• No penguin burgers on the menu, as Antarctica makes special debut at Heritage Days

New additions to the Heritage Days roster are always a top draw at the annual summer festival, with Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal, Cameroon and others making their inaugural showing this year.
But another place on Earth is also being represented for the first time, a land claimed by no nation — as per various international treaties.
Local businessman Darryl Weflen has brought Antarctica to Hawrelak Park this year, showcasing the equipment and modified truck of his Xpedition 90X, the fi

  • Alberta to buy ballistic body armour for truck safety recruits

The Alberta government is buying nearly two dozen ballistic body armour vests for new recruits joining the team that conducts truck inspections.
While not a job normally associated with a need for custom-fit and made-to-measure bullet proof vests, the purchases will be used to protect 14 new recruits who will begin jobs this fall with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch.
After graduating from basic training on Aug. 2, the recruits are due to spend three months in the field training as well
  • Big Valley Jamboree isn't about the music for some attendees

Dressed in a cowboy hat and plaid shirt, 32-year-old Alfred Grenier has been coming to the Big Valley Jamboree for the last 12 years.
For him, it doesn’t matter which artists are playing.
“I don’t even look at the docket,” he said as he waited for food in the dining area early Friday afternoon.
Grenier said he keeps coming to the Camrose country music festival from Edmonton for the positive environment. There with his sister, brother-in-law and other friends, he wil

  • The Dog Days of August means Edmonton Oilers hockey is just around the corner: 9 Things

Professional hockey players are, in some ways, not a whole lot different than anyone else. They work most of the year. And while they may take a couple weeks to rest & relax at the lake (or wherever) in the Summer they never really stop training.
I vividly remember my cousin Jim Leavins (Red Wings, Rangers) coming home after the season for a few weeks. But even then, you could find him up early every morning, running sprints on the otherwise abandoned high school track.
    Here, then, are some
  • Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa a growing presence at Heritage Days

Freshly-squeezed hibiscus flower juice, grilled beef skewers and colourful fabrics in the Cote d’Ivoire pavilion at Hawrelak Park are a “sign of hope” for the community.
Cote d’Ivoire’s full pavilion is one of the new additions to the Edmonton Heritage Festival this year. For the past two years, Cote d’Ivoire was in a smaller tent that couldn’t sell food — this year, it’s a “big party.”
“We want to be part of the story

  • Edmonton homicide lull: 18 killings compared with 33 this time last year

Edmonton has recorded 18 homicides to date, drastically down from last year’s 33 at this time.
The year-to-year drop in homicides is a reflection of how violent the first nine months of 2017 were, with 39 slayings recorded. That’s more killings than during the same time span in 2011, the city’s record-breaking year of 48 homicides.
The last three months of 2017, however, were relatively peaceful. Three homicides were recorded during that period, making it one of the city&r
