  • On Darnell Nurse and the "threat" of an offer sheet

For the second year in a row, July is turning to August while a significant piece of Edmonton Oilers’ young core remains unsigned and, theoretically at least, available to the highest bidder.
Last year it was Leon Draisaitl who remained a Restricted Free Agent until mid-August before ultimately returning to the fold by signing a maximum-term, big-money contract with the Oilers. This year it’s Darnell Nurse who is the last white space on an Oilers’ roster which has gradually col

  • Tuesday's letters: Davies gives back to adopted home

I’m not really a soccer fan, but I love the story of Alphonso Davies and enjoy reading coverage by Paula Simons and Terry Jones. About 20 years ago, a similar Alberta teen phenomenon was signed by the same German team Bayern Munich, a Calgarian by the name of Owen Hargreaves.
Unlike Davies, Hargreaves was born in Calgary to British parents, and not in a refugee camp. Like Davies, Hargreaves got his start in the “beautiful game” with his hometown’s local grassroots soccer
  • Opinion: Everyone can help save Alberta's bats

Alberta has more than just oil and gas underground — it also has the largest bat hibernation site ever found in the boreal forest in Western Canada. Hundreds of bats hibernate in a muddy cave carved out of bedrock by weak sulphuric acid northeast of Edmonton. It may not sound like the most luxurious living space, but for now it is safe. It may not be for much longer.
A bat-killing fungal disease called white-nose syndrome (WNS) has been steadily marching west. Last spring, it showed up for

  • Paula Simons: All roads lead to Hawrelak Park as Edmonton Heritage Festival creates new routes to celebrate old roots

I love the Edmonton Heritage Festival with all my heart and soul.
I’m not alone. And that’s the challenge. Last year, the festival hit peak attendance on a sunny Sunday, wedged between two rainy days.
Edmonton Transit had more than 260 buses shuttling people to and from Hawrelak. The bike paddocks were filled to overflowing. On top of that, there were cars, vans and trucks taking supplies in and out of the park. There were taxis and pedestrians. And everything snarled. Some park-and-

  • Graham Thomson: A good-news column that's better late than never

This column is 10 days late. My apologies.
This is the column I intended to write for July 21 — a story about some good news for Alberta.
The Japanese government lifted its embargo against Canadian wheat.
Yes, that news is more than 10 days out of date.
But when I heard Japan was once again buying Alberta wheat I fully intended to write a column.
After all, when the ban was imposed in June, the Journal posted a front-page story headlined: Japan blocks Canadian wheat.
    This was a big story.
