playoff team in 2018-19

TSN’s Bob McKenzie is usually the most moderate and considered of hockey commentator, so his dark comments about the Edmonton Oilers were a departure from that norm.
But is the sky really falling on the Edmonton Oilers?
To refresh your memory, here is the key point made by McKenzie in his pre-season look at the Oilers of 2018-19: “I think the way most people look at it, every year you have a Connor McDavid-led team that misses the playoffs that is a crime against hockey humanity. I t

  • Tuesday's letters: Single-sheet rinks too valuable to cut

Before the City of Edmonton seriously considers targeting single-sheet rinks and swimming pools in budget cuts, I expect to see a public document with revenues, expenditures and utilization released.
The city also needs to be transparent in addressing the following:
Parents with children in minor hockey to adults in recreation leagues know all too well the scarcity of indoor ice once hockey season begins. This ice is not free, and is a revenue generator. Figure skating clubs offering learn-to-sk
  • Opinion: Don't let legalized pot renormalize smoking

When smoking was prohibited in all indoor public places in Edmonton 13 years ago, I mistakenly thought that our work was done in protecting children and youth from public exposure to tobacco smoke.
The Edmonton indoor smoking ban was followed by indoor smoking bans in other cities and ultimately by the Alberta government which implemented a provincewide ban in 2008.
Smoking bans have improved the quality of life for many Albertans, especially those with asthma, allergies, heart disease and other
