Withdrawing from the federal climate change plan amid suspended construction on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion won’t affect Alberta’s bottom line this year, says Finance Minister Joe Ceci, touting a fiscal update that included a $1-billion deficit reduction.
But United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney said the NDP is minimizing the fallout from a Thursday court ruling that quashed the approval of the pipeline expansion project.

Edmonton firefighters mourn off-duty death of 29-year-old colleague
Edmonton firefighters are in mourning after the death of a colleague.
A funeral will be held Saturday for Marc Renaud, who died while off-duty last Sunday, according to a city news release. He was 29 years old.
The Alberta Fire Fighters Association, which represents around 4,000 professional firefighters in the province, offered condolences in a social media post Monday.
Renaud started work with the Edmonton Fire Rescue Service on Sept. 1, 2011. He worked at two of the city’s busiest -

Holy carp: 11-year-old nets giant koi in St. Albert lake

It's kind of like an amazing dream coming to life. Your adorable little goldfish grows into a giant, chasing you around a pond. Only in this case, 11-year-old Luke Hebb wasn't dreaming when he fished a 16-pound koi out of Lacombe Lake in St. Albert ... -
Man acquitted of murder in Whyte Avenue shooting after 'complicated and messy' trial
A man accused of first-degree murder in a fatal shooting outside a Whyte Avenue nightclub was “elated” at being found not guilty on Friday, his lawyer said.
Arman Dhillon, 23, was acquitted of all charges he faced in relation to a shooting that resulted in the death of Amin Mohammed Abdullahi, 30.
Abdullahi died in hospital after being shot multiple times outside the Tribute Lounge at 8111 105 St. on March 20, 2016. His brother, Bilal Abdullahi, was also shot, but survived with -
Mom column: Booze vs. pot and the parenting double-standard
Recently in my neighbourhood Facebook group, I noticed a post by a perturbed resident. She was concerned about a cannabis retailer operating on the same street as a daycare and posed the question: How did the rest of the neighbourhood feel about it?
I was impressed by how thoughtful the ensuing commentary was. Equal parts “Well, this is really no different from a liquor store” and “If we don’t want these types of businesses filling up the neighbourhood we must support the -
Garden Hits & Myths: Hardy hydrangeas provide late summer colour
In early September, there aren’t any flowering shrubs that are showier than hydrangeas. In fact, given that some hydrangea flowers are wider than the a good-sized human foot is long, ostentatious might just be the best word to describe them. Showy or ostentatious? I figure if you’ve got it, flaunt it.
A bit of science
There are two species of hydrangea that grow well in our region. The first is the ‘smooth’ hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) and the other is the ‘pan -
Alberta fiscal update: Trans Mountain halt won't affect bottom line, Ceci 'pleased' with shrinking deficit
Withdrawing from the federal climate change plan amid suspended construction on the Trans mountain pipeline won’t affect Alberta’s bottom line this year, according to the latest provincial financial update released Friday.
The first quarter update projected Alberta’s deficit to fall by $1 billion in 2018-19, a number mainly attributed to resource revenue brought about by higher than expected oil prices and a low U.S.-Canada exchange rate.
“I am pleased with these results, -
'I had gone beyond a dad body': Edmonton bodybuilder sculpts a new look in real-life makeover at 62-years-old
Regular doses of inspiration is as important to overall health as good hydration and fresh vegetables. That’s why stories of folks like Rick Newcombe must be circulated.
In July, the local 62-year-old won a bronze medal at the Canadian National Championships, held in Quebec and hosted by the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation. That’s a laudable feat in itself, but even more impressive when you consider that Newcombe has only pursued bodybuilding for the last three years.

More U.S. nonsense on McDavid in Edmonton: "It's such a shame for the game that this guy is in Edmonton"
This in from Buffalo, New York sports radio host Joe DiBiase of WGR550, his take that Connor McDavid should not be with the Edmonton Oilers for the good of the game.
On Thursday, DiBiase tweeted out the video of McDavid rapidly stickhandling through the pucks at the BioSteel camp and noted: “It’s such a shame for the game that this guy is in Edmonton.”
At once, Edmonton Oilers fans and bloggers had some questions for DiBiase in regards to this hot take, including Jeff Champman -
Storm clouds on horizon for Edmonton's economy following Trans Mountain pipeline ruling
The court decision quashing approval for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion could have serious long-term implications for the Edmonton economy, the chief city economist says.
“Over the next 12 to 24 months, it … will negatively impact energy, project management, manufacturing, logistics,” John Rose says.
“But it’s not going to be dramatic. If the project is scrapped, that will curtail investment in energy, which will be bad for the fiscal position of the provinc -
'I am angry': Premier Notley reacts to Trans Mountain pipeline expansion decision

Edmonton weather: It's the unofficial last day of summer. Hold me.
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measure 5.9 C with 9 km/h winds out of the southwest.
It’s August 31 and it’s all over. In a blink of an eye, summer has all but faded away. Oh sure we might get a stretch of nice weather in September, and it might even reach 30 C again, because it’s Alberta and this place is straight up bonkers when it comes to swings in weather patterns. But it’ -
Opinion: Canada must seize moment to get pharmacare right
Patricia is a 61-year-old woman who takes medication for some fairly common health issues including arthritis, high cholesterol, a thyroid condition and chronic pain management. She retired three years ago after a 35-year career in a unionized job with prescription drug coverage.
In retirement, Patricia’s drug coverage has a cap of $2,000 per year, so her coverage maxes out just before Thanksgiving. Since she is not yet a senior, she isn’t eligible for government assistance. Patricia -
Friday's letters: More than docks needed to enhance river
Re. “Amenities will boost river use,” Editorial, Aug. 24
As a long time member of the Edmonton paddling community, I would like to thank The Edmonton Journal for highlighting and extolling our soon-to-be new and redeveloped docks and launches.
You are correct that these facilities should assist more Edmontonians to take advantage of our greatest natural recreation resource, our river and river valley.
But just docks and launches are not enough; my fellow citizens have expressed in at -
David Staples: Our river valley, miles of beauty but hardly a place to pee
How will we know that we’ve succeeded in making the most out of our river valley?
Two key signals will tell the story. First, no matter where you are in the valley you’ll be able to find a place within one or two kilometres to get something to eat and drink. Second, and in a related matter, no matter where you are in the valley within one or two kilometres you’ll be able to find a washroom.
Right now large tracts of the river valley are restaurant-free and washroom-free zones. -
Alberta government to provide financial update on heels of Trans Mountain bombshell
The Alberta government will provide a financial update Friday on the heels of a stunning court ruling that threw the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion into uncertainty.
The NDP budget unveiled in March included the pipeline in a plan to balance the books.
“We have the opportunity always to correct our budget forecast and do that at quarterly updates over the next year,” said Finance Minister Joe Ceci at the time.
On Thursday, the Federal Court of Appeal said Ottawa relied on a f -

It's time for Oilers' #3 prospect Kirill “the Thrill” Maksimov to get the recognition he deserves, says Sean Patrick Ryan
2018 Edmonton Oilers prospects#3 Kirill Maksimov
by Sean Patrick Ryan
Previously: #16 in 2017
If as an Oilers fan you are not familiar with the name Kirill Maksimov – you should be. The fifth round pick of the 2017 draft has had a heckuva OHL career so far and it’s just going to get better. Still left out of a lot of fans Top Oilers Prospects mentions, “Maksi” is a legit NHL prospect who is so much better than what most people think.

'A hideously expensive white elephant': Essential quotes on the quashing of the Trans Mountain pipeline approval
It’s been a busy day as politicians and pundits react to the Federal Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn Ottawa’s approval of the contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
There’s a lot to unpack, but here’s a rundown of some of the more notable reactions to the big news.

Graham Thomson: Rachel Notley beyond angry at Trans Mountain pipeline ruling
Rachel Notley says she is angry.
That’s an understatement.
When it comes to Thursday’s court decision revoking approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline project, she is furious.
“Alberta has done everything right and we have been let down,” she said during a special live-TV news conference Thursday aimed at the supper-hour newscasts. Like many in Alberta, Notley was caught completely by surprise and was pointing a finger of blame in many directions.

City aims to charge developer for damage to Mill Creek shared path: official
A developer building a house in the middle of the Mill Creek Ravine created ruts in the shared-use path and will be required to pay for it, say city officials.
City crews were out Thursday patching the asphalt path. They’ll check on it repeatedly while heavy construction continues, said city general supervisor Clarence Wong. If local residents continue to have issues, “they can let us know through 311 and we’ll be out there to the best of our ability.”

Culture of accountability at city hall finally taking hold: city auditor
Edmonton’s city auditor added a silver lining to his latest critique involving an investigation into fraud allegations among city contractors that ended after time left the trail cold.
In this case, auditor David Wiun was trying to investigate allegations city officials knew about and failed to report three years ago. But he said if the same thing were happening today, he’s convinced he would get the call on time.
