• Three 124 Street galleries celebrating women artists in rare joint show

Gallery owners Angela Bugera, Rachel Bouchard and Heather Hamel couldn’t help but notice something as they tried to energize the 124 Street exhibition spaces surrounding them. There’d been an open invite down the street, but let’s face it — everyone needs a 36-hour day these days, right? Even Bear Claw Gallery, owned by Bugera’s sister, was tied up.
“In the end,” Bugera said, “Heather, Rachel and I were the only ones at the table. We
  • Accidental Beach back, but officials advise against swimming in river

Water quality varies so widely in the waters off Accidental Beach that it can be hard to tell when it’s safe to swim.
The simplest solution, says a senior health official: don’t.
City and Alberta Health Services officials warned the public about risks associated with Accidental Beach Friday, as the beach emerged from the North Saskatchewan River ahead of the long weekend.
While the beach can be enjoyed safely, officials said, there are debris hazards and contaminants in the water tha

  • Opinion: Federal Indigenous rights framework more like a cage

The Trudeau government is committed to table legislation on a Recognition of Rights Framework for Indigenous rights this fall. While not yet finalized, the initial drafts are not encouraging. Beware of federal politicians bearing beads and trinkets. This framework is not emancipatory and despite effusive press releases from the prime minister, has nothing to do with reconciliation.
The feds are proposing a framework that functions like a cage, containing Indigenous nations and governments within
  • Friday's letters: Celebrate Alberta Day this weekend

I am writing to you today to suggest that we change the name of the August long weekend from Heritage Day/Civic Holiday to Alberta Day Long Weekend, a common name across the province.
It would be a long weekend to celebrate and focus on all of the great summer activities that make Alberta summers unique and special, much like Family Day now is a winter tradition started by Alberta’s then-premier Don Getty and has been adopted across most of the country.
The August long weekend can then be
