  • Police to attend Edmonton Pride Festival out of uniform

    For the first time in Edmonton, the RCMP and Edmonton Police Service (EPS) won’t be in uniform when they participate in the annual Edmonton Pride Festival.
    The move announced Monday is significant because some marginalized members of the LGBTQ community have had negative interactions with police in the past, Edmonton Pride Festival Society board member Clayton Hitchcock said.

    A dog has been killed by a black bear in Jasper National Park after jumping out of a car window.
    “With heavy hearts, Parks Canada can confirm that a dog did not survive an encounter with a bear Wednesday evening after escaping from a car which had pulled over on the side of the road to view the bear,” park staff posted on Facebook.

  • Northern Alberta homes evacuated after truck spills hydrochloric acid

    A northern Alberta highway was closed Monday after a truck carrying acid crashed and forced the evacuation of several homes.
    A tractor trailer went off Highway 831 three kilometres south of Boyle, according to an RCMP news release.
    The truck was carrying a load of hydrochloric acid which spilled, making that section of the highway impassible. 
    Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. The driver of the truck was not injured.

  • Edmonton police search for escaped convicted killer

    Police are searching for a woman serving a life sentence for murder who walked away Saturday from a downtown Edmonton facility.
    Staff at Buffalo Sage Wellness House reported that Kecia Spade left the property at about 10:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Correctional Service of Canada.
    Spade, 26, is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder.
    Inmates must be found to be a low escape risk before being sent to the 12-bed minimum-security wellness house and to pose a low risk

  • First-degree murder charge laid in death near Alberta-Saskatchewan border

    A man has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of a woman in an eastern Alberta community.
    Elk Point RCMP were called to Fishing Lake Metis Settlement at about noon on Saturday, according to a news release.
    When officers arrived at the scene, a woman was already dead.
    Marc Jess, 27, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court in St. Paul on May 31.
