• Drug operation shut down by EPS

Thousands of deadly fentanyl pills, cocaine, $70,000 and stolen guns have been seized after a four-month investigation by the city police gang unit.
Four people, all from Edmonton, are collectively facing more than 50 charges after Edmonton Gang and Drug Enforcement (EDGE) officers executed search warrants June 20 at three south Edmonton homes and three vehicles.
And two of those vehicles — a Dodge truck and an Acura sedan — contained hidden compartments stuffed with an assortment of
  • Who owns the street? Parking flap puts the brakes on new Forest Heights deli

A parking flare-up around a proposed neighbourhood deli in Forest Heights is pitting a local business owner against a street full of now-frustrated residents.
Visitors to the popular neighbourhood pub Cartago are already plugging up residential streets, neighbours say, and now Cartago’s Katy Ingraham wants to open a cafe/deli next door.
Neighbours complained to the city. The city used that to deny a permit. Cartago is fighting to overturn the ruling at the subdivision and development appea

Now, the group has donated native wildflowers and shrubs for community gardens to add to their plots. In July and August, a winner will be randomly chosen to receive a free package of native plants, including edibles such as raspberries, Saskatoon
  • Environmental appeal on Domtar lands delayed after board chairman quits case

An Environmental Appeals Board hearing to resolve a long dispute over the former Domtar industrial lands in northeast Edmonton has been delayed at least one month to deal with issues stemming from the recusal of the board chairman.
Chairman Alex MacWilliam, an environmental lawyer at Dentons Canada LLP, removed himself from the case after learning earlier this month that his firm’s Montreal office had been hired by Domtar on an unrelated matter, appeals board spokesman Gilbert Van Nes said

Search warrants at locations in Edmonton and Sylvan Lake were executed July 19 by Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) officers with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).

  • Fire rescue crews douse Anthony Henday vehicle blaze

A vehicle fire on Anthony Henday Drive slowed traffic Tuesday morning but no one was injured, say officials.
Rubberneckers got an eyeful when the vehicle — stopped on the Henday northbound at Stony Plain Road — burst into large orange flames just before noon.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 11:26 a.m., arriving at 11:31 a.m., said Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman Maya Filipovic.
Two responding crews quickly doused the blaze.

The corner of 104 Street and 102 Avenue in the heart of downtown Edmonton has been a problem. For several years, that particular corner — a heritage space known as the Metals Limited Building — has been home to an ever-changing assortment of restaurants unable to make a go of it.
Was it the size of the restaurant? (Huge.) The design? (Its front door was particularly unwelcoming.) Or the operators? (Tough call, but hard to ignore.)
Now, three young restaurant industry professionals ha

  • Tuesday's letters: Cloudy future for Re/Max Field

Re. “The Prospects prosper on field and at the gate,” July 18
Great to read about the recent successes of the Edmonton Prospects. The games are fun, affordable and perfectly located. Re/Max Field is a great facility. Dark clouds loom, however. A quick scan of the city’s River Crossing Vision document about the Rossdale re-development scheme makes no mention of enjoying a baseball game in the area.
It is a gobsmacking failure of imagination to consider the ball park an impedimen
  • Opinion: New Alberta electricity market could mean higher rates

Alberta electricity consumers should be aware that the Alberta government’s plan to introduce a capacity market for electricity by November 2021 is likely to hurt residential and business consumers and raise average customer bills by 12 per cent to 15 per cent.
Opposition to the changes has been muted because of the complexity of the process, which is indeed troubling. While the government’s goal of introducing renewable sources of power is commendable, the implementation of the poli

Last Thursday, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman unveiled plans not to renovate the cramped, old ER but to build a whole new one on the far west side of the hospital, just across the street from West Edmonton Mall.
The new emergency will have room for 66 treatment beds, instead of the current 32.
It will have six ambulance bays, instead of four.
It will be more than twice as large as the current

  • Flags delayed: Gesture of reconciliation waits for reconstruction at city hall

It was meant to be a grand gesture of reconciliation — Metis and Treaty 6 flags flying permanently beside Edmonton’s flag in its most prominent central square.
It’s still coming, say city officials, 16 months after a vote by city council to make it happen.
Edmonton will now raise the flags in spring 2019, following the first $13-million phase of construction around city hall. Construction crews cut down trees and started pulling up flagstones last week to prepare the site for t
  • Thomson: Edmonton is 'ground zero' for Kenney

Look out Edmonton, here comes Jason Kenney.
And he has wooing on his mind.
Not with chocolates and flowers but with rhetoric and a bouquet of promises.
The political courtship began in earnest Sunday night when the leader of the United Conservative Party held a rally at Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the party’s founding.
For 40 minutes Kenney delivered a partisan and pugnacious speech promising to scrap the provincial carbon tax, “sh
