Signing Evan Bouchard was a matter of course for Edmonton Oilers. Big question is, will he make the team?
It was a matter of time before Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of first-round draft pick Evan Bouchard to a standard three-year entry level contract, and that happened today. No word on the full details as usual, but it is safe to assume he will have signed for the ELC maximum salary of $925,000, with potential bonuses apt to be in the $700 – 800 K range, based on contracts signed by the last three #10 overall draft picks, Mikko Rantanen (2015), Tyson Jost (2016) and Owen Tippett (201 -

With fewer donations in the summer months, the fundraiser comes at a crucial time for the food bank as i -

An Edmonton Remand Centre correctional officer will lose one year’s salary and his termination was upheld by a judge who overturned an earlier decision by an arbitrator.

Tuesday letters: Turn Terwillegar Drive into an expressway
Anyone who has driven on Terwillegar Drive lately knows that this road is in desperate need of upgrades. The street is decades behind the times in terms of infrastructure. From south Edmonton, it can take up to an hour to reach the downtown core in stop-and-start traffic.
The road needs to become an expressway to reduce congestion and commute times.
The City of Edmonton is currently working on its annual budget and upgrades along Terwillegar Drive are being discussed. However, with no federal fu -
Opinion: Drought putting Edmonton's trees at risk unless watering improved
We should all be worried about Edmonton’s trees. A large urban tree is worth thousands of dollars, based upon the city’s valuation. Trees add enormously to the quality of life in our city. Over the last decades, there has been a gradual decline in the vigour and health of the average tree in Edmonton. Today most city trees have thin canopies and many have a large number of dead branches. Many trees are in a severely weakened state and are on the edge of death.
There are several speci -
Editorial: City must ensure equal access to seniors housing project
The slow process of dealing with Edmonton’s surplus school sites has taken another step forward on a proposal to build seniors housing on land in Ogilvie Ridge.
Two years ago, city council approved guidelines for developing various types of housing on 17 pieces of land that was set aside for construction of schools and now isn’t needed.
Residents in many communities across Edmonton with these sites complained that not enough attention was being paid to their perspective on how the pr -

Graham Thomson: Are the UCP's internal scuffles a sign of scandal or success?
Pop quiz!
The recent internal troubles at the United Conservative Party are proof that:
a) the party is attracting unethical, extreme and power-hungry people who do not reflect the values of most Albertans;
or
b) the party has a vigorous vetting process that is working well to screen out people who do not reflect the values of most Albertans.
The correct answer is, of course, in the eye of the beholder.
For critics of the UCP (hello NDP), the past week has revealed a troubling peek behind the cu -
Live-painting of giant mural summons steady crowds in Old Strathcona
Like roots from a tree, an energized and curious atmosphere has been growing at the base of an iconic new mural in Old Strathcona being painted by Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel and his team.
The colourful six-storey mural of a giant humanoid dog, two cats and three trees started Saturday and is due to be finished Tuesday — a staggering pace for public art.

Mountain pine beetle takes over Jasper National Park forests
The iconic pine trees blanketing Jasper National Park may never be the same as a mountain pine beetle epidemic has infected nearly half of the park’s pine forest.
The area affected in the 11,000-square-kilometre park is approximately doubling each year, said Dave Argument, resource conservation manager with Jasper National Park, in a Monday interview. Sections of the forest have turned bright red as larvae feed on phloem in the tree trunks and kill them.
About 93,000 hectares of the park&r -
