City of St. Albert to launch chemical treatment program to rid lake of goldfish
The City of St. Albert plans to scale back the number of goldfish swimming in a local lake through a chemical treatment program.
Starting Tuesday, rotenone will be used in Lacombe Lake Park to poison unwanted goldfish.
The naturally occurring compound comes from the roots of tropical plants and is not harmful to humans, pets, wildlife or vegetation, said the city.
Asian goldfish are an invasive species that were illegally introduced to Alberta waters, according to Environment and Parks. The -
Review: ESO delights Hawrelak Park crowds at Symphony Under the Sky
In the old Norse tales there is squirrel called Ratatoskr, who scurries up and down the trunk of the great world-tree of life, delivering messages between the eagle who lives at the top of the tree and the dragon who lives in its roots.
Ratatoskr’s first cousin had its own moment in the spotlight on Friday, at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s traditional Friday classical music concert in the Symphony Under the Sky festival at Hawrelak Park. There it was, darting vertically down the -
Split decision at Court of Appeal weighs Jordan rule for young offenders
The case of a young offender who was convicted of assaulting a 16-year-old with a box cutter has raised questions about what constitutes a reasonable trial delay for minors, leading to a split decision from the Alberta Court of Appeal.
It’s the first time an appellate court in Canada has considered how the Jordan decision would be applied to young offenders, wrote Justice Barbara Veldhuis in her dissenting opinion.
The Supreme Court of Canada’s 2016 Jordan decision outlined reas -
Saturday's letters: Supply management benefits consumers
Alberta recently held Open Farm Days where the public was invited to visit local farms to see first-hand agricultural production in Alberta.
I had the privilege of visiting a dairy farm and a grain farm. I witnessed first-hand how our raw food products are grown and raised, and also how the products are distributed. In witnessing the production of milk, in particular, it became quite apparent that supply management works.
It works for the producer and for the consumer. Dairy and poultry prices i -
Opinion: Stop being scared and get to know a newcomer
As headlines mistakenly scream about a refugee crisis in Canada, as we hear claims that diversity is a threat to Canada and as alt-right anti-immigrant groups try to recruit the homeless at a Labour Day event in Edmonton, we seem to be in a constant state of fear.
Why? What happened? Canadians weren’t afraid when Czech and Hungarian refugees flooded here in the 1950s and ’60s or when refugees came by the thousands from Uganda and Vietnam in the 1970s.

Opportunity knocking already for Oilers' #2 prospect Kailer Yamamoto
2018 Edmonton Oilers prospects#2 Kailer Yamamoto
Previously: #1 in 2017
Funny thing about the Edmonton Oilers, they shake the bushes all around the hockey world for prospective young talent, but by far the most bountiful fruit is picked from a reliable old source, the Canadian Hockey League.
While that general statement extends to players at all positions, today we’ll focus up front. We complete our roll-out of young forwards in discussing the organization’s #2 prospect, right winger -

Finance minister touts shrinking deficit in fiscal update
Withdrawing from the federal climate change plan amid suspended construction on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion won’t affect Alberta’s bottom line this year, says Finance Minister Joe Ceci, touting a fiscal update that included a $1-billion deficit reduction
The first-quarter update released Friday projected Alberta’s deficit to fall by $1 billion in 2018-19, a number mainly attributed to resource revenue brought about by higher than expected oil prices and a low U.S.-Can -

Press Gallery podcast #241: The So Long, Farewell edition
As the sun sets on another Alberta summer, the Press Gallery panel looks back on a highly eventful week that could foreshadow some endings for both politicians and projects.
The fate of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is now certainly in doubt following a stunning Federal Court of Appeal decision that quashes the project’s approval. That, in turn, could spell goodbye to Premier Rachel Notley’s NDP government, which is already facing a difficult road to re-election -
104 Street warehouse district site of proposed tower
A mix of condos, retail space and a hotel is planned for the current home of the Blue Plate Diner and an adjacent parking lot on 104 Street that could also have an impact on the weekly farmers market during the building process.
The plans for the 112-metre building by developer Urban Capital and Edmonton-based Limak Investments outline a 13-storey hotel and 17 storeys of residential condo units. The first three floors will be geared toward retail space facing 104 Street.

'Puzzling' and 'childish': Environmental groups chide Notley for pulling out of federal climate plan following Trans Mountain ruling
Environmental groups are chastising the Alberta NDP for pulling out of the pan-Canadian climate change plan in the aftermath of a massive blow to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
